I wanted to go somewhere nice for my girlfriend and my anniversary. I wanted fine-ish dining, and somewhere with a nice outdoor patio since I knew the weather would be nice. The Gruene Door did not disappoint! The drinks, appetizers, salad and main courses were all phenomenal with no exceptions. As someone with decades of food service experience, it's rare that I don't have something that I would change. But the service and food were both fantastic. The music was lively but not overbearing and the patio was calm. Our waiter was attentive, but not overly so; so we felt our needs were met without being hovered over. If I were to suggest anything, it might be nice to have candles on the tables, and maybe even a fire in the outdoor fireplace even though it wouldn't have needed for heat; just ambiance. Also the windows are tinted so darkly that initially I was afraid the restaurant was closed, so maybe consider an illuminated open sign facing the main road. But this place was great! Dish. That one wasn't too salty and had a nice flavor. I never was a tenderloin/filet mignon type person. Yeah, it's tender, but lacks the nice beefy flavor, so that might be one of the dishes they could add more salt to or have a strong sauce to go with it. I had wanted to try this restaurant ever since my family and I went for cocktails at the neighboring business, Gruene's Last Call. I was a little nervous about making it a luncheon location for my fellow retirees, but one of our group members lives in New Braunfels and said it was a nice place for lunch. She also said it wasn't all that expensive, which had been my main concern since the online menu doesn't list any prices. Anyway, I made a reservation for 12 of us for the last Tuesday in April. Just a few days before, they called to cancel my reservation because they were painting the restaurant. I scrambled and located a new venue for that luncheon, but told my people we would still be going to The Gruene Door, only now it would be for our May luncheon. The restaurant is very nice. The entire place is painted in rich colors. We were at a large table in the middle of a room that had wonderful windows on three sides. The other tables were empty, so it was practically private dining. There were a lot of menu items sampled between our group members. I uncharacteristically took a chance on the meatloaf. Y'all know that I think my wife's is the absolute best version of my meatloaf- my favorite food. Most restaurants disappoint me, even when the meatloaf is pretty good. I will say that the meatloaf served here was very good. I liked the sweet and tangy tomato topping. But, it was nowhere near as good as my wife's. I also must have misread the menu because I was expecting mashed potatoes. The fingerling potatoes were a definite disappointment. There was nothing wrong with them. I just prefer mashed potatoes with meatloaf. The item that stole the show for me was the delicious cheese soup made with boch beer. It was so flavorful and creamy. It didn't have that floury consistency so many cheese soups get. To top it off, our server brought us a plate of complementary focaccia bread that was to die for. I dipped it into my soup like a peasant. It was one of the best textural and flavorful pairings I have ever enjoyed. The deserts all sounded delicious. I was really tempted by the creme brule. But, since I only late half of my lunch thanks to my $#@%&*@ diabetic meds, I didn't let myself order it. It isn't something I am supposed to eat, anyway. We went to Gruene Door on 17 June 2026 for dinner and our server was amazing! However, I ordered a steak medium which is pink throughout. When I got my steak it was prepared medium well at best! The server came to the table and agreed it was not cooked as requested and stated it would be corrected. Approximately 3 min later, the manager approached and inquired about the steak being well done and then asked me how i defined medium and i stated pink throughout. She then left the table. About 5 min later my steak was returned by the server and he stated he wanted me to cut into it because he thought it wasnt cooked enough. I did and sure enough it was now medium rare. At this point, i simply ate what i could and left. I felt that any more questions would be viewed as me trying to be "that customer" so we simply paid and left. Additionally, i had to remind the server he had taken our bruscetta and bread to be boxed up but did not bring it back to the table. Getting a last minute lunch reservation here wasn't a big issue on a Saturday. Our server was prompt and helpful and helped to enhance the dining experience. I had the petit grilled salmon with polenta and flash fried spinach. I didn't love the spinach. My father in law had the chicken piccata and said the sauce wasn't very lemony. My mother in law had the Mediterranean chicken and wished there had been a sauce. My fiancé had the braised short rib and absolutely loved it. It took me a while to write this review because I have mixed feelings about my visit. The restaurant is ambiance is nice, upscale but cozy. The service was very good and attentive so no complaints there. However, the food left a bit to be desired. We were here for a birthday celebration which included six people. We ordered our drinks and took some time to view the menu. This place was highly anticipated so we were excited. Let me preface my food review with this note. We are foodies and like flavorful things. We also all know how to cook. For appetizers we had the risotto, the crab cakes, and lobster ravioli. The risotto was good, seasoned well. The lobster ravioli sauce was delicious but the pasta was a little gummy like it had been sitting awhile. Next we had two chicken picattas, one steak with fries, once spiced duck with Thai curry, one trout, and one stuffed pepper. Everything was just okay. Nothing gave the wow factor. I ordered a spinach salad and the spinach artichoke dip. The salad included, strawberries, almonds and Parmesan cheese. The salad MIGHT have had 3-4 strawberries sliced, maybe a couple tablespoons of almond slivers and POWDERED Parmesan!!! WAY too much spinach for the small amount of toppings. The dip, was put in a foil wrap vs. a small container. The wrap was placed inside a styrofoam container with some pita chips that were somewhat stale. Not at all the quantity when dining in. Day tripping from San Antonio, Marjan and I joined another couple from Fort Worth for dinner at the Gruene Door on this past Saturday night. We were unaware of this restaurant, but our experience was notable. The Gruene Door is found within the Gruene Lake Village, a retail center just east of the very popular Guadalupe River area. The Village offers retails, coffee shops, martini bars, wellness centers, gourmet popcorn shop and a cigar shop. The shops are independently owned, offering diversion for the visitors. One could easily pass pleasing time ambling down the two block commerce, munching popcorn, window shopping...and well...shopping! The area has a feel of "newness", of "brand spanking newness" about it. Definitely recommend! But now for the Gruene Door. Parking is facile, with a generous lot adjacent to the eatery: we found no difficulty with parking on this Saturday night...and it was Prom Saturday night in Gruene. We had reserved a table, and we were immediately greeted and taken to table at the appointed time. The decor is contemporary, with seating for perhaps thirty tables or so. And while the restaurant is a bit more upscale, the feel was casual: I noticed not a gentleman in coat and tie, nor a belle in long dress. This is a lively restaurant, and the sound level did make quiet conversation somewhat strained given the revelry of the guests. Collin served as our waiter, a young man of friendly demeanor, directly taking our orders for aperitifs: three martinis and a cosmo. As our readers understand, we are definitely fans of the vodka martini, and this offering did not disappoint. Kudos to the mixologist for his skill and for his very prompt delivery of our libations! We began our dining experience with appetizer of crab cake, and per Collin's recommendation, shrimp gratin. The cakes were served sided with air fried spinach, and while the cakes were tasty, the light flaky spinach upstaged the appetizer. Think the lightness of baked kale. Just an excellent appetizer. The gratin was hearty, with shrimp nestled within rich, creamy sauce. (Collin definitely knows his appetizers!!) Delicious times two! Our table enjoyed chicken piccata, tenderloin, short ribs and seared ahi tuna. These entrees were sided variously with risoto, mashers, spaghetti and asparagus. The tenderloin was prepared as ordered: rare, but somewhat deficient in the very desirable sear that gives texture to the dish. Aside from that, we considered the entree a winner. The piccata? Sufficiently tender allowing cut with just a fork, and the sauce giving additional elevation to the entree. Short ribs were remarkably tender, rich and flavorful. Short ribs can be heavy on fat, but this offering was of no such character: we definitely recommend. But friends, the gold star winner of the evening was the ahi tuna. This entree demands quality seasoning, perfect sear and rare protein within. In truth, this was perhaps among the best ahi we have enjoyed anywhere. Definitely...DEFINITELY recommend for fans of the finned creature. We finished our evening with their vanilla bean brulee and their bread pudding. Let me put it this way: forget about the caloric damage, and just go for it. Delicious dessert! Throughout the evening, our waiter Collin was appropriately attentive, definitely not intrusive, his professionalism adding another layer of enjoyment to our evening. Would we recommend the Gruene Door? Without a doubt! So Yelpers, should you be in want of pleasing environs, commendable service and exceptional menu, give this eatery a visit. We really wanted to love this place. I ordered the steak frites. Fries were double fried and really good. The hangar steak was on par for hangar steak...nothing great or bad about it. However, the chimichurri was god awful. It looked to either be store bought or poorly made and it was served already poured over the steak, which took away from the steak flavor. It was grainy as though it was pureed instead of finely chopped and had a dull green color to it. It tasted mostly of lemon and parsley. The table shared a lobster ravioli starter and the noodle was either undercooked or parboiled and reheated before serving...the texture of the ravioli noodle was meh. We also shared a risotto starter and the table enjoyed it. Lastly, the advertised gelato was not gelato, it was ice cream. To boot, two people at the table swore that it was HEB brand ice cream. My birthday travel plans fell through so I stayed local and reserved a 1:00 table online, craving the salmon/polenta/spinach plate. The food was on point, as expected, BUT: The service from waitress LB went from dismal to downright baddd, from start to finish. It took her several minutes to approach my table. Her appearance matched her skills. Like she had just got out of bed, a real mess. She had poor communication skills, very loud, rushed, abrupt. Not a shred of finesse, which does not match the vibe of this nice restaurant. The lunch crowd was gone, there were 1, 2, then 3 tables filled in a large room that had ~10+ empty tables. But this poor thing ran frantically around and from room to room like it was a packed Saturday night. And there was a second waiter also assigned to our room. As I waited patiently for my lunch plate, she never once checked in. I wondered if they served bread, crackers, anything. I finally asked another waiter who said he'd tell her to get me their homemade bread. Waited some more, never spoke with her as she zipped by my table doing I have no idea what. She finally brought my lunch plate and still no bread arrived. Well into my entree, she arrived with one small square of delicious bread and butter explaining she had to toast it. Never saw her again throughout my meal. Finished, waited ~10 minutes, and she finally brought the check. Asked me if I wanted to see the dessert menu. I said no thanks. Is it ME? Or when a restaurant KNOWS it's a birthday, don't they at least offer a comped dessert?? Even Dairy Queen offers a small free treat. I worked at DQ in high school, and can confirm that LB wouldn't cut it there. I gave her a gift card and she disappeared for a long while. Returned with my card balance, then loudly asked if I wanted to pay her tip off the gift card. I said yes. LB: "How much?" (Loud) Me: "20%". (I gritted my teeth when I said that because had we not been announcing all this I would have left her maybe $5. She looked at my ticket and loudly said, "I guess that is about $11.63. Is that okay?" I quietly replied okay. She grabbed my card again then had to go get a manager to help her figure out how to charge the card for only tip. Meanwhile, the couple at the table heard everything and when she left the room they gave me a look of empathy and we all shook our heads. LB FINALLY returned and wished me a happy birthday. Where to begin. My daughter-in-law made reservations for all of the adults in our immediate family while we had some out-of-town family in town. At the last minute, we needed to add 3 folks to the reservation. When she called, they apologized, but said they were booked and couldn't accommodate the additions to our group. We totally understood. About 10 minutes later, they actually called and let us know that another large group had to cancel and that they would be able to add the 3 seats. That spoke volumes. When we arrived, our table was ready. Our server (Maddie) immediately came and took our beverage orders. Throughout the evening (we end up being there for almost 3 hours) she was super attentive, but not in a bothersome way - we were very impressed! We started with a number of appetizers. The Shrimp Gratin (shrimp, bacon, tomatoes, jalapenos, pepperoncini, and mixed cheeses, served with toasted bread) was wonderful - very flavorful! The spinach and artichoke dip with tortilla chips was also very good and flavorful - I've had good and bad in restaurants and this was in the top three ever. The meat, cheese and fruit plate was very good, with a mixture of cheeses (one I had never tasted), house made sausage, pesto, fruit, olives, mustard - just a great mixture and great flavors and fresh fruits! The Risotto was phenomenal! It was one of the nightly specials. It had a southwest twist with corn, black beans, bacon, cheese and rice. It was different that I had ever tasted but it was very good. For entrees, we ended up with: Several had the special of the night - a 14 oz ribeye served with grilled gulf shrimp, a wonderful garlic butter sauce, garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus. The ribeye steaks were very flavorful and each was prepared correctly. The butter sauce for the shrimp (and for the steak) had a really good flavor. The asparagus was prepared as it should be -- not under or over done. A really good meal. Several had Chicken Piccata which was sautéed with white wine, caper and lemon butter sauce, served with linguini and green beans. I sampled some of each and I (and those who ordered it) thought is was very good. Several had the beef tenderloin filet with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus. As with the ribeye, the filets were prepared perfectly and had a great flavor. One of the family had the stuffed poblano pepper which was stuffed with roasted corn, squash, onion, black beans, spinach & cheese stuffing on a bed of brown rice with jalapeno cream sauce and chicken. I am not a huge poblano fan, but this looked so good I had to try some - needless to say, I would order it when I come back - it was truly different and more flavorful than any I previously tried. There were honestly at least three other entrees that sounded delicious and I will have to try on future visits (my wife and I and other family that live nearby will definitely be back). The portions were VERY generous and most of our party took some of their dinner home. The desserts sounded great so we had to get several of a few and share them. The bread pudding was extremely tasty with a vanilla and caramel sauce, topped with vanilla ice cream. The flavors were spot on and the bread pudding was perfectly moist. I love good bread pudding but rarely end up with good bread pudding. This was great. The fudgy chocolate brownie with pecans and ice cream was also extremely good. When a few ordered it my thought was "ok, a standard brownie with a few pecans and ice cream - nothing special". I was wrong. It was kind of chewy (in a very good way) and was really great. I was extremely pleased with the entire evening - service, food, atmosphere - all great. Now, understanding that no 'perfect' restaurant exists - the only two slightly 'negative' comments - our meals and desserts came out spaced out by about 7 minutes. Half the meals came out and then there was about a 7-minute lag before the rest of the meals came out. The same happened with the desserts. Certainly not a major issue - something to work on. The brownies were a little light on the ice cream - but, when we asked Maddie for a bit more ice cream for one of the brownies, she quickly brought out a very large cup filled with ice cream! Again - good customer service. So - I highly recommend this place and am very glad that my daughter-in-law decided to make reservations there (she had not eaten there either, so we took a risk that paid off). It was a little loud (wholly aside from our group) so it's probably not the place for a very quiet intimate dinner, but if you're going with good friends or family - not a problem. The attire was relaxed - we didn't see t-shirts or shorts, but definitely casual dress. We used to live right by Gruene but whenever we would drive past, The Gruene Door never looked open. Fast forward nearly 2 years later, we were able to dine in. There was a bridal or baby shower in the back room so the staff was relatively busy but we never had to wait long for drinks or food. - Spinach Artichoke Dip: delicious! Comes out bubbling hot so had to wait a few minutes for it to cool down. There were big chunks of artichoke quarters and spinach pieces. - Blackened Tuna Salad: so yummy! The greens were very crisp and fresh and were all coated nicely in a dressing that was not too overpowering. Many times when you get pre added dressing on a salad, the greens are dripping in dressing or only half of the salad is coated. Not in this case, the dressing was light and really complemented the tuna. The tuna was a bit overcooked for my taste, I prefer a bit more rare tuna but otherwise it was fine. - Sweet Heat Fried Chicken Sandwich: a good sandwich! the chicken was cooked well and soft but very sticky. Also there was a ton of bread (each piece was very fluffy) so we ended up eating only 1 bun. The fries are delicious! After a relaxing and fun afternoon tubing down the Comal River with friends, my wife and I were a bit hungry and were looking for a place for an early dinner. We initially thought about driving to Gruene to try out Adobe Verde...heard from friends they had good food. We turned left on Gruene Road while heading north on Common Street and were pleasantly surprised by the quaint mixed-use Gruene Lake Village. I saw The Gruene Door and when I brought that up as an alternative to our initial plans, my wife readily agreed so we back-tracked and headed for the Gruene Door. When we walked in (it was about 4:30 PM or so) there was nobody to greet us. We thought they may have been closed but saw an occupied table outside. We were later greeted by our server who promptly showed us to our table. The place had a nice and cozy ambience with decor befitting an upscale lodge. We checked out the menu and my wife opted for the Scottish Salmon which came with flash fried spinach and polenta cake. I ordered the Smoked Double-Cut Pork Chops topped with bacon au jus sauce and served with fingerling potatoes and green beans. My wife loved her dish. The salmon was tender, flaky and nice salmon flavor accentuated by the paprika-brown sugar glaze. She also loved the flash fried spinach that just crumbled in her mouth...haven't seen spinach prepared in such an imaginative way. The polenta cake was creamy inside with a crusty exterior. She really liked the combination of flavors. My dish was very good. The green beans (and I am not usually a fan of green beans) were firm and so flavorful...buttery and garlicky. The fingerling potatoes were executed perfectly. My pork chops (I ordered medium well) had a good smoky flavor with a savory bacon au jus...but not the most tender pork chops I've had. It was good but could've been damned good if it was more tender. Service was attentive and our server was very knowledgeable about the menu. However, we didn't know and didn't ask about the specials of the day and she didn't inform us. We only found out when she provided the specials to other diners. All in all, a very good dining experience. It wasn't after we finished our dinner did I recall that it was our 22nd First Date Anniversary! It made for a good date night. My husband and I celebrated our third anniversary here and had a wonderful meal. Our server was attentive from the beginning but not overbearing. We both settled on an old fashioned while we perused the menu. We shared the crab artichoke dip for an appetizer. It came out hot and bubbling and served with tortilla chips. Since it's a heavier and dense dip it seemed like toast points or artisan crackers would have been a better choice than tortilla chips but it was still delicious. For the main course we had the rack of lamb and the 16oz center cut rib eye. The lamb was expertly cooked with a medium rare center and rubbed with a toasted pecan crust. It was served over a peppercorn demi glaze accompanied with roasted garlic mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. It was excellent! My husband said his ribeye was cooked the way he liked it (medium) and he ate every bite without sharing. I think it was a zip sauce they put over the steak. For dessert we split the bread pudding and ice cream. It was good but a little on the dry side. Easily fixed with extra sauce. We left stuffed and happy. The Gruene Door is a perfect date night spot. They also have a lovely outside patio for dining and a bar area with daily happy hour specials. We will be back to try their happy hour and small plates! read more

Everytime we have visited, we have had a great experience. We have celebrated baby shower luncheons, date night and couples date night here. The Gruene Door has been consistent thus far in regard to food quality, service, and overall experience. We enjoy the cozy yet classy ambiance. Some establishments do great with just smaller parties but not larger parties, they are exceptional with both. We highly recommend the caprese salad, the chicken picatta and the 8oz beef tenderloin filet. What a gem this place read more
