My wife, parents, and I went here to celebrate our wedding and had an absolutely amazing dinner. The staff was so kind and made us feel welcome from the moment we came in. Every dish felt curated and intentional. We started with the crab dip and corn bread and both were delicious. The Miso butter that comes with the cornbread gave it such a pleasant Umami note. For dinner we had the Chicken, Scallops, Pork Chop, and Shrimp and Grits. The carrot puree that held the scallops was so smooth, sweet, and rich. It complimented the scallops perfectly. My shrimp and grits were fantastic. The grits were the perfect texture, and the shrimp cooked to perfection. The bone in pork chop was perfectly cooked, was seasoned so well, and extremely tender and juicy. I think I was most impressed with the chicken, sweet potatoes, and bacon jam. It's hard to explain but the bourbon bacon jam almost tasted like how it smells when they smoke a cocktail, in the best way. The sweet potatoes tasted incredible and balanced out the savory chicken. I really can't recommend this resteraunt enough. From the food, to the service and the ambiance, everything was fantastic. I've dined at a handful of Michelin starred resteraunts and the overall quality and completion of the dishes here easily competes and surpasses those experiences. First time at the Independent. Started with the she crab soup. It was very good. Good amount of crab in the soup and the broth was very smooth. For the main I decided to go with the scallops. They were cooked well but could have been seasoned a bit more but still good. One item of note is that the scallops meal is a bit light so if you are really hungry, get a side item or maybe something else. The service was really good. She provided suggestions, checked on us often and was very knowledgeable. A good experience overall. read more

We went here for our 20 year anniversary! The Independent is inside of a stunning hotel in Georgetown. We started with the smoked shrimp, and honestly were pretty disappointed. While the flavor was there, the shrimp themselves were mushy. It was hard to get past the texture. We also got the cheese grits and they were yummy! My niece has eaten here before and she told me to get the scallops. I'm glad I did, because THOSE were excellent! Cooked to perfection and tasted very fresh! I'd love to come back at some point to try more of the food, but there really weren't a lot of gluten free options for me. Hopefully that changes over time. We'd definitely come back still, and I do think it's a great little restaurant to checkout. Again, the scallops are definitely worth a try and I highly recommend those! read more

Not sure what I was expecting, but they were good! Wifey ordered the scallop entree and I ordered a filet with blackened shrimp! The scallops were delish and cooked to perfection! The filet was cooked perfectly and was so tender! We split a side of Brussel Sprouts and were unbelievably good!! We caved in and ordered dessert! Ambiance is delightful. Service is excellent. Food is amazing. My mother and I came up again this year from Charleston to spend the night at The George and have Thanksgiving dinner at The Independent. It was much busier this year than last year. We made our reservation at six o'clock, thinking that was early. But they began serving at noon, so were running low on food. The portions were a lot smaller this year, and they had completely run out of the chocolate pecan bourbon pie. Our waiter Zeke was excellent. We shall come earlier next year! read more

Went for the first time tonight and will definitely return -- have been going to Chive Blossom for our nicer dining needs near Litchfield for years and years but The Independent definitely is in the mix now. Service was friendly and prompt, the ambiance is really pretty with marble tables and some pretty cool large light fixtures l. It definitely was getting loud by the time we left around 8:15 but I could still hear my wife across the table just fine. As to the food we shared the broccolini and the crab fingers to start -- both were delicious and I especially loved the breaded crab claws with the tasty remoulade. For my main I got the cornmeal crusted flounder and it was excellent (though the seafood stew under it was mostly under-seasoned tomatoes and turnips that were just ok) and my wife got the crab cakes with sea island red peas which were delicious. For dessert I got the hummingbird cake which was really sweet but tasty and my wife got the key lime pie which was topped with a huge dollop of meringue that a server brûlées table-side. Wonderful upscale restaurant in historic Georgetown , South Carolina . Visiting here from Los Angeles , Ca and I saw this place as my cousin drove me around to see this historic town . Everything was amazing from the apps we shared , charcuterie board , crab bisque , Caesar salad ( small but great ) I had the shrimp as my main , phenomenal , my aunt had the filet , and my cousin had the fish special . Let's start with the one negative! I called (twice) and left messages to reserve 2 seats at the bar for 6pm 48 hours prior to visiting. When we arrived told you can't reserve seats at the bar. It would've been nice if I received a call advising me. Common curiosity? SERVICE: Frankie, our bartender made excellent drinks (3 mixed one glass of wine) and provided great service.She knew the menu and was very helpful. 5 stars FOOD I had the fruit salad! Outstanding! Last minute visit to Georgetown with my son yesterday. We had not been there for over a year. The plan was to go to a new restaurant on Front street. It was Monday and most of the restaurants were closed including the restaurant we had planned on having dinner at. The Independent was one of the few restaurants that was open. We had never heard of it before but we were thrilled something was open. Very happy the other place was closed. The restaurant is located on the ground floor of the new George inn and like the inn the restaurant has a fresh clean modern look. I ordered the pork belly for my appetizer. It came on a bed of grits with collard greens mixed in. The pork belly was delicious but the star was the grits. I have never tasted grits like this, just delicious and different. For my main I had the chicken which was perfect and with a delightful sauce. My son ordered the Valentine's day special which they had extended. He chose the romaine lettuce salad as his appetizer and the steak as his main dish. It was served with an amazing sauce and also came with carrots and spinach, and he also ordered an extra side of brussel sprouts which were phenomenal. The service was attentive and elegant. We love Georgetown, SC! It's the quintessential charming town of coastal South Carolina. And as liveaboards, we especially love good restaurants within walking distance of our boat. The Independent is located literally steps from Harborwalk Marina in the George Hotel, and offers fine dining at reasonable prices in a beautiful setting. Our family enjoyed meeting up with my parents to form our party of 6, and were able to get a reservation same day with a table next to the window view of downtown. Every dish was delicious with a twist on the typical. We started with the grilled Caesar salad with herbed walnuts and also, deviled eggs with smoked trout roe. Our entrees included scallops with pickled strawberries, crab cakes over red pepper aioli, and duck with roasted brussels. I have to mention the complimentary herb bread that is so good, and our fresh house made mango sorbet -so so refreshing and light, the creamy cre brûlée, and the decadent chocolate ganache cake for dessert. All were shareable and not to be missed! Our waitress, Lovee, was a delight, and very helpful with our selections and my Mother's celiac restrictions. A total disaster, completely ruined the whole experience and showed me the cook, not a chef, has no idea what the customer wants. Its was a very small round dry idea what the cooks thinks is key lime pie, not, covered in a 3 inch tall tower of macaroon. Yuck! This was not key lime pie. A tower of crap. Truly the best dining experience we have had in the last 5+ years. We came with our 4 year old son to celebrate our wedding anniversary. They were so thoughtful and even brought us out a dessert and an anniversary card signed by the whole staff! They were also exceptionally accommodating to my son's gluten allergy and were extremely knowledgeable about their food and ingredients. We made a reservation to meet up with some friends on Sunday and all eight of us fit comfortably at a pair of tables. My entrée was the crab cake eggs benedict. Superb. Chef Thomas has created a menu unlike anything else in the area, and it's especially fun to watch him and his team craft each dish in the open kitchen. To start, the BBQ carrots became an unexpected favorite at the table along with the burrata board, and crab dip which was on special. The flat iron meal was paired perfectly with Brussel sprouts, a vegetable I typically don't eat but ate every bite of, and the best sweet potato au gratin I've ever had. We especially appreciated the time and effort our server, Kim, took to make our evening special and ensure we had everything we needed to enjoy our meal.
