Interesting place. It's definitely a refinished old building. It's an historical landmark actually. Stayed here during a snowstorm and while I wouldn't normally, I ate dinner at the hotel. My food was pretty good. Nothing to write home about but others around were complaining and I had none. Pool and hot tub area was nice and big. May not be back but I don't tend to try to accumulate Choice hotel points. I would go if my kids were with me just for the pool area. Front desk staff was amazing! read more

First of all, this is absolutely not a four-star hotel. More like a two star. There are no irons or ironing boards in any of the rooms, and when I called down to the front desk to inquire about having one delivered to the room, I was told that I could come pick it up at the front desk. The person on the phone told me "I guess I could bring it up in 15 minutes". When attempting to check out, there was no one at the front desk. I called the hotel and think I woke up the person that I had previously talked to you about the iron. She couldn't be bothered to help me check out but told me someone should be at the front desk "at seven". I needed to leave, so dropped my keys in the box and won't be back! read more

We visited The Highlander for the first time on my 40th birthday. I had been wanting to try this place for months. We pulled into the parking lot and my first impression was that it looked a bit tired. That didn't deter me though. We walked into the hotel and there was a hostess almost immediately to the left of the entryway who took us into the dining room for dinner. The dining room is decorated in purple and black and I somehow got the memo to wear my Prince shirt. :) I loved the photography on the walls from back in the day. There was only one other couple dining when we sat down, so I was a little worried. Service was slow to start but it ended well. Our waiter was pulling triple duty while also acting as bartender and trainer. My drink about knocked my socks off. I'm pretty sure it was straight bourbon. The onion rings were yummy and my swordfish was pretty decent. It was prime rib night, but we didn't partake. All entrees come with a salad and bread basket, By the time dinner was over the dining room was moderately full. Lots of couples aged 70+. From dinner we headed to the arcade where some live music was starting. We stayed for a little while to play games and have another drink. I recommend the strawberry-like cocktail - Foxy Lady maybe. Numerous arcade games were out of order, but Zoltar and Skee-ball there and made up for it. The sunken bar is really neat. I love that the new owners kept it. We headed out around 8:30 but not before checking out the pool area. We couldn't access the pool because we weren't staying at the hotel, but got the gist through the window. A fun place to try! I attended my first event at The Highlander Hotel last week! The Community Foundation of Johnson County held its annual Community Celebration here. Things to know: - Parking is a non issue! - The space is pretty and spacious. I love the chandalieres! - Food was delicious! From the flatbreads to the meatballs. No complaints! I was insanely surprised. - Staff wasn't plentiful or super knowledgable but was kind. As an event planner professionally, a few things really stuck out to me. The program started and there was music playing from the sound system. The speaker on stage asked very kindly if they could turn that off but it took far too many requests for it to happen. I think they were fifteen minutes into the program! Additionally, you could tell the venue's event planner didn't test microphones or really look at what the lighting was like on stage. The microphones were too quiet and the lights on stage were right in people's eyes. These things were very noticable as a guest at the event. I felt so terribly that the folks putting on this super well planned program were set up for failure by this missteps by the venue. Overall, I love the vibe of The Highlander Hotel. I am so glad they renovated it! And again, I can't say enough good things about the food! read more

Priceline bamboozled us with this hotel and gave us a deal on a "4 star hotel", this is not a 4 star hotel. We are a married couple with a dog. This hotel would likely appeal to a family with small children as it has a large swimming pool and arcade. The location of the hotel is hidden amongst a few businesses and doctor offices. The rooms felt very worn and not super clean. I didn't walk around barefoot. If you are trying to get some peace and quiet, do not get a pool view room... you will hear everything. read more

I booked and paid for my room in full through Booking.com, yet I was charged a second time by the Highlander. Despite multiple calls and emails, the duplicate charge still hasn't been reversed. Our first time visiting Iowa for our teen's sports competition at Xtreme Arena. We stayed four days at this hipster vibe hotel, along with two other families from our training center. Appreciated all the fun and retro decor throughout the hotel and room. Loved supporting the community revival and a non-chain hotel. The Supper Club was great! The teens loved the arcade with LOTS of fun game options and a throwback for us adults: a Zoltar Fortune Teller machine! I was bummed that the online hotel menu with unique dishes like asian street tacos and buddha curry bowls was no longer offered due to a kitchen change. But appreciated the daily hot breakfast & yogurt parfait bar offered to guests and 24/7 coffee & tea self-serve. We received excellent service from every staff member we encountered, including manager Kaitlyn, Dylan with reservations, Joe with check-in, Quinn overnight, Susan for local recs, and Hope!! A BIG shout to manager Kaitlyn! Our initial 2nd floor room was on the freeway side and louder at night, so she immediately helped us switch the next morning into 2nd floor double queen courtyard room with a beautiful view (see pics) of the indoor pool and the outdoor giant chess set. Our kids enjoyed playing with that, too. Kaitlyn helped with our late check-out request due to the competition running longer and offered to have our starving teen's lunch delivered to our room so we could finish packing and catch our flight home. Kaitlyn and Susan personally came to bring up the delicious pizza and a milkshake to my happy teen! Our friend needed a hair straightener, my teen forgot her ear plugs, and I also forgot a toiletry - the staff provided all of these. Thank you for our memorable stay and going out of your way to be kind & provide above & beyond 5-star customer service. You can tell the staff took pride in their jobs and did them with a positive attitude. You don't see that too much these days. Disappointing. Fathers' Day Sunday brunch with an underwhelming turnout. Except for some nice rare beef, the food was bland, unseasoned, and mediocre, atmosphere was depressing, server was nice but undertrained, and the buffet staff was uninformed. At one time, I worked a champagne Sunday brunch at a large Chicago hotel. We transformed a huge lounge from a sitting room into a brunch buffet, and then broke it back down again at the end of the day on Sunday. Food, service, and atmosphere were excellent. It took a lot of work to make it happen. Because of their previous success and long experience, I had hoped for better from the former proprietors of IRP. But the enterprise lacks quality and needs imagination, enthusiasm, attention to detail, and plain old elbow grease to fill the room with guests. read more

This hotel is quirky and fun. A great value if going on a football weekend. Rather than door key cards, you're given a wristband similar to what festival's do nowadays - great for kids so they always have their key. There is a pool and hot tub. Free breakfast was pretty decent! They have 24 hour coffee available, but if you're a coffee snob like me it's just mediocre. There are a couple bars and a video gaming area that we enjoyed. They even had some live music and the bar chairs are on wheels which is a riot. Rooms are modest, but get the job done - there not anything special about the 2 room suite, it's just adjoining rooms and can be more of an inconvenience since you have to all check in/out at the same time. Some rooms had fridges, ours didn't. Rooms do not have dressers. Walls are pretty thin, you will hear your neighbors. Parking is free. We had some trouble with billing and were double- charged. I'd recommend booking directly rather than via a 3rd party site. All in all, we found this to be a good value and we enjoyed the uniqueness of the hotel. Staff is lovely! This hotel and restaurant attached were long established and just recently purchased to help them remain part of the community. I'm sure the intentions were good, but our experiences with each were lacking. The hotel room had a propped-up mirror that left the wall scratched, an AC unit way to close to bed to blow into the occupant's face, the tub needed refinishing, and the room was sparing furnished for the price. To be fair, we were told restaurant had just re-opened that evening, but could have used more fine turning. A few more 'cold openings' maybe? My main dish was one of the richest Pasta Primaveras I've ever had. It was smothered in a heavy sauce, contradicting the intent of fresh veggies and pasta. The Calamari was an array of deep fried 'strings'. I never had anything like it. The wings order was more expected of bar; not a 'high end' dining room. The rest of the experience within both - cordiality and customer service - will hopefully be resolved with much more time and training. Try it in a couple of months. read more

Lots of good...but this hotel has fallen into disrepair externally and in various ways internally. It felt strangely vacant and rather than attracting the claimed hip modern crowd, it seems to attract a crowd that wants to stay at a place that is called hip...but are more bargain hunters than hip. The exterior is needing tons of TLC, with lots of weeds, broken pavement with grass coming through, unmaintained surfaces, etc (see pictures). When you walk in, it is a cool but strange vibe, with the check-in area feeling like it is setup on temporary tables. The pool ceiling has missing and damaged tiles, the bathroom floors were painted black and are now peeling with white showing, the hotel clearly is old and has had a newish veneer added. There is much to love, but the execution is all strange. It feels like it was excitedly created a few years ago, then forgotten by ownership and run with well meaning employees that lack the original vision and care and drive for excellence. The arcade area is a nice treat with a couple pool tables and games that we enjoyed. The EV charger in front was very handy. read more

Enjoyed a weekend staycation in this super groovy upcoming destination! Loved the entire vibe of the place & the staff was great! We briefly met the hotel owner & one of the team members who gave us a really awesome backstory & brief history of the location. From the brass lamps / candles at the bar, to the black and white decor table under the tv, to the floor lamps (which I loveeee!)! Needless to say, it's an awesome comeback story! The owner is a hands on, works with her team in all areas of the facility (we saw her working from afar before we even knew who she was) kind, and creative individual who is shattering a glass ceiling! Both the daytime and night team members were all so very kind and seemed to genuinely enjoy being there. Definitely give this place a go, even for a staycation! Called hotel to confirm amenities-booked hotel on choice hotels.com (the hotel's direct website). Arrived 15 minutes later-room was dirty (stain on pillow case, very smoky & dirty), and didn't have an outside pool as the front desk, Cheridan, said they had-why chosen. Asked to be checked out with full refund (all within 15 minutes of arrival) and she Cheridan said 100% no problem. She worked w/manager Drew over text to cancel the room. I got an email saying it was cancelled without any fees. I asked for a receipt showing the refund she said she couldn't do it but she would work with Drew to get that to me ASAP or next morning. 2pm the next day nothing. Called repeatedly-no answer; left messages. Called choice.com directly & was told the cancelation number they gave me was invalid $ hotel never cancelled room. Advised to turn around and go back to the hotel (I was 30 minutes away). Cheridan & another manager were at the front desk. They had me take photos of their computer screen showing it was cancelled & no charges made. I also had them write and sign on their letter head it was cancelled, 100% NC. They said they had nothing to refund because their was no charge. My CC was charged . Left more messages for Drew, the manager, told he'll call asap and has not. Choicehotels.com says they can't fix this because the properties are independently owned at that the Highlander lied to me that they cancelled it and they have nothing to refund. Upon now reading other BBB reports, I've learned this is a repeated practice for this hotel. They are a fraud-charging guests for hotel stay that never happened & promising refunds they don't give. I wanted a refund ASAP. Choice hotels is also at fault-this is their property, they admit their property lies to me & take no responsibility to helping me. I have filed a complaint with choicehotels.com, no reply. I hope the BBB, attorney general, etc. does something to hold the Highlander accountable since I am not the only victim. read more

The restaurant was a huge let down. Overpriced and honestly not good. I left feeling frustrated.

They've been having brunch for a few weekends, but they seem to still be ironing out all of the bugs. They were scheduled to open at 10am, but ended up running about 10-15 minutes late (lobby got a little crowded), but still acceptable. The layout of the food was very odd. You would see condiments such as cream cheese next to waffles, and bagels located on different tables and the syrup no where near the waffles. They ran out of bacon and after waiting for about 10 minutes, I asked the hostess if she could let me know when they had more (which she did and even offered to bring to me) but it was another 10 or 15 minutes. The food was pretty good -- eggs, macaroni/cheeses, ham and prime rib -- as well as some delicious desserts. I think they may be stretched a little thin on help (like other restaurants) as we waited a long time to get drink orders taken. My suggestion would be to take advantage of the room they have, corners, etc. and separate the 'style' of foods like they did in the old IRP: desserts in one section, bagels/waffles in another part, etc. It might alleviate the long lines standing/waiting in the middle of the room. read more

Renovations are nice. Staff is friendly. When you find the staff. Thought it was strange to see staff constantly push dirty pool water back into the pool every 5-10 minutes. But maybe that's not as unsanitary as it seems. My biggest concern was the fact that the hand soap and shampoo in the bathroom is shared from guest to guest. In every hotel I have ever stayed at, I've gotten small shampoo bottles. And the Highlander, you get big bottles that are shared guest to guest. Extremely unsanitary due to the fact that it just takes one gross guest to do something to that bottle of shampoo or hand soap. read more

We arrived for our Easter Brunch reservation after an hour drive to be met by a packed lobby area with people waiting who said they had reservations and had already waited more than an hour. This is supposedly an experienced manager from the former Iowa River Power Company. What were they thinking? You don't treat your customers like this or you will undoubtedly lose business. My travel and need for a room in Iowa City was due to an appointment at the University hospital that required an overnight stay, it was to rest and relax in a stressful situation. I called on Tuesday, June 18th to request early check in at noon and agreed to pay $25 per hour for early access (shocked by this, as I have stayed all over the world in hotels ranging from convenience to luxury and have never been asked to do this). Unfortunately, when I arrived just before noon on June 19th I was greeted by an empty reception desk and had to find someone to process my check in. I pressed the call button for assistance and eventually a staff member responded. When I told him I was there for check in, he said that it was unlikely since guest checkout was at 11 am and early check ins were not allowed until 2 pm, which is what he said was noted on my reservation and elaborated to say he remembered talking to me earlier in the day, which was a lie, I had called the day before and spoken with a female to make the early check in arrangements. He then proceeded to make excuses of new staff, poor training on policy knowledge, etc. So, as guest relations agent scrambled to find me a clean room to sleep in, I went to use the common area bathroom which was below expectation for the accommodations on the website. The seat on which I sat, nearly dumped me onto the bathroom floor and my experience with your hotel only got worse from there. When I returned from the restroom, I noticed heavily pooled water in the reception area floor which was not marked with any CAUTION wet floor signage and pointed it out to staff member as well as making him aware of the broken toilet seat. After which, the guest agent said "we have just mopped" but made no attempt to put signage up, and then told me he would make sure to get toilet repaired, he also said he was removing the early access charges from my bill as a concession for my already poor experience. We were finally given wristbands and instructions to find our room. Moving on to the rest of our experience: My granddaughters were eager to swim but we were not able to open our poolside slider to access the pool and had to call guest services for assistance. The woman who came to assist also struggled but was finally able to get it for us from the pool side. Odd that door does not overlock from the inside but does from the outside, this made me feel very insecure in a room with my two young granddaughters! The swimming pool area is very unsafe with slippery tile surrounding the entire pool area, generally, there is slip resistant tile as to mitigate slips and falls. The "hot tub" temperature was less hot than a normal warm bath. The swimming pool area was obviously without daily cleaning and it was not clear for how many days. There were several wet towels strewn about on the furniture, glassware sitting poolside, and debris in the pool including a towel all of which my grandchildren retrieved and removed from the pool (they saw this as a diving game, I saw this as unacceptable). The pool area went unclean for the entirety of our stay. We still tried to make the best of a bad situation by retrieving board games from the reception area, none of which were complete with pieces or instructions. We visited the arcade, where we found 20% of all equipment was not powered on so I assumed in some state of disrepair, as such, we chose not to purchase tokens and take our chances with any games that were powered on. Signs were posted that outside food & beverage were not allowed to be consumed outside of our rooms, but we saw no sign of staff to prepare food or sell beverages to us (there was a bartender sitting on a cooler in the arcade bar who was less than engaged with serving anything to anyone & seemed annoyed when we inquired about game tokens). The poolside snack shack/bar, dining room, and reception area bar were unstaffed the entirety of our stay. To end the night, my eldest granddaughter showered and to our disgust the drain was clogged and the tub began to fill. I called the guest services number with no answer, was redirected to leave voicemail, waited for some time with no response so went to walk the empty halls of the hotel in search of assistance. Found someone who said it was likely user error, as he thought I may not know how to pull a plug to drain a tub (laughable) so he came to the room to pull it for us, after he failed to raise an already raised plug, he agreed it must be clogged but only offered his assistance to use "drano" which would make the tub further inoperable, or move us to another room as maintenance would not be available until morning. I declined both of these options as I feared a new room may give us new unacceptable issues, as as such I dismissed him so we could sleep off our stressful day and stay in your overhyped underwhelming establishment. The Highlander Hotel is advertised as "Urban Oasis", which is far from truth. Please use caution! read more

There is nothing about this that is a supper club, the staff is not trained to be upper level sophistication at all, the menu is not attractive, and only had such minimal options, truly disliked the hard flooring the cheap chairs with wedding covers on them and the bright lighting There was nothing about this that gave us an old supper club feel so disappointed in the sunken bar now being an arcade rather than the ambience of a classy bar we decided not to eat and our drinks and my husband was charged $20 for a drink that was not even top shelf Won't be back , so disappointing. We had a great experience! The room was everything we needed and only about 10 minutes from the downtown area. We were passing through Iowa City and found this place by chance on Hotels.com and were pleasantly surprised. It's probably one of the best remodeled hotels I've stayed at. The rooms are spacious with a complimentary drink upon arrival. The pool, hot tub, and entertainment area would be great for a family get together or a group of friends! We've got a few more trips to make through and will most likely be back. Good buffet style breakfast and lots of room to roam around! Love it! read more

First of all, this hotel is always under construction. They have a new owner who decided not to put telephones in the rooms. They say use your cellphone. What if my cell tower goes down? What if I don't have a cellphone? I tried calling the front desk on my cellphone, the call was never answered despite trying several times. Don't have a heart attack here or need security. I complained to the desk clerk who said the new owner wanted to reduce costs. Also there are no room safes. Anyone who stays here is stupid. read more

I felt like I didn't want anything to touch the floor. Virtually unstaffed. I read on other reviews You're supposed to text what you need - but what number? We weren't given any info at check-in (when we had to track down someone to check us in.) In the morning the same ONE staff member seemed to be doing every job there. At one point I saw 3 different parties pacing the lobby in confusion trying to find someone to help them check out. The listing states - breakfast made to order - UNTRUE. The breakfast was very limited - just yogurt cups or oatmeal. And again - same (no) staff if you need anything else. We needed milk - not flavored creamer - how difficult is it to put milk out at a scarce breakfast buffet? The FLIES - thankfully they weren't on our room. But they were EVERYWHERE. So many flies. The one staff person was actually walking around with a fly swatter. Remember when I said it didn't feel clean? The fly situation was pretty gross. We paid 300.00 for a room on the pool. We were having a child's birthday party with family. I was followed to my room by a Staff member to ask about my drinks. I said I know I can't have glass by the pool I will put it in a cup. He said cool, okay. We are sitting at our table by the pool and a woman comes up saying we can't drink or eat anything unless it is purchased from them. So they don't care about the food and drinks IF you pay them to supply it. What a joke. All you can eat and drink in your room step outside your food one foot and boom you get reprimanded. Not as fun as before the remodel. It was 80.00 a night and had great little deck areas per room. Now it's just for making money not memories. We won't be going back. Which is sad used to be a great spot for family fun. read more

I wasn't sure what to expect in Iowa but I must say I was pleasantly surprised and it all started with check-in at The Highlander. The staff is super friendly and accomodating. They went the extra mile to ensure my husband and I were comfortable. There were 2 things that were a little lacking for me which kept me from giving this place 5 stars. The first was the bar drinks, they were terrible. I had 2 the lemon drop and all I tasted was Realemon then I tried a Mai Tai..both went down my bathroom drain along with the $20 they cost. The second is my room had all the furnishings shown online but no wooden floor, it was a carpet. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't a wood floor like the photos. I like to end on a good note so here it goes, the general manager gave us a history lesson on The Highlander which was pretty cool. Check out the Signature Room, chock full of history. Also, it is a locally owned, woman owned hotel. I am certain we will be back. read more

We stayed at the Highlander on a football Saturday. This is a great spot for Hawkeye parents to stay when visiting...easily accessible from campus, downtown, and restaurants/nightlife. The owner is obviously passionate about her hotel and customer service. If fact, when they didn't have the tea my wife prefers at their nice breakfast spread, the owner herself insisted on running out to get some! Above and beyond. Also looks like a great place for young families as there is a very nicely done indoor pool area. I would suggest that if you don't plan on using the pool to ask for a room that does not abut the pool area. Good value and eclectic, fun decoration scheme. Certainly not your run of the mill corporate hotel, and that's a good thing! read more

The Highlander is very nice, I think it used to be a school at some point. The here rooms are super interesting and set a good vibe, we even got a record player and some of my favorite albums to listen to for the night. My only complaints would be that the food is extremely expensive and we spent 30 extra dollars on a balcony that we thought would be outside, but instead was inside facing the pool. Just stayed there last night. If you are ever in Iowa City, let me recommend to you the Highlander Hotel. Built in 1967, it has hosted such luminaries as Mickey Mantle and Joan Baez. The inside is renovated to echo the 1960s vibe, with the outside still to be done. Among the wonderful amenities and fun features? You can check out a record player and LPs of the era (think Bobby Darrin and The Band) for your listening pleasure. Super friendly staff and (drum roll) pets are welcome. On our long car ride from the West Coast to the East Coast, this stay has been a highlight. read more
