Really nice outdoor seating area and we were able to find a seat on a busy night. We ended up moving inside to eat as there were lots of smokers around us. Our server inside was awesome (I didn't get his name sorry). The portion sizes were really good and I had major food envy every time a plate of fish and chips went by. Definitely have to try that next time! The duck was really good and came with a cashew sauce which was nice and different. The hummus platter was very much a sharing plate and came with a nice variety of hummus, olives, tomatoes, feta and a couple of other dips. Absolutely loads of pita too! The chips were also cooked to perfection. Waited 10 mins for a beer as the 3 bartenders on duty walked past numerous times until I said something. I am actually even staying at the Inn as well. The food was good but service was horrible. Almost like they didn't want to be there or it was a bother to them. The refurb has done the pub wonders! It looks great and the back dining room is gorgeous. Pity it's a chain. Service is spotty too, particularly in the restaurant. The food is straight up gastropub fare. Nothing pushes any boundaries but it's all decent enough although some dishes worked better than others. The beetroot salad was the star of the show. Lovely flavours that worked well together. We decided to share it and had to ask for small plates which inexplicably came hot (hot plates for a cold salad - huh?) and when we asked for cold plates, our waitress rolled her eyes at us The mains were a bit more hit and miss. The courgette salad was boring. The dressing needed some tartness and the whole thing just fell flat. The gnocchi was better and I liked how the dumplings had a bit of seared crunchiness to them. But the hot dish was tossed with cold mozzarella which didn't work. Our service was very spotty and our waitress needed a bit more training. Hot plates for our cold salad? Clearing away plates/utensils and then resetting the table with more napkins despite already having ones on our lap? Unable to bring more glasses of the house white that we ordered at the bar because she didn't know what it was? There was a lack of attention to detail to simple things. You cannot miss the Half Moon Pub, with its huge and imposing Edwardian style. Inside it is no different, making no attempt to modernise, this is traditional stained glass, wood clad pub decor, which you either love or hate. The kitchen at the half moon is open from lunch throughout the evening serving pizzas, salads, sandwiches and deserts. The best thing is the amount that goes on in this huge pub. They regularly have live music, DJs playing, pub quizzes and sport nights. The juke box is not at all bad either. read more

The lower-end destination for Herne Hill - it can be a bit aggro in here, but that's mostly to do with the clientele and the surly bar staff. It's actually not a bad pub at all, just not my favourite with some decent alternatives a stone's throw away. They do have a huge screen for the sports though. Just be sure to wear your England football shirt, regardless of the occasion. If you've got shit, faded, tattoos, it's probably worth having them on display too. read more

I recently enjoyed a moderately priced and very tasty glass of red in this quaint local pub, chatting with friends while they sampled some of their delectable homemade pizzas. It was all very pleasant - EVEN THOUGH FOOTBALL WAS PLAYING ON THE TV IN THE OTHER ROOM. This is the mark of a good pub in my book. Let the sports fans get on with their cheering, jeering and general sports loving pursuits, by all means, but let me get on with my quiet chatty drinky pursuits as well. At the Half Moon I can peacefully co-exist with even the most vociferous of football supporters, just as long as we all stay in our designated areas. There's even a gig venue at the back of the place, something I definitely intend to check out properly on my next visit. What a nice pub. read more

I've been here maybe five times, but this is going back to 1979 (I think) so that's an average of once every six years. The feel of the place hasn't really changed in all that time. As of my last visit a few months ago they have free wi-fi, a couple of real ales (I can't remember exactly what, but Adnams Bitter is what pops up in my head), and a TV tuned into Sky Sports (but thankfully with the sound off). I remember feeling surprised that there were so few other people there at the time (Thurs. or Fri. early evening?), but maybe that was a fluke. Gents' toilets are OK for a pub. I dont think there is anything that you could point out definatively and say its poor, so in theory, the pub must be a good one. Right? hmmm not so sure. There seems to be a look to the pub that you would have imagined hasnt changed in decades, and to be honest, if you come back in 20 years time, i think it would still be the same. The best part of the pub is the outside area. It feels like the moment you step off the aeroplane into miami on a summers day. Ive ben there a couple of times, but not in the evening, when the live events start. I prefer to drink in peace and quiet. Overall, if you just want a quick pint or you want to have a cheap night listening to up and coming bands, then i would recommend that you go here, but sadly, it doesnt do it for me. read more

Went to a gig here on Sunday, rather liked the place really. Nice relaxed atmosphere, not a huge range of beer but the Guinness was fine, tables outside were perfect for enjoying a bit of this new "sunshine" thing that's started happening recently. The Half Moon pub is Herne Hill is a nice victorian pub at the bottom of Herne Hill. It has two bars, a snug room and picnic tables outside. It's recently undergone a bit of renovation - the pool table has gone, and the wooden wall that separated the two bars has now been opened up. One thing that has definitely improved is the food - they do a good offer on Mondays 2 pizza's for ten pounds, and served food until late (11pm on Saturdays). The pub also hosts a variety of events and has a regular comedy club and gigs, and a pub quiz on Thursdays. Its open late on the weekends (till 1) and is usually quite quiet. p.s. Visited this pub for the first time yesterday, the beer was OK with quite a good choice of bitters, but the bar staff were downright miserable! I've never had to wait 10 minutes to be served when there's no-one else waiting! I'll be sticking to the Fox and Firkin in future... read more

Been here three times in two weeks. Plus points: lovely food and great dining room. Downsides: service very slow and poor in the pub. Most recent experience having a quiet drink in the garden on an evening completely spoiled by a rowdy bunch of patrons including a girl with a whistle bullying other patrons and making excessive noise, which the staff stood on and ignored. About 10 people left after half an hour of this without staff intervention. I won't come back. read more

A lovely old pub- a converted Victorian Hotel with wood panelling and some excellent guest ales from Youngs and Adnams. You can watch football here or go to gigs and poetry readings and the like in the back room. They do a decent pizza at a reasonable price too. But what makes this pub really great is the bar staff. All 3 of the girls who served me last week were charming and smiley and the vibe that they create gives the pub an excellent friendly atmosphere. Highly recommended. read more

I was disappointed when they removed the pool table although this may be part of the owners' plans to move it a little more upmarket. Parts of the pub (most noticeably the loos) are a little grotty but it has plenty of old style charm and also has a large live music and club venue attached. read more

I have been going to the half moon for more moonsthan I care to remember now. It's always been a music venue, but recently its added a comedy club last Thursdays of the month, and every Tues open mike night music and spoken word, which is very supportive whatever your level of performance is about. The gorgeous Kate J Hastings (see my Youtube video) and Daisy sing there occasionally, and Len the poet is MC (he's so good). The food is Italian stone baked pizza and bruschetta/ciabatta, there's a deal on Monday nights, 2 pizzas and a bottle of wine for £20. read more
