Visited Ottawa for work and went to The Keg twice during my 3 day work trip. Service was amazing. Food is no frills yet perfectly seasoned. I live in NYC and a ton of places are overhyped. Pay $$$$$ for mediocre. This place on the other hand was rock solid. Peppercorn steak Chicago style was fire AF. Would fly back just for that! This Keg is located in the heart of downtown at the byword market in Ottawa. They do have an outdoor patio as well! Inside, you got your typical mood lighting to set the ambiance for a intimate dinner. Onto the food, baked Brie- very tasty the cheese comes piping warn, the basil pesto is delicious and jelly is a good pairing with a bit if a kick. It balanced the pesto. Teriyaki Sirloin- was a hit. The flavour was impeccable. The juice was oozing from the steak (medium rare). It paired really well with the mashed potatoes. My dad got the filet mignon with an additional shrimp and scallop, and I got the lobster tail dinner and we both shared to make our own surf and turf! The food was good, the texture was tender and not chewy, and it was especially tasty with the melted butter. The ambiance was nice as we were seated on the patio and the service was great! Maybe they were having a really bad night. It took well over an hour for our order to arrive. The crab cakes were awful. Way too salty, with other excessive spices. The prime rib sandwich was just sort of a poor beef dip, don't know why the sliced beef needed to be so overcooked, and oversoaked; the baguette was sort of an inedible mess. They ran out of the burrata cheese (?). The one success was the filet mignon. Perfectly cooked, happily shared by several people who ended up wanting more. Funny enough, the food is ok. It's like the fast food of steak. Back when they first opened, they were aiming to be a high-end restaurant. They almost succeeded, but competition was too fierce. I think they actually saved their business by targeting the general public. It was still a pricy-ish place to go, but it filled the need for a nicer restaurant for the masses. Today, we can find them busy and still serving good food. Indeed, a few of their offerings are scrumptious. The steak -- dependeding on where you go, you get hit and misses on appropriate cook times for how you want your steak. That's human error and easily fixed. You find better steak handlers. Service is good, but when they're busy, you sometimes have to wait. Otherwise, you get cheerful servers and at times get great veteran servers who add to the ambiance of your meal. While in Ottawa visiting family I took a much needed break away and decided to treat myself to a solo dinner out. I stopped in at The Keg in the Market and was comforted with a familiar menu and predictable food. As usual, I sat at the wood. My bartender was a lovely gal, whose name I forget. While I could see she was VERY busy, she didn't lack in great service. Super friendly and made some killer cocktails! I went for my go-to Peppercorn Striploin with a twice baked potato. The steak was perfectly medium rare, and the veggies were crisp and cooked just right. Where the meal really shined was the cocktails. The Keg Old Fashion is a house staple that never disappoints, and the Watermelon Cosmo was fresh and not too sweet. The only downfall was a slight mishap with my meal... I requested a starter Caesar Salad that unfortunately came at the same time as my meal. Pretty sure the salad was ready before my steak was, but mistakes happen. While I think this was just a small communication hiccup with support staff, it was very quickly corrected and taken off my bill. No biggie! Overall my experience was great! read more

After taking in the Canada Day festivities earlier this month, I walked around ByWard Market for a couple of hours. My phone rang. I ended up taking the call sitting on a cement stoop at the corner of York and Dalhousie. Hunger pangs took over after my call was over. I needed to fetch some lunch. I looked over to my left and saw The Keg. I hadn't been there in nearly a decade. I used to work by one at Yonge and Eglinton, and loved eating there now and agin, but don't drop by the area much these days. I decided to head over to this restaurant. The patio was open. Since is was a hot, humid, sunny day, and I had spent enough time out in the sun, I opted to sit in the restaurant and enjoy the air conditioning. As with all Keg restaurants, this one was dark. The adjustment took a good fifteen seconds. I had an entire corner to myself. I had to use the women's washroom. It's next to a gorgeous display case of wines. The washroom was clean and classy looking. I came back and my server came over. I ordered a mojito. I was on vacation and felt like it. It was refreshing and hit the spot. My server let me know about a special. I went for it. It was an 8-ounce sirloin steak, with crispy shrimp and scallops, veggies, and smashed, pan-fried potatoes. A sriracha aioli accompanied the dish. Warm sourdough bread came first. I ate most of it. Normally, I have a slice or two. Yep, I was hungry. My meal came. I was thrilled. It was yummy. The sirloin was done medium-well, which was perfect. It was flavourful. The crispy shrimp and scallops were delightful! They were also perfectly done. I liked the veggies and mashed, pan-fried potatoes. The sriracha aioli was creative and worked well. I enjoyed the mild kick to complete the entire dish. For dessert, I went with a mini creme brulee. It was the perfect size. The creme brulee was creamy inside and crunchy on top. Yum! My server was enthusiastic and friendly. I had great a experience. I wish that it wasn't so dark in the restaurant, though. It's like I need to switch my phone's flashlight on to navigate around the restaurant. Very busy and well staffed. We got seated right away and our drinks taken care of swiftly. We ordered our to die for favourite, the fried cauliflower, and it was spot on with the nostalgic mouth watering taste, pure bliss. As well as the biggest surprise ever, unlimited warm bread! It played a great part in our enjoyment of the restaurant, as we had ordered our meals, but mine (Mediterranean Cauliflower) had been called back before it was put out for having the wrong sauce. A bit odd but I was glad to be compensated with a free item, a drink for my younger brother. The floor manager even came to apologize. They gave me the correct order and it was worth the wait! The cucus and pistachio sauce was worth it fully! I love pistachio and it wasn't overpowered or overpowering. It's a lovely light but filling dish, and a wonder to the taste buds. But definitely the cherry on top of the experience at The Keg was our cheery server Kat! Uh...yeah. I've experienced better. This is a restaurant that has a whole lot of versions of strip, sirloin, and filet steaks. They only have one Ribeye a la carte. That's your warning sign right there; a warning which I did not heed. I had the misfortune of ordering this piece of meat which was suspect from the first bite. It's unfortunate, but a chain like the Keg cannot compete with the passion and care that goes into a quality one-off restaurant. The streamlining of the menus, the standardization, the sourcing of the food and the sheer volume detract from the experience. The dinner is likely a little less expensive than a first rate steak joint, but you get what you pay for. I don't even know how to properly say this. I suppose the best description I can give is that it didn't taste like meat. In fact it didn't taste like anything at all. Imagine a completely neutral food. It was well seasoned, but lacked any familiar taste of beef. I ordered it with a couple of lobster tails that were tasty. I wouldn't be surprised if they were frozen earlier that day, but for 20$, it was decent. Mashed potatoes were served piping hot. The caesar salad is simple and the hot sourdough bread is pretty good. Service was excellent and this place is packed to the rafters with the good folks of Ottawa who don't have the greatest selection of restaurants as compared to other cities. I get the appeal. It's simple, salty, and consistent. That said, it is not a serious contender when talking about steakhouses. read more

I have always enjoyed dining at The Keg, it rarely disappoint and this one did not! It was my brother-in-law's first time ever, a NY native. There are plenty of steakhouses in NYC and he was thoroughly impressed by The Keg. First off, love the online reservations system. I even got a phone call to confirm my reservation which is a really nice touch. The table provided had room for us to tuck away a stroller and the highchair wasn't in the way.... excellent! The food came relatively fast. The only thing I would critique is for the server to be a bit more attentive with clearing our bread plates because as soon as the main dishes came, we were very cramped for table space. Between the prime rib to my top sirloin and my parents' lobster tail dinner, all of the meats were cooked to perfection. Only my parents didn't enjoy the mushroom rice that accompanied their lobster tails dinner. I tried it and agreed. The rice was too grainy and bland, even seeing the mushrooms in it, there was no taste. Other than that, all the other sides were great. We also had room to squeeze in desserts. I don't think I ever notice the mini size desserts but it was the perfect size for one or even 2 people. We are trying to check in and the host told us that they can't accommodate us because we have a large group with kids and gave us an option to wait for an hour and half where in theres a lot of tables to sit in they told us also that theres not enough staff to help us. Visited the Keg in Ottawa's Market on Oct 13, 2022 .... Had calamari which arrived hot and tasty served with two dipping sauces. We also had iceberg salad with blue cheese dressing. For the main course My partner had prime rib and lobster. I had the 10 oz prime rib with garlic mash and roasted veggies... everything was cooked the way we asked and we devoured everything. For drinks we had Richard's red and a cosmopolitan. Total $186.00 + tip. Tip... on the machine ... your tipping on-top of the tax. We tried the take out Menu. We ordered ribs and beef tenderloin. They forgot the ribs then I had to wait an extra 20 minutes for them. By the time the ribs were done my steak had been sitting in a takeout container for the extra 20, and was obvious when I got home to a slightly warm steak. The veg we requested was beans etc, we received a soggy nasty tomato with Parmesan cheese. The steak was requested medium and received a rare. This was our favourite resto for our date nights. We will return in store only. I guess this is what to expect from a takeout steak? But if we were in store I could have complained and got my steak back to my preference and a proper vegetable. It was a waste of 80$ because we did not finish our meal. Ribs were good and you can't mess up that twice baked potatoe so not a complete loss. Update: I was contacted by the Manager and taken care of amazingly. With all proper docs to support my claim we were reimbursed for part of the dinner. This was the second time I have been to this location and I was pretty impressed. It was a Tuesday night at 7pm and the restaurant was surprisingly full, so we were subject to a 30-minute wait, but we settled for the patio which had a couple tables left. I found the patio to be very noisy though! Maybe it's the crowd that came last night. Maybe it was the wine... Anyway all three of us enjoyed our drinks meals very much. We were given freshly baked sourdough bread to start, and it was so good. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable, but I found service to be very slow. I was impressed with the service and customer attention at this location. The food arrived in a timely fashion and was good quality and the way we expected. We arrived at this place on a Wednesday evening and while the outside of the restaurant seemed barren and devoid of life around 9pm, the inside was warm and welcoming. We were promptly seated and the server gave us some time with the menu before asking for drinks. Minor issue here, the glass in which my friend's brandy was served had some water drops already. This was fixed and he received a new one quite quickly. We ordered two steak dishes ( 7oz and 8oz), one seas food salad and one calamari appetizer. I was impressed with the size of the dishes since many places skimp on the food and add more flair. The calamari appetizer was great and filling, while the steaks were cooked to our liking. On a side note, our server was well versed in his knowledge of meats, their sources, their pairings and ability to describe coming levels. In fact, he convinced one of us to grab the special because of his excellent describing skills. We arrived late and we're probably the last to leave, however throughout the entire experience, we never felt rushed or pressured. I enjoyed this experience and will return. read more

I was invited by my relatives on a very busy Saturday. They were visiting from Montreal and were travelling with children and grandparents, we were a total of 10 people. Most restaurants were reluctant to accommodate 10 people which included two little girls but The Keg swiftly took us on board and prepped our table. After being seated the waiter promptly came to give us our menus. He gave us enough time to choose of dishes and drinks. He also gave good explanations on dishes and gave good recommendations. The fried calamari entrée was crunchy and tasty, and the top sirloin that I ordered was exactly how I asked it to be cooked. Overall great experience, but in my personal opinion they should improve on the light. I guess the low lights are for 'atmosphere' but a dining experience without really seeing what you are eating isn't that pleasant. Just a little more light would be perf. read more

Due to geography, I only get to a Keg about once a year. This was a great visit. This a wonderful spot in the Market and has survived the test of time. We were lucky to find street parking right away but it is walking distance from so many area hotels too. We had the sweetest server who aimed to please and made experience in the bar/lounge area a fun one. We shared the delicious Mushrooms Neptune to start. They always taste amazing and I love the little rolls and butter served with them. It is a heavier appy so we shared a lobster and steak main. The steak was cooked perfectly rare and the lobster tail was handled so well. No rubberiness here! Worth the $. Had to have the twice baked potato too. Perfect size for sharing. I had my usual Malbec red wine from Argentina and was very pleased with it. He said the beer was served nice and cold (white Belgian). Skipped dessert even though it was hard to pass up a $3 mini brownie with ice cream... next time. The Market is such a great place to walk off your meal afterwards. I visited the Keg Steakhouse this past Monday evening. We had reservations for 4 at 6:30 pm. We were seated in one of their dining rooms and were the only group there. The room did fill up as the evening progressed. The lighting was very dim, and we had to use our cell phones to read the menu. The waiter was nice, but they did screw up the delivery of our meals to the table. Three meals came out, and the 4th person had to wait another 5 minutes before her plate came out. We waited until the 4th meal came out to eat. By that time our meals had cooled. I had the 14 ounce prime rib - medium rare, with asparagus and mushrooms. The prime rib was cooked perfectly and was very tasty. However the whole plate was cool. Overall the food was OK, the service was courteous, but unorganized and confused. I don't normally review mainstream establishments unless they are new, or worth warning other people not to visit - but today I felt like reviewing The Keg, so here we are. We don't usually eat steak very often, but when there is a craving, sadly the only option that we could think of for a steakhouse in Ottawa that delivers a consistently mean steak is The Keg. We've had steak elsewhere in the city (Baton Rouge), but for some reason our visit there hasn't really made enough of an impression for a return trip. Just some quick notes on our last visit to the Keg a few weeks ago. We came around 8PM on a weeknight and we were seated promptly. Our server was friendly, attentive... although a little slow on the service. I ordered the Sirloin Oscar, which came with shrimps, scallops, an 8oz top sirloin (medium) with mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables and bearnaise sauce. I know - sounds delicious right? (Spoiler: it was delicious). My partner got the 10oz prime rib, which came with potatoes, veggies, horseradish and some au jus. He ordered it medium rare, but found it was too rare for him. Staff did not hesitate to take it back and put it on the grill a smidge longer, which was really quite nice of them. The prime rib was a bit too fatty for me, but my sirloin, especially with the seafood and bearnaise sauce, was excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed our meals, and we cleaned out our plates (with satisfaction!) even if it was way too much food. There's really nothing like a hearty steak when you find a particularly carnivorous urge to just eat one. I suggest you don't wait until the next special event - just do it whenever anyway. You won't be disappointed, at least not at the Keg. read more

This is definitely one of the best steakhouses in Ottawa. Probably one of the best restaurants, just in general! That being said, I didn't think it was anything super-memorable, and I've definitely had more amazing steak elsewhere. But that's nothing bad about this place. I'll just say... This was the first steak I had since coming out of my vegetarianism. Of course it was different but I appreciated it all the same :)! With that being said, my review commences! So our reservation was a late one since I finished work not too long before that and I had been coerced into having steak that date night- and we were met with amazing service. The main concern for us was that we wanted to make sure that we weren't a hassle for the kitchen- given they begin to close its doors around 10- but WE MADE IT. I didn't really make the biggest decisions as I let my boyfriend more or less direct me with help from our server- and we both ended up going for the Manhattan steak. BEHOLD! The most steakiest steak flavour to exist! Or so I was told ;) and it was :P aha The wine was amazing though. He had something as did I.. But sadly I don't remember the names :( just that both types were delicious.. I'll have to ask him what the red wine was! We ended up getting a little customized desert plate afterwards with a bit of cheese cake and brownie . Mm... Just too good. All in all I really did enjoy my reintroduction to steak and I wouldn't have spent the occasion with anyone or anywhere else. Much love. read more
