It is a bit of a hike from the station, but it was worth it, especially as it is a really old pub (though the ceilings are low, so watch out if you are tall like me). Yeah, this pub is very British, and pretty awesome, but I came here because of the name (and there is a story behind it as well).

The pub itself is a very nice dark woody old style looking pub with quite a low roof (I has to duck slightly). They serve a handful of good Cornish ales and have a few tables outside, where you take in the sun weather permitting. The do food but I had already eaten. In short, this was the kind of pub I was hoping to find in Cornwall.

As such, I really had trouble finding gastropub style places with a decent menu. We stumbled on this one after being turned away from Butcher's Bistro for our lack of reservation. Despite being decorated like a contemporary old folks home (it had a sort of corporate-comfortable feel, it was seriously odd), it offered the closest thing to a modern gastro pub and even has an amazing view of the sea. Incredibly, at 8pm on a Saturday night, we waltzed in and grabbed a table with a killer view, found local pints on the list and award-winning fish and chips on the menu. Score. Service was super friendly and food was great. Did I mention the view?! We watched the beautiful sunset from the floor to ceiling windows and made an agreement that next time we'd have the foresight to bring along a deck of cards to entertain us for an afternoon of pint swilling.

We ordered at the bar and waited nearly an hour for the food (they warned us of this, but I was still confused as there weren't many people there). The food could have made up for it, but it didn't. My vegetarian dish automatically came with a terrible iceberg salad that I could only make myself eat about two bites of, and the small goat cheese pastry was really boring (even though I adore goat cheese). I was still hungry after that so I ordered their Easter special ice cream dessert. The only pleasant thing about the whole meal was the cute little chick that came on top of the ice cream. I adore ice cream, but it was really mediocre and came with no toppings except canned whipped cream... just plain chocolate ice cream, whipped cream, and a wafer. Not what I expected from a special Easter "sundae"! Oy. This was by far our least favourite meal in Cornwall.

The layout of the pub clearly indicates an emphasis on food rather than booze, but upon my visit I found the menu rather disappointingly small and conventional. Because of the location and atmosphere it is busy with families and groups of (mostly) younger people. The "restaurant pitch" is further reinforced by the generous layout of the bars for drinks and food. The range of ales is, again, dominated by St. Austell Brewery, and they're kept nice and fresh. But the highlight of The Fort Inn is its spacious outside seating to the back, from which you get a splendid view of Towan Beach (and the Great Western Beach in the background). Unfortunately the furnishings could be more comfortable - it is a strain to sit at those big, raw tables the way they're constructed - you simply cannot stretch out your legs. I've seen these kinds of benches at other pubs, too - maybe it's their way of telling you not to linger. Atmosphere is friendly, clean, "open".

Everyone at the table got a different type, so I was able to sample a lot. We arrived right as they opened. It was packed right from the start, so make reservations. Our server appeared to be run off her feet because we rarely saw her. She wrote on the check "service fee is not included." I've never seen that in England before. I am not sure if they were expecting a tip because we're American or what.

There is often pipe music or something similar playing quietly in the background, which is also nice for setting the mood. The food is served on wooden plates and bowls, and no cutlery is given unless your meal type requires it or you actually request it. The waitresses are dressed as serving wenches and you wash your hands between courses using little wooden bowls of water with a piece of lemon floating in them! The signature dish is called chicken in the rough, which is half a chicken cooked in a special oven with gorgeous crispy skin. It is served with chips although you can pick salad or half and half if you want as well. There is a great choice on the menu of starters, mains and desserts and the food is lovely. Although this is 30 mins or so drive from us my dad still prefers to go there than any of the closer ones!
