Well we continue on our testing of the pubs and restaurants near our new home in Clayton Le Woods. I had actually been to the Hospital pub a couple of times over the last few years as I have a customer nearby. We decided to try them for Sunday lunch last weekend. We arrived to a full car park which is always a good start. It was busy inside but a couple of table free in the link area between the bar and games room. They had a good selection of real ales so we got a couple of drinks and set the tab going. The food did smell very good and we decided on roast beef. The deal is you have to order at the bar - which personally I don't care for but its not a huge issue more of a personal preference. The roast beef came with Yorkshire pudding , roast and new spuds, carrots and cabbage. All this for £8.95 each.
I thought its a bit cheap - about 4 quid cheaper than our lovely local which we left behind.
When the waitress brought the meals I could see why - Yorkshire pud - frozen Aunt Bessie style , roast spuds were not roast but deep fried , beef - mine was OK but Sharon's was as tough as old boots. At least the veggies were fresh and well cooked.
When we got the usual is everything OK I said not so much and mentioned the beef , the waitress brought a steak knife but to to avail - the beef wasn't having it.
Now fair play to them here - they knocked the price of Sharon's meal of the bill without being asked. The thing is you cant make up for the disappointment of the Sunday lunch being ruined , especially as we nearly decided to stay home and go for a curry at night.
We will try them once more and just stay away from the roast dinner - after all they were packed with what were obviously return customers. read more
