My more independent streak want's to give this place less stars, and bang on about how the staff are unfriendly an aloof and this place just doesn't have a feel for the people like Badlands Guitars (which their is some truth in). The big BUT is though, that this place is simply the biggest and most wide ranging guitar shop in Brighton, and stocks the most things. Electrics, Acoustic, Basses, Amps, Keyboards, Stomp boxes, recording equipment, song books etc etc... will be found here. I was half expecting the store employee to eat me alive or stand around me whilst I played one of the guitars and point and laugh, as I had heard some less than good things about this place, but I was pleasantly surprised to be served by a nice, chilled out dude who was helpful and unpushy. I bought a direct jack to USB to record on garage band, though could have stayed for days just looking at the guitars and dreaming. If your wanting to get a starter electric guitar as well as a high end option, this place will no doubt come in handy due to the sheer amounts they have here. I would though recommend starting at Badlands and chatting to the owner first, as he can really spend a bit of time with you and maybe take you through things, in a less frantic and busy environment. read more

If anyones ever been to a guitar shop in the States, then they'll know that this shop is pretty similar. Its pretty big as the place goes back a fair old way and there is just about evey different kind of guitar, amp or drum kit to chose from. I recently bought a Squire Telecaster from them and a little practice amp as I hadn't played for yonks and they were so helpful. No hard sales and no trying to impress you with long complicated solos. I do pop in now and again for the odd tip and bit of advice and they're always happy to help. Fantastic shop! read more

The largest music store in Brighton to my knowledge. Certainly the largest that I encountered. There is a separate audio department with it's own entrance next door. Situated in the heart of the Lanes this is the kind of place you can easily end up without trying. Admittedly I only ever casually walked through the store a few times, I never really interacted with the staff or made any purchases but I think you'd be hard pressed to find something another music store of this caliber in Brighton. read more

My go to place for any musical equipment. The staff here are extremely knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you may have. I have thought in the past that they occasionally do come across as a little aloof, but this is musicians for you. I find leads, cables and microphones competitively prices, along with some synths, but other items can be pretty expensive. GAK do have great deals online so might be worth having a look on their online store. You can try out pretty much any of the equipment or instruments before you buy. read more

My interest lies strictly in the six and 12 string beauties on display in this shop, but if the range of keyboards is anything like as comprehensive as the guitars then aficionados should find their itch well and truly scratched. The staff are approachable and knowledgeable and the customer is positively encouraged to get a model down from the wall to put it thoughts paces. The place buzzes with the sound of sixteen-note runs, power chords, and the new kid on the block demonstrating that he's got a fuzz box and he's gonna use it. Notable items in stock when I visited today included a custom de luxe Telecaster (£1,799), a Les Paul Sparkle (£2,399) and a 1964 Ephiphone Casino ('Just Like Macca's!' £2.991). Oh boy! If you're in to musical instruments (well, guitars, amps & keyboards & drums, further down the road), this is a veritable toy shop of a store. It may look small and very yellow on the outside, but it's like a Tardis within. GAK, as it's known to those in the know, has a massive stock as, in addition to the physical shop, they are a significant and well respected on-line retailer. I was lucky enough to go in with an avid guitarist who walked me through all the stock, pointing out those guitars that best fitted my requirements and honing my choice to two, only one of which I played and bought! The staff are all enthusiasts too and I'm sure would have used the same experiential approach. I was certainly given plenty of time to play and there was no obvious sales pressure, which is something that's worth extra points in my book. With its unsurpassed collection of gear ranging from guitars to amps and accessories, GAK is often seen as Brighton's leading music shop. However, I would argue that due to price mark-ups and poor service it's not as good as it could be. Yes it offers you the opportunity to try out a wide range of products but often the staff make you feel less than willing to actually pipe up and ask them anything. I'd say that GAK's best feature is its part exchange policy, which usually offers good value for money on most exchanges. For example, I recently did a straight swap with an original Fender Jag-Stang for a 1985 Telecaster Plus, which I was expecting to pay at least an extra £80 for. As it has the monopoly on the guitar market, GAK is unavoidably the best place to find what you need, however, that doesn't excuse it from the plethora of small faults that disturb what would otherwise be one of the best guitar shops in the UK. read more

Centre or superstore? If amped up sounds is what you are after, this place will undoubtedly have it, and they will be able to make the sound make most other sounds you can imagine as well. This place is pretty iconic in the Lanes with its bright yellow paint and massive guitar cut out. When you see it it reminds you of what a musical city Brighton is, there are many small bands and solo artists here, all strumming away in bedrooms and rehearsal rooms. I was looking to buy some new gear to update my studio, so i decided to go to one of the only music stores in Brighton, which would be GAK. From the outside it does not look appealing to the eye, the yellow and red combined together create a circus vibe, so all ready i was unsure whether or not to go in. After finally going in i walked around and no one asked if i needed help with anything and when i did find help the guy seemed as though he was not keen to even explain what each of the products i was looking at entailed. I am really disapointed with the service here. They have a great selection of items and are often in stock with almost all items. But would i spend alot of time in the shop?... no... they tend to push you into buying the "more expensive" version of what you are after. I hope your visit was better then mine... read more

The GAK is a pretty standard guitar shop that sells most of your musical needs. However, the choice is limited and the staff are clearly snobs. The drum cavern, however, is very helpful and has better choice, but the guitar and electronic shop is expensive and limited. read more

Went in here with my son. A superb range of guitars available. Has pretty much anything a guitar player could want all in one store. The range of guitars as I say seems to go on and on. Maybe a few more music books would have got this shop a 5 star rating. Very busy and obviously popular shop. read more

The biggest selection of guitars I've seen in Brighton - acoustics, electrics, bass - all variteis of each. Staff all know there stuff, and you coud spend hours walking around dribbling at the mouth of the different models on show. I have been into this store many times with my boyfriend who is a guitar player and a guitar spotter- i.e. he likes to stand and stare at shiny expensive guitars for minutes on end, starry eyed. I can understand why in this shop- they must have the best and most beautiful collection of guitars for sale in all of..well, I would go so far as to say the whole South of England. I say this because when my boyfriend finally did decide to buy a Gibson- his dream guitar at the time- we took a trip to London and wondered around lots of music shops only to find them all smaller, less knowledgeable and with much less stock than the hallowed Guitar and Amp Center. One trip back to this Brighton Mecca and my boyfriend was kitted out with the MOST beautiful tiger top finish Gibson and a stunning Hughes and Kellner amp- the super cool guy serving us knew the instruments inside out, the amps inside out, the pedals inside out...he knew it ALL. And he gave us a great deal as we bought the two together. I can't praise this place enough basically. read more

Everyone knows the staff at GAK lack even the most basic customer service skills... however I don't expect to be sold a scratched dirty guitar when I'm spending nearly 1600 pounds. Oh and being grunted at and hung up on when I politely ask to speak to the manager isn't great either. Although, calling up and asking to speak the manager didn't seem to work for me as 1)He told me Alex was the manager when in actual fact it's a guy called Max 2)nobody bothered to call me back anyway... Trying to get a refund was quite difficult as well until the words consumer transaction law and solicitor words were used. Go anywhere else... special order it if they don't have it in stock... use this company and eventually you'll regret it. Andertons and Guitar Guitar are way better shops anyway... their staff actually have manners. GAK seem to think they're doing you a favour by letting you hand over your hard earned cash- there's a reason they get a lot of bad reviews on a lot review sites. read more

Took a Fender in to be revamped and cannot fault their professionalism! They were eager to listen and give good advice. Picked up the guitar a couple of weeks later and it plays beautifully and the cost was reasonable. So all in all a very good experience! read more

I ordered a few things from GAK recently - mainly due to the competitive prices. To be honest I have had a few problems, but GAK have always sorted them out promptly and efficiently. For example, I ordered a Digitech pedal which arrived with no power supply in the box. I phoned them and a new supply was sent straight away. I've also had to return an amp and the return & refund was handled very professionally. I would order from GAK again with no hesitation. read more
