What looks like an Ice Cream, isn't an Ice Cream, and is better experienced on a cold windy day,…read morethan a sunny one? That's right! A Pies Cream. Now I wandered past this stall at the waterfront and had to get one. The whole concept weirded me out a bit. This was further exaggerated by the van being parked next to a real Ice Cream van. It just felt a bit you know - wrong! A Pies Cream is constructed with a large pastry cone, the filling of your choice being spooned into the bottom and a swirl of mashed potato topping it all off. You can then choose to have extra gravy and onion crisps on top if it takes your fancy. It took me a while to decide but I went for a 'Chook-a-leekie' with chicken, onion and leeks. There is also a steak pie and some lovely-looking veggie options which included butter beans, sweet potato and halloumi cheese. Now don't get me wrong, I enjoyed my pie but I couldn't help feeling it was a little bit cold and bland. I can't help loving a pie with all the yummy goodness baked inside and it being steaming hot when you cut into it. I'm sure these guys will smash it at festivals due to the Pies Cream's easy-eating nature. However in a city with a big pie following and reputation, at £4.95 for a plain one or £5.50 with the extras, the Pies Cream is more of a novelty treat than a serious dinner choice. The service was friendly but incredibly slow, probably the reason I found my food to be tepid, however it was only their first day of trading so I'm sure things will improve. So if you see these guys around the place, give them a go. In fact, you may not be able to resist eating the very strange shaped pie or if you prefer - the very strange tasting ice cream, but that's just it. You'll be paying for the look of it, rather than the taste so I doubt you'll be going back for a second one.

When I saw this at the Bristol Christmas Market I could help but smile. What a great idea, a pie…read moreserved like an ice cream! I opted for the 'Lambykins' (not sure about the name!), which was lamb, mint and pumpkin and it was pretty bluddy good for the most part. I'll elaborate on 'for the most part' and say the filling was fantastic and generous, but I think that the pastry wasn't as quite as good as the fierce local competition (Pieminister, Tom's, etc). I imagine that this is to some end necessary, as the pastry probably needs to be a bit thicker and drier than a standard pie to hold together in it's cone shape without falling apart, but I think it needs improving if they really want to compete. Like the previous writer I think they'll probably do really well at festivals and events. I like a good pie and this was nearly a very 'good pie', but it was just short of the mark for me. 4/5
