There is a newly constructed walkway that cuts the trip time. The bar has specials throughout the week and there is a brewery right across the walkway. Service throughout the hotel was great, the front desk, bar, cleaning staff. There was usually water out in the lobby, which was nice. At times the trash overflowed or the ice wasn't replenished. But also there was one time when there was citrus water, cucumber water and lemonade out for guests, all at once. I thought that was very thoughtful. I overheard the staff interacting very positively with each other, thanking one another for their help/support. That was great to see. Our room was clean and spacious. AC definitely worked (which I loved, hubs not so much.) Nice big windows and the curtains blocked out most of the light, just not along the top of the windows. No flashing smoke detector, which is a peeve of mine. Speaking of peeves, the bathroom is beautiful. However, I hate that these hotels have taken on these barn doors. I would like to simply close and secure my door. This was worse bc it was a double door, loud and clunky. This led to unnecessary noise at night. Often times, I'd slide the 2 doors together, turn around and one would slide right back open. And no matter what I did, the doors wouldn't close all the way. I included a photo. Moving on, the shower was huge with a double shower head AND a closing shower door. However, the water pressure was very poor. Same goes for the toilet. It would, at times, take several flushes to clear the toilet. TMI, but hey... You've read this far. Lastly, the towels leave little white fibers behind which was a nuisance as well. Overall, the things I mentioned were annoying... But wouldn't keep me from coming back. At least I know what I'm in for next time.

Despite this hiccup, the hotel insists that everyone take the elevator rather than using the stairs (reserved for fire emergency only); the pool seems to be out-of-service this season as well. * some design flaws -- the bathroom's double barn doors seem like a particularly poor choice -- functionally, they're bad at keeping privacy because there is often a gap right in the middle unless you close the doors super carefully; aesthetically, they will seem outdated before long. It had been a very long time…read moresince I had eaten at the former Victorian Station Tea Room, and the Bistro has replaced whatever replaced the tea room. We went for lunch on Tuesday and the place was closed. No hours posted. We tried again on Thursday and voila! it was open. All the tables now are downstairs in the former Ute's gift shop. It is very eclectic in that room with mismatched everything. Upstairs where we used to dine has sofas and coffee tables. I gotta say, the place seems musty and the vibe took me back to some places I'd rather forget about from the early 70's. Parking is scant, kind of a "it's ok to park on the grass" kind of place. I was dining with 2 friends and one would give the place 3 and one a 4. My friend who would give it a 4 said the water was the best water he ever tasted. So there you go. There was one long table reserved but we were the only guests. Before we left 2 more tables had guests. The waitress was very sweet. She handed us paper menus and on the back was a coupon saying free iced tea with lunch purchase, so when she took our drink order I said I would have the special on the back - the iced tea. "Oh no," she told me. "That is a coupon for a flyer they had passed out previously and they just used the flyers to print the menus to save paper." For crying out loud. You give me a menu with a large coupon stating I get a free iced tea, and tell me it doesn't apply. I'm sorry but right there, the iced tea that would have probably cost you five cents to honor, should have been provided. How am I supposed to know the info on the menu isn't valid? So I ordered the afore mentioned water. I believe we all ordered the chicken salad. It was OK. I wouldn't get it again but the menu is still 'under development.' I was told.I asked if the potato salad was made with mayo or mustard, and she told me mayo with a teensy bit of mustard. I ordered it and out came a very yellow mustard filled potato salad that I did not like at all. It was like the kind you get from Food Lion in a big tub and bring to a pot luck when you are too busy to make anything, even though I'm sure it was made fresh. My friend liked it and the other one got potato chips - def NOT homemade. They have live music at some times I guess, and my friend who is an aficionado of live music said he would come back there. He probably won't though. I think he just liked the place better than I did. I can't imagine the sound in there if a band was performing because the tables are right up to the performing space. Since we visited we added it to our list of places for lunch, but the two times I have suggested it I've received a resounding, "No!." So when I will be able to give it another try I don't know. The apartment themselves? Not maintained by the company at all. There is literally NO communicating with them either. We have had problems caused by other maintenance teams that have yet to be addressed including missed safety equipment inspections and neigh constant filth, broken windows, missing door knobs, and non-functional shared laundry room troubles. As a resident you can't get them on the phone - they'll pick up the line and then hang up on you, not even send you straight to voicemail. They REFUSE to email you. They are NEVER in the office. They have lost our lease agreements and had to request one of our copies multiple times. They continue to disregard requests for contact windows and refuse to respect resident's time. They have used the emergency key to force entry into our apartment MULTIPLE times for things we never received notice on such as "Emergency Radon Testing". The only communications we DO get from them are threatening "Community Notices" advising of impending charges should something cosmetically look awry, which aren't even delivered so much as shoved in between our storm doors. Which don't close. So we don't get notice half the time they want to "notify" us of anything. I feel unsafe here not because of the neighborhood but because of the malicious way in which residents are treated.

Tucked away by the entrance of Hampton University is this piece of history. Being an alum of an…read moreHBCU, this one is very special to myself. For those who aren't familiar (and I wasn't until recently), this oak tree is where President Abraham Lincoln stood to give the first Southern reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. And this was a place where newly freed slaves were taught at the Butler School which was built right by the oak tree, which was the beginning of Hampton University as we know it. Tip: There is a small parking lot (Lot 2) where you can park near the tree for free. There is a fence that covers the oak, but behind it is an opening where you can take some pictures up and close. Believe me, it's a sight to see.

The gentlemen running it were incredibly nice and gave us an unforgettable tour of this classic piece of Americana. My parents and I had planned to make the Hampton Carousel a focal point of our recent visit to the area since my mother is a member of the National Carousel Association, and we were so glad we did. This was a gorgeous Sunday and despite that the area was relatively empty. We had very few other folks come by the carousel while we were there and so the two gentlemen running it gave us the grand tour, including of the central support pillar, the electronics adapted to assist the century-old organ, and the other historical artifacts lining the walls. They did so out of the kindness of their hearts and a genuine affection for the carousel and its history, which you just don't see in terms of commitment at most venues anymore. The price for all of this? $1 a ride. What a deal! The carousel ride itself was enjoyable, and it's very cool that they have so many tracks of the hit songs from each year the carousel has been open. You never know what you'll hear next! The pavilion containing the carousel is beautiful and sturdy, which is particularly important when it comes to protecting the carousel for the next century or so. This was a fun experience, and you can't beat the $1 ride price. Genuinely great fun for everyone, make sure you stop by if you're in the area! Hampton Carousel (HC) is ready for Halloween! Our kids love carousels so I knew this would be the perfect little pit stop before we made our way back to the other side. HC is located right next to the Virginia Air and Space Science Center. - Parking - There was not a dedicated parking lot for the HC that we could see, so luckily we found street parking nearby and it was free. - TLC - Two staff members were running the place. One by the admissions desk and one operating the carousel. The woman by the admissions started her spiel like a seasoned actress rehearsing her lines for the next blockbuster movie. She did not skip a beat. She told us that the HC turns 101 years old this year! Wow, pretty neat that they have kept this piece of history well maintained. - Pricing and Ride - The cost is one whole dollar. Cash only. And you get your dollar's worth too. The ride seemed quite long, like a good 5 minutes, but maybe that's just me. I was riding the sleigh (that doesn't even move!) and I was feeling a little queasy by the end LOL. Our kids on the other hand, couldn't get enough. HC was decorated for Halloween. The women encouraged the kids to make their way around the carousel to the different spooky and ghoulish figures to nab some candy before it spooked them. The kids had fun doing that! After standing in line for over two hours the performer was let on stage and the crowd outside of the venue was not contained. The doors of the venue was shut.
