There is always a long wait at the restaurant and for good reason. They have some of the best Chinese food options and the service is efficient and helpful. Some of my favorite dishes include the chicken and fish maw soup, the crispy pork leg, the lamb stew, and the mixed mushroom and chicken stir fry. Their dishes are all reasonably priced and they are so good with so much umami and consistency every time we visit. Definitely a family favorite here. Upon arrival, you're given a number, and they call parties based on table availability for their group size. We waited about 25-30 minutes, which wasn't too bad. Everything I've had here is pretty good, but some of my highlights: - Deep fried mochi pork dumplings have a perfect balance of savory filling to slightly sweet mochi. - Pea sprout dumplings - haven't had these before and was pleasantly surprised but these big fat dumplings full of greens and juicy pieces of shrimp. We came here for dinner and probably waited less than 10 minutes. There were only three of us so that may be why. The seating is honestly tight for small tables (we were squished on the side among the bigger tables). The staff are rushing to and from but they'll help you if you need anything. Just flag them down. We got the fried pork feet and it was crispy and not too salty which I appreciated. We got the Wasabi Chicken and Pork Stomach and the wasabi was so strong my mother started coughing really bad lol. We asked the waiter if we can have them remake it but it seemed to trouble him to do that? He gave us a hot bowl of water and we rinsed off the wasabi as needed. Their food is pretty good. We ordered a variety of dishes so we could compare them to other Cantonese restaurants nearby. The green beans were very good, not too salty or greasy like other restaurants. The minced meat and garlic added to the wonderful flavor. The stir-fried spare ribs were very tasty but not too much meat. It was mostly bones, so I wouldn't order it again. The baked cured pig hock was seasoned perfectly and not too greasy or fat. There was plenty of meat on them bones. The skin was nice and crispy. The dried scallop fried rice with egg whites was pretty good compared to other restaurants. Each grain of rice was cooked perfectly with just the right amount of dried scallops and egg whites. I would order it again. The stir-fried beef with tofu and broccoli was very good. The sauce is slightly sweet and salty but full of flavor. The homemade tofu was fresh and soft. The Peking duck was very good, the skin was crispy, and the meat was moist and flavorful. The buns were fresh and soft. Overall, The Kitchen offers great food, but good luck finding parking. Even though there is a public parking lot next door, not a single space is available. I recommend the Kitchen with just two important notes, both of which are warnings necessitated by positive concerns. We were there last night for dinner. The first is you must have a reservation, made well in advance. They are crowded. Here are two data points to offer a sense. We had a party of eight booked for 5:30pm. They open at 5pm. We arrived a few minutes early. They were already full except for our table at the back and maybe one other. By the time we were done, they were beyond capacity. People were waiting to enter. Another group happened to walk in with us. Their party was incomplete. One husband was on the phone with the missing couple, who had not yet left their house. The wife said something about how they still wanted to sit, because if they did not, they would miss their opportunity. She obviously had been there before. Everyone in the group complied, and they made their way single file to their assigned places. The second is go with a group. This is not a venue intended for a solo diner (and I frequent restaurants as a singleton; so no offense intended). It is not even good for a couple. This is meant for four, at a minimum, and ideally as many as had, eight. The reason is you will be eating family style. Or you should be -- I have been for Chinese food with folks who do not wish to share dishes, and I wonder why they wish for this cuisine, which is not presented with private portions. People complimented my ordering. It was easy. The menu is excellent. It is extensive. Every item was delicious. People commented on all the broths. That is more sensitive taste than I have. Once they mentioned it, I noticed. The broths were good; it just isn't anything I pay attention to. The cucumber salad is a traditional appetizer. Here, it was ten times the quantity I expected, with ten times the garlic (so much my wife thought it was pine nuts). We had two types of tofu, very distinct (the crispy fried version with a creamy interior and the salad with cilantro). We had peking duck, which was generous and moderately priced. We also had an unexpectedly fine fish, with pickled cabbage; I had selected it to avoid issues with a whole fish, which not everyone can handle (the bones, looking at the head). The crab was tasty, and this is about the environment and not the establishment: I fear we have depleted the population and climate change has compounded the problem. The beef, the noodles, the bok choy, there was nothing that was not consumed with gusto. The flavors are traditional Cantonese. If you know the different cuisines that fall within the overall category of "Chinese," this is not the spiciest, so if you are looking for that this is the wrong place. The servers were busy. They were attentive. The atmosphere is festive. Everyone departed feeling no need for anything else for days to come. read more

People started lining up quickly within 30 mins of the opening. We ordered steamed shrimp dumpling, steamed chicken feet w/black bean sauce, Xiao Long Bao, steamed egg yolk lava bun (as dessert) steamed beef ball with dried citrus peel, pea sprouts dumpling, and Ginkgo nuts, tofu skin & pea sprouts in broth. Located on a busy stretch of El Camino Real in the heart of Millbrae, California, The Kitchen has become a local institution for lovers of traditional Cantonese cuisine both in the morning for dim sum, and in the evening for large family-size dinners. With a city like Millbrae and a region of the Peninsula where serving this type of cuisine, it is hard to stand out among their many similar competitors, of which a number of them also reside along El Camino Real, but somehow The Kitchen continues to thrive, so much so that even parking around the exterior of their restaurant can be scarce. But luckily on the weekday evening that a group of ten of us went for dinner, we managed to find a spot right in front of the restaurant. We were not expecting the restaurant to be so crowded, even though it was evening and prime dinner time, the best reservation we could get was at 7 p.m., and they were still packed. The a la carte dinner menu at The Kitchen is separated into categories including Appetizer, BBQ Specialty, Soup Specialty, Abalone, Cantonese Style Entrées, Regional Chinese, Poultry & Meat Dishes, Clay Pot, Wok Simmered & Tofu, Veggies, Noodles & Rice Dishes, in addition to their multi-course pre-fix dinners for families. This evening our group decided to order a la carte, with eight entrées being just the right amount of food for our group. We started with their Crispy Skin Ham Hock, continued with their Thick Chicken Soup with Fish, Braised Fish Chunks with Tofu served in a Clay Pot, Stir-Fry Ribeye Steak Cubes with Broccoli, Stir-Fry Chicken with Chinese Broccoli, Peking Spareribs, Sautéed Mixed Vegetables, and Salted Fish & Diced Chicken Fried Rice. Our meal wasn't necessarily delivered in the order that we were expecting as the Crispy Skin Ham Hock came out first and was a real surprise as by its initial appearance the whole plate looked overcooked, but upon first bite every piece was juicy and flavorful. The benefits of a heavily used deep fryer, who knew? Another highlight of our meal was their Fish and Tofu served in, as the components of the pot were seasoned well and plentiful. In fact, all of the dishes came in rather reasonable portions, and we were most definitely full once the evening was over. Our family meal made me realize what we have been missing all these years since our last visit to The Kitchen. With a rather innocuous name like The Kitchen, you wouldn't consider it the most glamorous place even suburban in Millbrae, but they still proudly show off their Michelin Guide Recommendation from over a decade ago as if they are all still new and worth celebrating. From this meal, some dishes were better than others like their Mixed Vegetables featured a good amount of wood ear mushrooms, which is not the normal case when we enjoy a sautéed entree like this. And their Fried Rice entree was nice and extra salty thanks to the plentiful amounts of extra salted fish in every bite. Return visits to The Kitchen are in order for any visitor, both local and out of town, crowds are heavy no matter the time of day , and if you can get reservations, I suggest you do so immediately, as their menu is in both Chinese and English and features plenty of pictures, which is helpful for any lover of Cantonese delights. We came on a holiday so my parents got there 15 minutes before opening to make sure we were able to get a table right away. Place was decent size with a good mix of four tops and big round tables with lazy Susan's. You can order from the carts or with the waiter! Everything was fresh and good. Under new management, The Kitchen's dim sum menu is truncated compared to other dim sum restaurants in the Burlingame/Millbrae area. The place was packed on a Monday after the Lunar New Year weekend as a lot of people don't have to work today. The food was OK. You can order the dim sum from a paper menu. There is a single dim sum cart that roams around. The confusing part is, some of the items we ordered from the paper menu were available on the cart only. The dim sum cart never came by our table. We had to ask one of the waiters for help to get the shrimp dumplings and sticky rice chicken for us. Total before tax and tip for two was $70. Service was excellent. read more
