This is a cute inn. For me, the room was quite warm. You can open windows, but the windows are old and don't stay open. I was very hot when I tried to sleep. There's no air conditioning. The room itself was nice, clean, and comfortable. You need to register your vehicle if you park in their car park. Their restaurant and bar and great. I had the steak with peppercorn sauce and it was tasty. They offered local brews and scotch. You need to make a reservation with the restaurant as it can get full quickly. The room itself is more noisy as it is closer to the tracks. I wouldn't stay here again due to temperature, unable to keep windows open, no AC, and how loud the railway is. But it was cute. read more

The Hawes Inn, at the far end of South Queensferry is one of the more well known pubs-hotels in the area. From the outside it looks quite traditional and quite small, however looks can be deceiving. The main bar is quite large and has an extensive bar. It has a good selection of ales, including Deuchers, so I was very chuffed with that. The bar has a good amount of wooden tables, suitable for groups during lunches and dinners. The exterior is quite traditional and at times the bar, due to its size partly, does feel quite cold at times. The food on offer is mostly your normal pub group food and is not that expensive, but not that cheap. Defiantly worth a try if your in the area. read more

Beautiful accommodation between railway bridges - a slightly technical character might consider it romantic :) Their bar offers not only all kinds of local beers, but a large range of international ones as well. Their cuisine is surprisingly good! The rooms are not very large, but clean. One star down for only two things: asking for a room with a sea view is foolishness, as, uh, on the ground floor your curtains are always drawn. And all the time something kept breaking: napkin boxes, soap boxes - for a while we felt like a demolition squad: D But altogether: very lovely accommodation and the price ratio to the quality is highly in favour of the quality :) Krásné bydlení mezi železničními mosty - pro lehce technický typ jak z definice romantiky :) Na baru mají všemožná lokální piva a nemalou řádku i těch mezinárodních. First of all, what I love about the Hawes is the coziness, and warmth, and it's the perfect location on a cold winter day if you want a hot chocolate and quiet dinner. What I strongly dislike about the Hawes...hmm...how long have you got? First of all the attitude of the staff ranges from either inattentive and incompetent to straight-up snooty. The manager has a very noticable falseness too her and she is on total autopilot. No warmth to her at all. When I came to her with a frustration she was not very friendly and clearly is not capable of dealing with situations that lie outside her pre-programmed parameters. The staff frequently get orders wrong or just don't pay any attention to you. Even on quiet days the tables will still be uncleared and dirty long after guests leave. On my second-last visit we were given 3 different waiters and the last one, despite making about 2 trips to our table, seemed disappointed that he wasn't getting a tip! This is not a place that relies on repeat business. It's geared toward the tourists who want a drink after getting a picture of the bridge. They are not interested in making your visit a nice experience, they just want your money. Avoid. read more

A few weeks ago, a group of us decided to have an out of town day so went to the Deep Sea World (which I would recommend) and then back to The Hawes Inn in South Queensferry. I will admit when I was first told we were heading to the Hawes in I may have misconstrued it, so was always going to be a bit disappointed. However the lack of exotic dancers wasn't the only thing wrong with this pub. Found (difficultly from the train station - you have to walk through a wood to get to it) right on the Firth, the pub is in a great location and is in a large building with a good sized building so should have been really good. This was not the case. The service was terrible; bless her, the girl working was on her first day and din't know what the hell was going on but the manageress just stood at the other end of the bar watching her struggle for about 10 minutes before she reluctantly came over to help. After that palaver we ordered some food, which was decidedly average. It's hard to mess up a steak sandwich, burgers, and scampi, but they gave it a good go. On the plus side, the pub is really nice inside and is huge, so if there are a few of you, it's a good size to accommodate you all. The bar is pretty massive as well, with an extensive selection of drinks, especially wines. This is a pub that should be really good, it just seems to be let down by staff that don't really give a damn. read more

This is a lovely decorative pub that I stopped by when I was in South Queensferry. Their was lots of tables and clean bathrooms. I had a look around and it seemed very charming. It is a nice place to take a break and relax. read more

We ended up here after doing the Shore walk from Cramond. It was a Sunday and it was very, very busy. It was very obviously the staff were flat out either because it was so busy or they were short staffed. I completely understand so I can't be too picky since having worked in customer service, I really felt bad for them. However, they did manage to come clean the table and eventually came back to take our food order. Getting our drinks at the bar was very quick, so that was a plus to at least have drinks sorted quickly. We only ordered a few nibbles, which includes a cheese board, the Mediterranean bread board and the beef pie. The cheese board was good and we a nice thing to share. I didn't try to beef pie, but the group thought it was okay. Very big size, but very sauce filled. It was not the thick filling one would expect from a pie, and looked more like gravy. The breads were okay, but nothing special as it was just served with olive oil. It is a very quaint pub and a nice warm place to stop after the long walk in he cold, but as far as dining goes, it is not really my cup of tea. I think it would be nicer if it wasn't as busy, so maybe on a weekday for an afternoon stop. read more

This is a friendly and welcoming inn, although hesitant about their refit about 8 years ago which removed a lot of the beams which were scrawled upon supposedly by Robert Louis Stevenson, it hasn't changed much and the back room remains where Stevenson drank, there are pictures and memorabilia relating to Stevenson and the Ferry (South Queensferry). This room can be segregated for small functions (around 20 seated). The menu has recently changed and apart from the usual pub classics (scampi, steak, bangers and mash, prices start from 6.95) they now offer lunchtime specials where one course is 5.95 and two courses are 7.95. The choices include soup of the day, breaded mushrooms, steak sandwich and chips, other lighter bites, ice cream and apple pie. The specials board usually has at least one fish dish, locally caught. The staff are friendly and helpful and nothing is every any effort for them. The drinks on offer are the usual bar drinks and a reasonable selection of soft drinks including mixed fruit juices (cranberry and orange is a popular favourite). Coffee is fresh not instant. The Christmas lunches and Sunday lunches are very popular (Christmas lunches 12.95 and Sunday lunch 7.95), with very ample portions. This Inn even boasts an open fire, the two tables adjacent are always busy on cold days. Views out over the bay give you a good view of the Forth Rail Bridge. The car park (to the rear) has ample parking for around 40 cars, although if entering the car park from the Edinburgh road (not the main road adjacent to the shore), then please be careful of the potholes when driving down this single track road to the car park. This entrance road is just that, an entrance road it is not an exit. Exit is by the road adjacent to the shore (this can also be used an entrance to the car park although drive slowly as this is next to a busy car garage). In the summer, park away from the trees at the back of the car park, sap from the trees ends up on your car. There is a small beer garden outside the Hawes both to the front and the rear although being right on the main road the garden at the front gives you an amazing backdrop to your lunch. read more

Over St Andrews weekend, The Man and I planned a day out that included a few hours perusing the pubs in South Queensferry. In the mood for pub grub, we planned to finish the day at the Hawes Inn for a meal. When we arrived, it was pretty dead - just a small handful of tables in what's actually a pretty large dining room. Despite this, there were several tables that hadn't been cleared. Slow restaurant + dirty tables doesn't give the best first impression. A sign instructed us to order at the bar, so we decided to start with drinks and sit in the "snug" where drinks and sharing platters could be had, but not full meals. I opted for the largely advertised mulled cider (£3.50). I was given a little glass that was probably about a half pint. Quite pricey for a half pint of cider with spices and orange in it. Not keen to eat in the empty dining room, we opted for a sharing platter in the snug. It came quickly and was ... fine. It was a bit underwhelming but I guess that fit with our whole Hawes Inn experience. As per our first impression, our empty glasses and empty platter were never cleared while we were there. All in all, not exactly the highlight of our day out. It's got to be pretty dire when you go somewhere expecting to have a meal and end up leaving after enough of a snack to tide you over until you can get home and make proper food. read more

I agree with the previous poster in general. The food is fairly standard pub fare but is cheap enough. The service leaves a bit to be desired - you may have to prompt the staff occasionally, especially during peak periods. It is family friendly with regards to the menu and the fact there is seating in the garden area is a bonus but a bit more emphasis on things for children to do wouldn't go amiss. Also, if you are unlucky enough to get a seat next to the staff stations you can hear a bit of gossiping and griping which, although at times amusing, can strike you as unprofessional. read more

Went to the Hawes Inn for dinner and it was fine, but not good enough that you'd be rushing back. The food is quite typical pub fare - fish & chips, pies etc. I had the scampi which was pretty decent and the steak pie also looked quite nice - there's a comfort factor in knowing what you're going to get with pub food and in this respect it didn't disappoint. The service wasn't quite so good - our waitress was lovely, but seemed to be the only one working across the restaurant area, so attracting attention was always a hassle. This becomes frustrating when you have to wait for the menus, then wait to order, then wait for your bill... If I was planning to come to South Queensferry for a meal, I'd try to book into Orocco Pier along the road or one of the other restaurants in the High Street rather than the Hawes Inn, however as a backup it's handy to have. read more

What a lovely pub! My mum was up to visit & staying in crammond, having popped into the crammond inn we decided to go else where... So we drove to south queensferry to see the bridges & try the pub there - we were so glad we did! Lovely view, lovely pub, lovely service. Having wanted fish originally, I ordered steak, mum had duck & Andrew also had steak - all were delicious! At £2.75 for a portion of chips, they wanted to be good, and they were, if a little on the meagre side! Steaks were delicious, juicy, but rare when asking for medium rare. No need to order sauce at £1.50 a go, as the steak is so yummy without. Mums duck was a little over done, but really tasty sauce. The menu was very good, substantial, and they do fish menu on Fridays too. They serve til 10, and have free wifi. Ladies toilets are upstairs, quite a walk away, but there is a disabled toilet downstairs for those of us with sore knees post half marathon! The desert menu is equally impressive, we had apple and gooseberry crumble with ice cream & custard, and trio of chocolate deserts - delicious! The profiteroles are MASSIVE, but choc torte and brownies were hard to beat! All in all, it was really great and I'd thoroughly recommend :) read more

We booked a table on line for 5 on a Sunday evening and specified the "Robert Louis Stevenson Room" We arrived on time and there were plenty of spare tables to be had but we were placed in the middle table in a nook at the far end of the bar in fact as far away as possible from where we asked to be placed, when asked if a table could be had where requested, we were ignored then abandoned. They were out of most of their beer and of the one I ordered only one pint was had before we ran out of it as well. We ordered our food and since no one else came into the restaurant when we were ordering we were all assuming we would get what we ordered: wrong. The waiter came back 15 mins after the order was placed to advise 2 members of our party that they were out of their choices. Service was slow, for a barely populated restaurant. The beer choice was almost none existent due to them running out. When interaction did occur the staff were friendly and apologetic but management need to seriously review their resourcing and training if this is normal, and, given previous reviews I think ti is. read more

Excellent pub in a great location. I had the french onion soup to start, which was among the best I've ever had. The previous champion was at the Langham in London, but this was even better. The cheese toast instead of the cheese and bread on top was a nice touch. Wife and I each had the fish & chips. Chips were nice enough but the fish, man it was amazing. And huge. The Hawes in (featured in Robert Louis Stevensons -Kidnapped) is sited right under the forth rail bridge and has an open fire. The eating area is made up of lots of cosy little rooms with lots of nooks and crannies. Food here alright - more of a casual dining experience. You order at the bar and are then given a wooden spoon with your order number on. Can be very busy in the summer. We used to visit fairly regular but noticed that menu didn't change that often. On the upside the staff are friendly and helpful - a great place to catch up with friends over a long lunch read more

I love this place! It's really the best place in Queensferry on a cold day, when you can snuggle up next to a real fire and enjoy the fantastic view. The food is excellent and reasonably priced and the drinks are cheap too. Very highly reccommended. read more

The Hawes Inn has recently had a bit of a makeover recently with a more foodie friendly menu that is worth a try and has been running taster evenings to try to entice regulars away from the burger menu. That said, I do come back for the burgers, and the deserts are really good. However, the interior does seem to be fitted with lights that make it darker read more

This is a lovely wee pub with a good pint and a nice view. On a sunny day you can sit outside with beautiful views over the Forth to North Queensferry. The food at the Hawes is good, it has favourites like fish and chips but also has soem slightly fanicier stuff. The prices are reasonable and the staff are always friendly. Just make sure you sit outside or get a window seat because it tends to be a bit dark inside. read more

Nice big room, but the beds are very soft. Mixed levels of service down in the pub. One waitress was good enough to take our order in front of a large group so we weren't waiting for ages. Another waiter was rather dismissive. Chewing gum on duty and wearing trainers with jeans. Not great. read more

This is quite an old fashioned pub/restaurant. Food was ok, nothing spectacular but the prices for both food and drink were reasonable. Lovely views from the tables outside, right next to the two forth bridges. read more
