I cant believe that I am actually writing a review for Ground Round. The last time that I was in one, Yelp didn't exist. So, when a good friend called and told me that there was a new one that opened in Shrewsbury, it was off to the races. I had to experience this. Service: We got seated nearly instantaneously when we got in the door and the place was already quite busy by the time that we got there. My friend got a salad of some sort with a sandwich and I got one of their signature burgers. The waitress appeared in a timely fashion, took the orders, had drinks on the table in no time, and was very attentive to any and all needs. Ambiance: It was on a Saturday during sports season, so there was a lot of noise and chaos going on, but that is always how I remembered the Ground Round. It is NOT a restaurant that you are going to read a good book in. The fact that this restaurant also had high cathedral ceilings which increased the acoustics, made it a little more unbearable for people who like quieter spots. But to me and my friend, it was not a dealbreaker. Food: After all, what were we doing there for anyways, but the food? It was very good. She enjoyed her dish, and my burger was actually one of those "skyscraper" burgers that are impossible to grip with two hands or get into your mouth for a bite. After dining at the Ground Round again, I am moderately confident that I could take a bite out of the Prudential Center if the need arose. Don't get me wrong, the burger was tasty, juicy, and done to perfection, but it was yuuuuge. Overall, if I could give the Ground Round a 1/2 a star I would make my rating of them a 4 and a 1/2 stars venue. First timer visit to Ground Round in Shrewsbury. I got to say it didn't live up to my expectations. It was a recent Thursday evening; I walked in at 8pm and immediately had a bad feeling. First, the place was DEAD, aside from several patrons in the bar area; about the same in the dining room. I noticed the lighting was off, way off; it's like the kind hazy fluorescent lighting that gives you a migraine. Second, the music playing was barely audible; I would expect to hear really good nostalgic music from the 70s & 80s (you know what would make this place fun??? A JUKEBOX!!!). I ordered the Ground Rounder and was disappointed; I don't like cheese and it came with cheese; I wish the server asked if I wanted cheese; I know, I know, the description on the menu says it comes with cheese; my bad BUT I don't like cheese on my burger. I wish it came on a sesame bun or bulky roll; the pretzel roll just sucks IMHO. Also, please remember the old time Ground Rounder came with Steak Fries back in the day; today, this one comes with grease-sticks -- stubby reconstituted dehydrated potatoes formed to resemble French fries which wick the grease from the Fryolator, UGH! For the burger, I prefer lettuce, tomato and onion over cheese and bacon any day of the week. The service was good, which is the only reason I gave my review 2 stars. Overall, a disappointment, but with some tweaks it might have a chance. As is, it's not going to be around very long. Went here for dinner with my BF since we saw they serve movie theater popcorn as your free snack! Food: I ordered the fish and chips and bang bang cauliflower, my bf ordered the classic burger (not pictured). The fish and chips were amazing! The tartar sauce was definitely homemade the fries have a nice crunch to them. The fish was fresh and was HUGE, I definitely took this home and it was still good as leftovers. The bang bang cauliflower was really well done, freshness of the lettuce/green onions was great and the cauliflower was not mushy. My bf enjoyed his burger but his favorite was the fries. Service: our waitress was great as well, she was attentive and always on it with refills. She was also very patient when we couldn't decide what to order! Ambiance: on the inside it's like walking into a log cabin, it's very clean and tall ceilings with the wooden theme inside. The booths are also huge if that's something you're looking for. Overall experience was a 4.7/5, the pricing was good, food was good, and great service. I will definitely come back to try some other dishes! read more

I came for the nostalgia but I'll be going back for the food which was excellent. It was so much fun stepping back in time to a Ground Round complete with branded food and drink menus, floor mats and other signage. The first thing that hits you when you enter is the smell of the fresh popcorn. The food appears to be scratch recreations of the original menu with some new additions. Food quality was top notch - way better than anything at the original Ground Rounds I ate at decades ago. I would rate it much more in line with comfort food served at a nice local pub rather than at an Applebee's or similar chain. But it purposely has a chain feel and casualness to it to invoke the memories of the original. Patty Melt burger was spectacular. Steak was tender and served with buttered broccoli and baked potato. Chili was fresh made in a crock with melted cheese. Service was top notch as well. Drinks were refilled without asking. Definitely worth the hour drive. Such a nostalgic feeling when visiting the newly opened The Ground Round in Shrewsbury. We started with some popcorn and pretzels with beer cheese, along the blueberry bella & nostalgia 9 adult beverages. My friend had the broccoli cheddar soup, and it could have been a little thicker. For entrees, my guy and friend had the burgers with fries or sweet potato fries, I enjoyed the sweet potato fries and wish we got some onion rings. I had the 4 cheese mac & cheese with crispy buffalo, which was absolutely delicious. Want to give a huge shout out to our waitress Lisa. I grew up going to Ground Round's and that nostalgia and emotional connection drove me to want to rekindle a little something from my childhood. I recalled burgers with a particular "char" and popcorn and the crunch of peanut shells underfoot (I didn't really miss the peanut shells). This was a night out with family and when going out to eat was a true treat after being packed into the Buick. But, I digress. What I have discovered is everything has a time and place and nostalgia only goes so far because ultimately you can't go back and what is created is just not what you remember. The restaurant was incredibly packed and loud when I arrived. The service was chaotic and inconsistent and the servers were just trying to stay afloat it seemed. I had to ask for a drink and felt like I had to flag down the server all night. We ordered some appetizers and the calamari was oily with a wet coating of greasy breading. The nachos were presented on a bed of lettuce with layers of velveeta or similar cheese and then mozzarella (again just greasy and oily). The cheeseburger had a terribly off putting taste that was unpleasant (medium well became just hockey puck). Overall, the food was just terrible. The service was chaotic and the nostalgia doesn't replace good food or service. "I wanna go back and do it all over again. But I can't go back I know. Newly opened in Shrewsbury, The Ground Round has opened up on Grafton St at Route 9 Westbound. This classic restaurant & bar has a rustic modern lodge atmosphere with a high pitched wood ceiling with wood beams with the full service bar area to the left and main dining room and quieter dining room to the right. In the bar area, there is seating at the full service bar, flatscreen TVs, TouchTunes digital jukebox, and historic framed Ground Round prints & menus on the walls and in the area outide the restrooms. The opening of The Ground Round in the area has been highly anticipated by many, who have fond memories of dining at The Ground Round as a kid and young adult when there were plenty of locations open. I enjoyed countless meals and kids meals at my former local Ground Rounds in NY including in Albany, Colonie, Latham, Schenectady, and East Greenbush. I miss their Kids Pay What They Weigh (penny a pound) promotion, scale at the hostess stand for kid weigh in, lol. Also, the best part of my meal was getting their Slider Sundae for dessert served in a plastic mini baseball cap, which I still have a collection of different major league teams like the Red Sox, Yankees, Pirates, Phillies, A's, Royals, Twins, Dodgers, Expos, and Brewers. My most recent Ground Round dining experiences close to 20 years ago were several miles up the road at the former Tin Alley Grill in Framingham (Ground Round restaurant) where their fajitas were excellent and they had great happy hour specials. Fast forward to 2025, I decided to stop in at The Ground Round in Shrewsbury, which had their soft opening over the weekend. Open for dinner only during the soft opening phase. The dining room was booked solid and the bar was very busy. At the time of this posting, they were offering a very limited soft opening food menu including select appetizers, salads, pasta, burgers, sandwiches, fish & chips, steak tips, kids menu and desserts. The pricing is moderate high. The bar is fully stocked offering 10 draft beers, bottle/can beers, wine list, cocktails and mocktails. I took a seat up at the bar. I was given a soft opening food menu which I already read on social media. For dinner, I ordered the Ground Round Chicken Florentine ($24 plus tax), which had soft cooked campanelle pasta tossed tossed in a creamy cajun sauce with spinach, sliced blackened grilled chicken & arugula, served with buttered garlic toast. This pasta dish was very good and I requested a container for half of this dish, so I could order dessert.. For a dessert, the Baseball Cap Sundae ($7 plus tax) had a scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate sauce, whipped cream, rainbow sprinkles, & cherry on top in a plastic mini baseball cap. However, the black mini cap had no team logo and I did ask about it. The bartender said the caps are supposed to have Red Sox or Woo Sox and the logo must have washed off. What a disappointment..... I requested the check when I was done, which was $33.17 with tax and before tip. Another bartender cashed me out. Overall, the food here tasted just fine and if I do come back to a Ground Round (MA, OH, ND, ID), I would get the fish & chips which looked like a good sized portion. The music was too loud in the bar area and could hardly hear. However, the service here needs improvement. I am cognizant that they are trying to work things out before they go full steam ahead. The bartender had a chippy attitude, did not offer me popcorn and basically told me "I don't know what to say" and walked away after I asked about the blank baseball cap, no resolution. Most bartenders would ask my name to put on the tab/check, but the name on my check was Back Row Hat (probably easier for food runners to identify or maybe they could use seat numbers). Also, no manager or owner introduced themselves to me, so I will not likely return to this location for a while. Unfortunately the service here was very similar to the former Tin Alley Grill in Framingham, which I gave the same rating, good food, spotty service. I will note, I've had both good food and stellar friendly service at the former Ground Round locations in Upstate NY, back when people actually cared. read more

I never thought I would see this place again once most of their restaurants were shut down across the country (2004). Only one opened up again last year in MA. It brought back memories going there as a child with my family. Hubby has never been to one when he was young so I decided to try it out and see if it still gave me good vibe feelings and good memories. It was well spaced out between booths and tables. Bathrooms were clean and spacious. The service staff was friendly. Hubby got the chicken wrap with his all time favorite FRENCH FRIES! I ordered a Cobb Salad. It wasn't that busy when we had arrived. Waitress took our order. For some reason it did start getting a little crowded. Only drawback hubby and I both had was that we received our plates 45 min later. It wasn't that busy I thought. Other tables that came after we arrived and were seated got their food before we did. When our food did arrive to our table, it was good. Huge plate of mine and hubby really liked his French Fries. He did tell me that the chicken piece was semi small. It wasn't bad though he tells me. For coming to eat on a Tuesday night it should not have been that busy I would think. I recently came back here with my family for Mother's Day. I was very pleased that they were able to take a reservation for us. They were very friendly and accommodating the entire visit. It was very loud, but that's to be expected on a crazy day like Mother's Day. I tried the barbecue burger for the very first time and other than it being a little overcharged at the bun being over toasted it was actually pretty good. French fries were nice and crispy and their coleslaw is probably the best coleslaw I've ever had! We all shared some potato skins, which were very tasty as well. My parents got a French dip sandwich and they absolutely loved it. That was what I had the very first time I came back here and I'm glad to see that it's still holding up. It's great reputation! At the end of the meal, we all split the Matilda chocolate cake, which was unbelievable! If I could leave 10 stars for that cake I would! It is a huge delicious chocolatey fudgy cake slice that definitely holds the name! If you do get this, I think it's perfect for four people or three people to split. Don't get it by yourself unless you're really a chocoholic and hungry! My one and only pet peeve with this wonderful place are the hours. They open early on the weekends but only are open from 4 PM from Tuesday to Friday. Can we please be open for lunch every day? I personally do not mind eating at 4 o'clock, but there are members of my family that don't like to come out that late in the afternoon to grab a good meal. I've been three times and have to say that this is more than just a nostalgic walk down memory lane for those of us who knew the old Shrewsbury Ground Round. Here's the thing, the food is really good and the atmosphere is lively and fun. During our last visit my fiancé had the lobster roll, her son had steak tips and I had grilled chicken roll up. We arrived shortly after 4:00 PM when the restaurant opened and the place was already filling up with early bird diners. I thought there might be a special menu/dinner option because of the crowd, but there were no specials. We originally planned to have a late lunch, but GR isn't open for lunch yet. The interior has a lot of exposed beams and two tvs tuned to the Cartoon Network. We were seated and within a minute had some fresh popcorn on our table. We looked at the two-sided menu and opted for the steak tips and the signature burger. There were a lot of options that are being served in most restaurants today. Both meals were large enough that we both needed to bring the leftovers home. That didn't stop us from ordering the fried dough triangles. They were tough and hollow. The accompanying dipping sauces were skimpy and the triangles were too big to fit into the small plastic cups. Other than this dessert, the food was very good but not great. I think the prices were higher than expected, given the GR"s reputation for good food at family friendly prices. The service was adequate, but the people who were seated within minutes of us still hadn't received their main meals before we finished eating our dessert. I think it's a good restaurant but if you're looking for a trip down memory lane, Ground Round misses the mark. read more

I had such a great experience at the Ground Round in Shrewsbury. The atmosphere has a very nostalgic feel, and the décor really adds to the charm of the place. It's family friendly with an upbeat vibe, and you can tell people genuinely enjoy being there. There are enough tables and staff that we did not have to wait. The food was fantastic, many drink options -- I had the French Dip sandwich from the special's menu, and it was honestly one of the best I've ever had. My partner and I had an ehh experience. The waiter was great. I ordered a steak medium rare and it was rare but not really seasoned either. The waitress even said "that looks more rare than medium rare" as I asked for it to be sent back. The sides were good as well as the appetizers. My partner got a "spicy" burger but the seasoning was all in the center. The blueberry cobber spirit free was a good drink. Dessert was on the house but I think the appetizers should of been too. Who doesn't remember heading to The Ground Round as a kid? The chicken basket and fries, the ice cream served in tiny baseball helmets, the cinnamon dippers , all while your parents tried to drink away their stress and shove free popcorn into your face just long enough to enjoy a quiet meal. Simpler times. So imagine my excitement walking into the "new" Ground Round in Westborough/Southborough, hoping for a bite of nostalgia. Unfortunately, the first sign that things weren't going to go well was... the door handle , half hanging off like it, too, had given up hope. Inside, it looked like someone had gone on a cross-country scavenger hunt for any random piece of old Ground Round memorabilia they could find, then tossed it all into what appears to be a converted something , I'm still not sure what it used to be. The service? Exactly what you'd expect , polite but unremarkable. The food? Also exactly what you'd expect , edible but forgettable. There was nothing wrong with it, but nothing worth talking about either. It was a one-time visit for the "Hey, we went!" moment, followed by a quick "Yeah, we've been... not sure you'd like it though" kind of recommendation. In short, it's not bad , it's just painfully average. The kind of meal that makes you realize you could've made the same thing (and probably better) at home, without the broken door handle or misplaced nostalgia. read more

They are still in the soft opening stage, to iron out the kinks before they fully open. With that said, cut them a little slack! They are def trying their best to please everyone. We went on a Monday , it was busy and the bar was full, we got our drinks right away, we were offered popcorn while we waited for our food, and the food was amazing! My bf said it was the best steak tips he has in a long time and my fish and chips were perfect! Can't wait for the full menu to try some more items ! The staff is super friendly, and attentive! My wife and I finally went to The Ground Round this past Friday night. We love that the Ground Round has returned to Shrewsbury; having taken our kids when they were young to the one near Spag's so many years ago. Our server (Susan) didn't rush us, provided good recommendations, and made us feel welcomed. The atmosphere is so friendly; even other servers walk by saying hi to everyone. The calamari appetizer was nice and light (not oil soaked like so many other establishments). I had the special, Salmon Oscar (best tasting salmon I've ever had at a restaurant). I'll order it any time I see it on their menu (hopefully, it's a frequent special). My wife really liked the baked Haddock and found it good tasting, flaky and moist. Needless to say, The Ground didn't disappoint. We will return soon! You will not be disappointed if you go there. read more

Ok so the poor service was really surprising our waitress Jane was fitting as she was Jane Doe nowhere to be found we had to ask for silverware and napkins as we never were given any and she had the personality of a porcupine. I'm aware they're in a soft opening so I will be going back at some point to try other things on the menu but here's my initial thoughts: I had a reservation at 6:00 pm on a Saturday and it was busy, probably took about 25-ish minutes to be sat, really not bad. Our waitress was lovely and very attentive, she did let us know that a couple of the chefs had called out as a heads up, no big deal. She came over quickly with our drinks, was great about refills and we got a yummy bowl of popcorn too. My husband and I ordered the mozzarella moons and the pretzel sticks to share. The mozz moons are a pretty good size but only come with 3, I kind of feel it should be at least 4 for maybe a larger party; they're tasty though and the sauce they come served over was good too, also has some pesto mixed in which hubby loved. The pretzel sticks were hot, maybe felt a bit overdone on the outside but were fluffy on the inside; my issue is the menu says it's served with either beer cheese or honey mustard, we weren't asked which we'd like so they got sent out with both, but on the bill at the end I noticed I was charged a $1.50 for both dips. I didn't bring it up with the server because, really, I'm not pressed about $1.50, it's just something to note for the future. Both apps took a bit to come out but our waitress kept letting us know that she had checked on them and they'd be coming soon, and for the trouble offered us the cheesecake dessert, which I'm not sure if it's supposed to, but came with two slices, one for me and hubby, it was very tasty. Hubby and I's main entree was the fish n' chips. He loved it, I didn't. The fish to me felt tough and not flaky, the batter wasn't super crispy either. I've read multiple reviews on both sides of the spectrum for this meal so I'm wondering if they're really just working out the kinks here. I'd be willing to give it another shot in the future. This building is in the old Benihana which I've never been inside so I'm not sure how much decoration/structure was left over, and I'm sure they're still working on it, but it needs more. Please bring back a carousel horse, that's what I vividly remember from the old place. Overall, for a soft opening, it wasn't bad. I've seen some folks write them off already and I don't think that's fair, give them a chance to get the kinks worked out and I think this place will be a gem. I'll be back for sure! read more

Got there at about 4:30 (they open at 4pm this particular day) and it was already busy. Sat at the bar, waited for my husband. Upon his arrival, we shared nachos with buffalo chicken. Now let me say... the portion is HUGE. And the nachos and toppings are absolutely delicious. We added buffalo chicken and that, however, was very scarce. Very. Not much to be found. But the nachos were on point. Fresh lettuce and generous veggie toppings. Delicious. Served hot with great cheese distribution throughout (oddly, that's a common problem with Nachos... cheese distribution). Service at the bar was EXCELLENT. Super friendly, extremely attentive, very nice. Just the kind of visit I needed after a bit of a stressful day. We look forward to coming back, but you really have to visit at the right time and, judging by our past attempt at visiting with our kids w/us and also the drives past this place on numerous occasions, I'm not sure there is a "right" time.
