The people are friendly, courteous and conversational. I have yet to try the food but from what I hear, its been highly rated. Its a great place to unwind after a hard day and the sheer peace and quiet of the rural area is welcome. Walking into the Holly Bush is like going back in time to a time when pubs had character. We were greeted immediately with smiles and friendly waitresses and barmaids, and sat in your standard pub chairs, complete with cushions that don't match the standard ugly carpet... The food was basic, with two roasts of the day, and a well filled specials board. I narrowed down to three meaty choices, knowing my impending pescetarian house mate, and we picked drinks whilst we narrowed down our options. We each ended up going for exactly the same; blueberry ale, Baked Brie wedges to start, and a main of steak and ale pie, chips and veggies. The Brie were tasty, but definitely the pre packed sort, with a side salad. The main was huge, a square pie, with tasty, short pastry, and plenty of big chunks of meat, with thick chips, green beans (that had kept their green-ness, hurrah!) cauliflower, and sweet, almost slightly caramelised tasting carrots. All served with a generous boat of gravy. The blueberry ale was clear, deep purple, with a slightly lilac head, and a pleasant taste of fresh juicy blueberries without overtaking any hoppy beeryness. All reasonably priced, and tasty to boot. If you fall upon this place on a walk (about a minute from the old boat lift, you can't miss it) I'd recommend popping in for an ale if nothing else. The service was good and I thought the prices were reasonable. We both had the steak burger which comes with chunky chips and onion rings. A big, well-furnished building, it serves an excellent range of pub grub that takes the pork scratchings I normally get and gives it a swift kick in the crackling. The stretch of tranquil water it sits next to is actually a tributary to the Mersey although it feels nicer than that. Relaxing here on a sunny day is a great way of whiling way the hours. Just watch out for the buzzing flies and mardy staff. They're both an easily tolerable pest.

The food took a very long time to arrive, but when staff seemed to be itching to clear our starter course plates away we assumed that the main courses must be ready to be brought out, however they were not. We waited another ten or fifteen minutes for these. I had the fish cakes to start, which were large but didn't taste of much. The main course of chicken stroganoff was the biggest disappointment. I opted for half rice, half chips, and the ratio of carbs to stroganoff was completely wrong. My dad's 'senior' portion of chicken curry was certainly no smaller than my (supposedly) full size portion of stroganoff; he just had less rice and fewer chips. This might not seem like a big issue to some, but when presented with a plateful of chips and rice, with a small amount of stroganoff on the side, it ruined the meal for me. The main course was otherwise tasty, and so I'm sure there are satisfying menu options available, but I won't be rushing back to the Antrobus Arms.
