    Southern Fried Chicken

The food looks absolutely amazing, the service was great and the surrounding area is gorgeous even including an outside sitting area. The food is southern but honestly was disappointing, not terrible but not amazing. What was amazing is the cornbread! My entire table had mashed potatoes & it was weirdly thick, the texture was completely off, almost like it was made with too much corn starch. We had a chicken that was very blood and undercooked, but received a full refund for that order, which was very much appreciated. The Mac & cheese is mid honestly, the seasoning on the chicken was just okay, the seafood platter was also just okay. I would honestly recommend the hatch handhelds + cornbread of course, not the entrees. The appetizers were good.

I was in town for the Virginia governors housing conference, and my group decided to check out this spot for a late dinner on a Thursday night. This restaurant is located in the middle of downtown Roanoke adjacent to several other restaurants and a food court as well. So there's definitely options. Parking seems to be fairly limited, but I'm sure there is a parking garage or two nearby. We walked from the Hotel Roanoke conference center so parking wasn't a concern. As we entered into the restaurant, we were immediately greeted by the hostess, who also seem to be the main wait staff and the bartender. She did a great job of holding the table down while also manning other tables and running orders back-and-forth. This is a place with a pretty extensive menu for its size and so we were pretty surprised at the depth of choices. However, I found the food to be overall well prepared, and pretty enjoyable. Drinks were also good as we ordered a couple of the specials off of the menu. Definitely a place. I would return to again the next time I'm in Roanoke.

A group of 4 of us went to TH on a Tuesday evening. We sat outside despite it being chilly since the outdoor area was heated. Our server was polite, helpful, and very accommodating. We did have to switch tables since our first table was not steady. Throughout our meal there was a lingering alternative smoke smell, similar to those who garden iykyk. The music was very good, early 00's r&b. Our food was overall good. Nothing overly special. Two of us had chicken sandwiches, which were great except we both agreed the chicken was dry. One person had a cobb salad, which was very good, and the other had shrimp, which were flavorful. Not a bad experience, not the best, and not the first choice if we come back to visit.

Where is the cheese?? Great drinks and great service. But for a place that has Mac and cheese bowls on the menu, you would think that the side of Mac and cheese would be cheesy. I'm not sure where the cheese was, but it was not in my bowl. Chicken sandwiches were good but dry. Hush puppies were excellent!!! Again, great drinks, service, and hush puppies. Don't bother with the Mac n cheese.

Mashed, boxed potatoes Mac & cheese Meatloaf with gravy.. request no gravy... cornbread was like Jiffy mix.

Ambiance was exciting. Wait staff were kind. BUT, the food however was 5/10. The Mac & cheese was disappointing. Meatloaf would have been a 10 but the brown gravy on top wasn't appetizing. Mushrooms were good. Chicken tenders for my child was a chicken breast cut into slices. I really want to come back but, my first experience today was disappointing.

June 23, 2025 - 2 for lunch after HOURS of driving. Came off the major highway about 6 miles out of our way..... reviews and comments looked good. Wife got the Caesar salad with steak. She reported fresh greens and a nicely cooked product/steak. 9/10 I was looking for a veggie/vegan option-like thing and got the veggie handheld. I had been driving for about 6 1/2 hours up from Murphy NC along 81 so I might have not read what I thought I was getting... the fried green tomato, plant based patty, and the brioche bun were pretty oily and coasted and fried.... I actually ended up with indigestion later from all the fried oil in the green tomato breading and exterior, the plant based patty as well was grilled in oil or somewhere and I am not sure what the plant based composition was made of??? this was a 4/10 type of item for me. I got a side of baked beans that were okay but wildly sugary and sweet and liquidy. 7/10 Service was pretty good and the pricing was moderate and typically at about $15 for the veggie burger, the Caesar and Steak at $19 was in range.

My co-workers came here for lunch and we all got something different. All of us thought our meals were delicious. I got "The Heat" chicken sandwich with fries. I would definitely eat it again!! The service was top notch! The ambience is very causal. Located downtown, I bet this place gets a ton of business during the day! I'll definitely eat here again!

The atmosphere is amazing, right downtown in center of the square. Indoor, outdoor,& bar seating available. My friend and I came for brunch and I got the chicken and biscuit and it was divine, she got the chicken and waffle sampler, equally as yummy. The many different mimosa flavors was unlike any other brunch place I've been! Impressive!

A relaxing environment where to enjoy an amazing Southern cuisine can't even begin to describe what The Hatch is all about. After being awarded the Triad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, I decided that it would be appropriate this year to go back to this restaurant and write a follow-up review, since my initial review was one of my reviews that contributed to me obtaining this highly esteemed Award. Today I decided to revisit this restaurant and enjoy some good Southern Cruise. The Host warmly greeted me and took me to my table. My server Gemma soon arrived with a big smile to take my order. I asked her if they had any Mocktails. She told me that she can have one made. I asked for a Margarita Mocktail. Amazingly she came back with three alternative Margarita's flavor. I picked the peach one. What their bartender created was a masterpiece of Mocktail. It tasted as good as it looked. To start off with I order their Hushpuppies appetizer with their special butter. They are the best Hushpuppies I've ever eaten anywhere, and I've eaten some good Hushpuppies. So crunchy in the outside and soft and flavorful in the inside. As my main entrée I once again ordered The Fried Pork Chop Dinner with fries and salad being my two sides. They make amazing Fried Pork Chops with only a tiny bone. I had their Blue Cheese salad dressing. It was all amazingly delicious, including their corn bread that was included with this entrée. The server Gemma provided excellent customer service. She graciously pointed out to me that they had reasantly introduced Peach Cobbler as a new dessert, with Vanilla Ice-cream on top. I definitely ordered it and it was a magnificent Grand Finale to a wonderfully dinning experience. I definitely highly recommend this restaurant if you want to enjoy some excellent Southern cuisine, accompanied by amazing cocktails, in a relaxing dining environment, with wonderful customer service.

My wife had The Hatch on our short list when visiting the area. We planned to explore more of downtown including the Roanoke City Market but we did not have the time during this trip. The market is the longest running continuous city market in the country and The Hatch is located within the City Market building. We circled the block and decided to park in a 5 story parking garage nearby and walked. We arrived shortly before 5pm on a Sunday. It was not too busy and we were offered either indoor or outdoor seating. We chose to sit inside and we were seated immediately at a table and provided menus. Our server, Kimba stopped by and introduced herself and took our drink orders. As usual, we asked Kimba for suggestions on her favorite and most popular menu items. She was friendly and helpful. She also let us know they were out of both the buffalo chicken dip and potato salad. We decided to order the hush puppies and honey butter to share. My wife chose the Chicken Fried Chicken which includes fried chicken covered with gravy, two sides and a corn muffin. She chose the whipped sweet potato and coleslaw as her two sides. I chose the Buffalo Chicken Mac Bowl. Our hush puppies arrived in a timely manner and were piping hot. After they cooled a bit we had no problem polishing them off. We both love a good hush puppy, especially when served with honey butter. Kimba stopped back in to check on us and let us know she was told they are also out of coleslaw and it wouldn't be ready for 45 minutes. My wife chose the collard greens in place of the coleslaw. Our orders arrived and looked delicious! We immediately dug in and enjoyed everything. Kimba came back several times and we felt well taken care of. Overall it was a good experience but we were perplexed as to how they ran out of three staple menu items. Perhaps they were short staffed in the kitchen or maybe this was an unusual occurrence, not sure.

Every time I dine at this restaurant I have a memorable dining experience. One of my favorite items…read moreon their summer menu is their R&R Hanger Steak. A Hanger steak is a long, flat, flavorful cut reminiscent of flank steak and skirt steak, only more tender. In the US, hanger steak is most commonly called "hanging tender" or "butcher's steak." It gets the latter nickname because it was historically a "secret" cut that butchers would keep for themselves rather than sell to the public. Other names you might see on menus for this cut are Hanging tenderloin and Bistro steak. All that I know is that it's the best piece of meat that I have ever eaten and it has been at this restaurant. So that was the main reason I came to dine here today and my expectations were completely fulfilled. When I arrived, I was greeted by a friendly, young lady with the warm welcoming of a regular guest. She happily took me to the table I had requested when I made my reservation online. It was a table facing the bar with their open kitchen on the right of me. I like to watch the bartenders and chefs in action as they create their amazing drinks and culinary masterpieces. Immediately after I was seated my server Tim came by with the usual familiar greeting, welcoming me once again for returning to dine there and thanking me for being such a loyal customer. I had the usual cold water and this time started off with one of their Butterfly Kisses Mocktails. It both looked and tasted amazing. For appetizer I had their VA Oyster Wraps, followed by their special salad of the day. And for the main entrée I had their R&R Hanger Steak. Everything was timed appropriately and was served at the right timing. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the high-quality of their food and drinks. For dessert I had my favorite, their Dark Chocolate Panna Cotta. What a way to end a spectacular dinner. I highly recommend this restaurant for an exceptional fine dining experience.

My friend and I walked in at 9 o'clock EXACTLY on a Thursday night to have a drink. The sign on the door said they were open until 10:00. There were 4 or 5 tables seated, enjoying dinner and cocktails. 5 or 6 people at the bar. There was no one to start with at the actual hostess stand and servers saw us standing at the door but did not approach us even though there was an hour left on their operating time. So we walked directly to the bar and sat down. We had just eaten at Fork in the Alley so all we wanted was one drink and we figured an hour was plenty of time to get that done. The first thing the bartender said to us was "The kitchen is closed." Not "hello" or "Hey what can I get you?" but the kitchen is closed. I said "oh I'm sorry I thought you closed at 10:00." He said "well, that's up for debate we were actually discussing that right now. We're basically closed but you can have a drink because it's not like the rest of these people are going anywhere." What do you mean that's up for discussion? Your hours say you're open till 10 o'clock, it's 9 o'clock I have an hour to eat and have drinks! The other bartender, or perhaps he was only a bar back, gave us a very disapproving look. I get it, I work in the food service industry. I'm a server at a 4 diamond restaurant, and I hate when people walk in minutes before we close and want to sit down. But if we post that we're open until 10 and you walk in at 9:45 I'm going to serve you and treat you like anyone else that walked in at 6:00 because it's your tips that pay my bills and put food on my table. It's definitely not the hourly wage I get from my employer! And as a server I never walk into a restaurant with less than 30 minutes to close. And it's more like an hour if I'm looking to eat a meal. I know you want to go home. When it's the end of the night and I'm at work, so do I! But there's an hour left and I wanted one drink. That's it! We continued to get disappointed looks from a few other employees even though we weren't the last people in the place. I told my friend (it's 9:45 at this point) that we obviously need to go since servers are standing around looking at us like we've got the plague. We paid our bill and promptly left. Two couples still at the bar. It's 9:59 right now as I'm writing this at home (you're still technically open btw) but I left feeling like I had stayed hours past your closing time. It's a real shame because we really enjoyed our drinks! They were super yummy! And I'm always getting asked by guests where's a good place for a late night cocktail and I used to recommend The River and Rail right along with Lucky's because we had a shuttle that would take guests out, but after tonight I won't be doing that anymore. Because there's nothing worse than feeling unwelcome at a restaurant that is still open.

This morning I drove my pearl white Lexus up to it and parked in front of the sidewalk at the parallel parking with a one-hour limit. There is so much history behind this place that the excitement of the moment made the breakfast experience more momentous. Once inside, a young gentleman who has been working there for over two years now greeted me and immediately made me feel at home. He took my order and almost at the same time started making my toast and frying my eggs. In no time at all I had my order in front of me. I noticed and made him aware that one egg was missing. He made it right by frying me another egg over easy and I didn't mind because of his positive attitude and very unique personality. He also asked me how I'd like my coffee and prepared it just as requested with two creams and three sugars. Every one of the three eggs were perfectly fried over easy and I sprinkled a salt and pepper mixture over them. The bread of the toast was so fresh and tasty braised in butter. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the high-quality of their food. I'm looking forward to returning one day at lunch time to taste some of their menu items of which they are known for. Starting with their Cheesy Western, the tavern legendary trademark burger served with a fried egg, cheese, pickles, and a sweet-and-tangy homemade cabbage relish. Or maybe a bowl of their secret-recipe chili served with onions. Or their trademark hot dog served Coney Island-style with chili, relish, mustard, and unions. All comfort food that make you feel good and bring a sense of nostalgia, warmth, and satisfaction. I highly recommend this small, historic, eatery for a one-of-a-kind, memorable, dining experience. One that you'll cherish and hold dear forever.

They offer it with bean chili and you can get onions added in. The place is a 10 seat dinner and at roughly 2 am on a Saturday, will have at leave 15-20 people crowded it looking for a post bar meal. They employees were nice and will talk to you about what to get and make recommendations. I will say, this is somewhere I liked trying but may not return.

Until that one day that you decided to stop, and explore a whole new culinary world. After having been selected as number 4 of the Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I also was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at the Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Coach & Four Restaurant, in Roanoke Virginia is a perfect example. At first it was just a large colonial house turned restaurant on Williamson Road in Roanoke, Virginia. But once I decided to stop and explore it, it has become one of my favorite restaurants in Roanoke, Virginia. Its uniqueness lies not only in its colonial atmosphere and in its classic American cuisine, but primarily in its amazing staff that from the time you walk in begin to make your fine-dining experience one that you'll always remember and cherish dearly. Their refined behavior creates a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere that create unforgettable dining experiences. Today, after having gone through one of the worst snow and ice storms in years, I decided to not allow the icy roads to hold me back, and requested a Lyft to take me there for dinner. As soon as I arrived, the friendly host came out to greet me and take me to a table of my choice. My server from the first time I dined there, happened to recognize me and took me to the booth where I had dined the first time I ever dined there. We discussed a Mocktail for me to drink and she came back with an amazing drink, and a small meatball as an "amuse-bouche," designed to prepare ones palate for the meal. After studying the restaurant's extensive menu, I ordered their Bacon Wrapped Scallops as appetizer. For my main entrée I ordered the Prime Rib Combination that consisted of a generous portion of roasted prime rib served with a delicious lobster tail. For the two sides that came with my main entree, I had their famous tossed salad with their in-house made blue cheese dressing and a loaded baked potato. The scallops were not so big in size but big in flavor and texture. The salad was amazing, as always. The main entrée looked well at first, but when I cut into the prime rib it was too well done to be able to appreciate the flavor of the meat. But my server came by, as promised, to see if the prime rib was cooked to my satisfaction, and when I told her it was too well done for my original request of medium-rare, she gracefully apologized and took it back. Returning shortly with another piece of prime rib more to my liking. For dessert I had a slice of Pecan Pie a la mode, which by the way was amazingly delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant for one of the best fine-dining experiences of your life. And am looking forward to returning and ordering ahead of time their Baked Alaska to have for dessert.

They appeared to be Senior Citizens and one had handicap issues, and the funny part was, I don't think they even heard him, even though he was yelling. What was a decent meal turned into an uneasy situation.
