Tremendous....although we did get carried away and ordered far too much. I would reccommend 2 people share 3 starters and 5 mains or 5 staters 4 mains + side dish of chips and veg. Well worth a visit. This pub is dog friendly but beware resident cat "snug" is first in the pecking order for all those leftovers.

Although we did get carried away and ordered far too much, but at these prices who cares. The food was seriously good for what it is, and I will recommend making the little trip (and probably getting lost like I did) to hunt down this quaint little gem.

There was a choice of curry, rice, chips, homemade cheese & onion pie, salad and coleslaw for about £7 per head. We also had half of the pub reserved for us and 2 bar staff for our party and and homemade sausage rolls on the bar. There was prosecco on arrival for the guests, which cost £15 per bottle, and they were accommodating, catering for differing dietary requirements and bringing in limoncello on request. They also let us bring the cake and balloons in advance. Would definitely recommend for parties of a maximum size of 45 (more if you're able to hire out the entire pub).

The food arrived piping hot and I swear there was half a cow on my plate - just so much meat! AND absolutely lashings of gravy - its like they knew the way into my heart yet again! Plenty of creamy mash, roast potatoes and all the trimmings including cauliflower cheese cooked to perfection although personally I would have liked a little more cheese but I'm a greedy guts. And lastly, the Yorkshire... large, crispy, gravy sodden perfection. I wanted a roast. I got a great one. And since I've last been they've renovated the garden area. Once I stepped in though, to the stares of the "regulars", I immediately found out that they do not serve food. But a couple of kind patrons engaged me and offered a suggestion: the Horton Arms. One of them was obviously very fond of the food there, and that was about all I needed to decide to try them. So I walked there -- and it's a good ways by foot, but then I'm after some good food... Unfortunately, they had finished serving dinner by the time I arrived, about 19:45 (7:45pm). That seems a bit early to me, but what could I do? Answer: return the next evening. So the next evening I arrived in time, and was quickly seated. I perused the menu, which had my usual favorites like Fish and Chips, and Steak and Ale Pie. But there was something on the menu which I'd never had, and it really piqued my curiosity -- a cheese and onion pie. "That can't be all there is," I thought; that's like ALL cheese... isn't that too much cheese?? But British Pubs generally do pie crust so well you could put damn near anything inside it and it would be really lovely. So I was a bit torn. The waitress arrived. I was explaining to her how I was trying to decide amongst my options, the cheese and onion pie being one of them, when she told me that the c&o pie was really nice... and that's all it took. When else will I have the chance to try this? -- and from a highly recommended pub too. Decided. The result? OMG! That was so good! See the accompanying picture I took. Just incredible. And the cheese was not overpowering. Now where am I going to find THAT over here (U.S.) when I crave it?? Especially in Minnesota!? (Probably nowhere...) Looking at all the different dishes that went by me while I was waiting for my slice of deliciousness, I can pretty well bet that anything you order here will be a delight. This as an absolutely charming pub, it's the oldest public house in England and a level II…read morehistorical building. And is stated to have been built around 1622. There is a decent amount of parking available, there is a fee to park. You can pay by the hour or it is is £3 to park for 24 hours. After you've paid to park show the bartender your ticket and they will give you a discount off of your round. Make sure to take the ticket back to your car and place it on your dash board. This establishment is part of the JW Lee Brewery pubs. But unlike other JW Lee pubs, This pub doesn't serve the typical Lee's menu of fast serve foods. The pub manager Louise is a chef and has created a menu full of delicious items and served in very generous portions. On Sundays they have a traditional carvery dinner buffet. There is a very long history associated with this pub and I highly recommend a walk around to view the various rooms and pictures on the wall. There are multiple rooms available to book for private events as well as a lovely outdoor area. The staff are all very warm and friendly and always smiling. And the prices are good.

Great night here for bf's birthday…read more We started in the downstairs pub area and bf tried some of the ale brewed in the basement, which he said was very good. The bar staff and manager were really friendly and also nice to each other, which gave an overall very positive impression of how the Clarence is run. Upstairs in the attractive restaurant area we were seated by the window and were quickly approached for our drinks order by the server who was brilliant throughout the meal. She was very pleasant and efficient and gave me helpful advice on what to order. We started with the generous-sized black pudding and leek croquettes with a pear and porter sauce which bf loved. Next up I had the roe deer and bf had strip steak. Bf extremely happy with the steak and also commented that the chips were "American standard." I ate most of his perfectly cooked greens. My own dish was really interesting - it was cooked perfectly and also featured a little pie which I was not expecting! The menu has many good points. It's varied both in type of dish and price, so you can come for a special occasion or weekday dinner. It features local elements like the Bury black pudding. It has a good range of steaks. And it has more unusual dishes like the roe deer, venison in my experience being comparatively rare on Manchester menus. Drinks-wise, we enjoyed the light Sauvignon Blanc rose and some kind of delicious port-like dessert wine which was basically like drinking raisins without the plastic aftertaste. Unfortunately we did not get to sample the cocktail bar as it is only open Fridays and Saturdays but bf says it is v nice and if you dine you can normally get in for drinks, even though it's otherwise members only (£250 a year). Will have to return for that, and also for the great-sounding Sunday lunch! Overall well worth a little excursion to Bury and a no-brainer if you're in the area. Only word of caution is that there may not be a lot of choice for vegetarians, so check menu on website before you go.

Downstairs is a traditional pub and a few tables. I can imagine it gets very busy at the weekend. The restaurant, upstairs, is lovely and very large. After looking at the menu, it was clear that the sunday roast was going to be the winner, so i opted for the beef Sunday roast with yorkshire pudding and all the veg! We also ordered cauliflower cheese on the side as an extra. Overall i couldn't fault the meal. It was excellent and the service was impeccable too!
