Also be prepared to pay 20% more on local holidays, which is ridiculous to put that on your customers and travelers, who are already paying thousands just to come to your area. After 20 minutes of watching tables seated after us order and get their food we asked the manager if we could move to a table someone would wait on. He took our order. Food arrived, we ate. Average bar food quality and service friendly but slow. Staff greeted us and said we could sit anywhere- yet we sat down and manager kid (not the older man) came and moved us due to a big party of 32 coming in. Needless to say that didnt happen. 90 mins later still empty. We had Bangers and mash - average and nothing special. Seasonal veggies took over the plate. Our second dish was their Ribeye. Very tough and chewy. Served w fries. Salads were late and served w dinner. Dressing was honey mustard - no options. Beer was cold and wine perfect so all in all a 3 but Alice Mays and Monson down the street were both better for dinner. For two our meal was 100$ and neither of us enjoyed our meal. I was really excited to try some New Zealand steak, and ordered the Surf & Turf, which was a massive dish that included West Coast ribeye, tiger prawns, and New Zealand green lip mussels. The dish was only 3 stars. The steak, though cooked medium rare, was a bit tough. There was waaay to much butter and white cream over the food. However, my wife ordered the ribs, and that dish was a solid 5 star. One of the best ribs I've had in a while. Fall of the bone tender, and well-seasoned. The ribs also came with fat potato wedges that were also delicious. The service was friendly, though be careful, during high tourist season, you might have to wait up to an hour for a table! read more

Very average food. The landing is located on the main drag in Franz Joseph so you'll find this place constantly packed. We visited on Christmas Day because it was the only place open. Service was friendly, but unnecessarily slow - but I found slow service to be a chronic New Zealand issue. Overall the food was pretty disappointing. The rib eye was very tough, mussels were INEDIBLE - fishy, dry and flavorless, beers tasted like Budweiser, wines were meh. Also food is expensive! I went to their local grocery store and was much happier just eating a loaf of their fresh-baked cheesy bacon bread. read more

Hate to burst your bubble, but the Landing is just an okay bar located on the Main Street in Franz josef glacier. I went for lunch and given it was raining, I was not able to sit outside which would have been my first choice. Inside, a couple of people nodded at me to "sit anywhere" but that was harder than I thought given we were a party of two and most tables were for 4 or 6. We finally took a two top right by the bar. I ordered a Caesar salad with chicken and my friend had the nachos. Neither was very good. The Caesar salad had odd greens (looked like dandelions) and were drowning in salad dressing which made the whole thing a soggy mess, and my friend's nachos were more BBQ sauce sweetness than spicy. But the beer was cold so that was a plus. Probably should have ordered a burger as the people at the next table had one and it looked pretty good. Did I order wrong? Maybe. But given the great dinner I had at another place down the street, The Landing has some work to do to be competitive. For in this instance, location isn't everything! read more

We came here and ordered the spicy tomato soup, cajun chicken sandwich with brie and bacon, and a side of local seasonal vegetables (I was getting desperate for greens!). Absolutely lovely atmosphere, delicious food, friendly staff. We stopped in for dinner after a long drive from Picton, so glad we did. I asked customers their favorite. Several recommended the lamb shanks, some said the ribs, others said steak. I ordered the lamb shanks FREAKING FANTABULOUS! the meat fell of the bone and just delis with great veggies :) My only suggestion is to ask for the sauce on the side. Awesome location and nice friendly staff. Great deck with cozy heaters everywhere. Very inviting. Now for the rough part -- the food, almost universally across the menu, was bad. Like tire rubber chicken. To a pizza that didn't know if it was a quesadilla, a tortilla with whatever was left in the kitchen, or a bad experiment. We ate here 3 times in one day. Seriously. We watched the NFL playoff games here on the huge screen they have set up. The food was decent and they offer free WiFi, which was key because there wasn't any where we were staying. We had Gunard as the fish. It was grilled perfectly. Served over vegetables and mashed potato. The place Had a real local feel which very much surprised me given that Franz Josef is a tourist spot. Ordered the cheeseburger and fries while the wife went with the nachos. Both meals were large servings, so any of you who get off on large servings of average tasting food will love The Landing. In my opinion, they should send the chef to visit Pauley's in Taupo to learn how to make a GREAT burger. Average just does not cut it and volume does not compensate for quality. Th Landing is your run-of-the-mill small tourist town lunch spot. They have a relatively varied menu - from chicken schnitzel, seafood chowder, and salads - but nothing really stands out on the menu. The drink menu is comprehensive albeit nothing special. I ordered the country lamb casserole, which is more or less winter veg and lamb stewed into a gravy roux, and it was okay at best. My friends had the seafood chowder and the chicken schnitzel, which, also, was just "okay" according to them. The servers were very friendly, but not altogether attentive. You will not go wrong by eating here, but it's also nothing special and isn't all that quick. read more

We stopped in at happy hour, the drink prices weren't that bad. But surprisingly, for what looked like a bar kind of place, the food was really good. And the service was great. We had an app of some fried mix of spring rolls, dumplings, and something, which was ok. But we were both very happy with our main dishes. I had a salad and the seafood chowder, which was full of flavor as well as seafood. My wife had the fish and chips which was good, but a bit greasy for my taste. It would have paired better with my beer than her wine. Both of our salads were great, the greens were very flavorful, and the veggies were nice. So it's not a full 5 stars, but it is pretty good. We picked The Landing because it was rated the highest in the area and close to where we were staying. Atmosphere was great and the TVs were large. Good sports bar/restaurant. The Seafood Chowder and Mussels were excellent, the burgers were average, but I would not recommend the white bait fish dish. Was told one price $8 on arrival for drinks to be half way done and told it will be $18 because we weren't "locals" from the absolute rudest manager. I would recommend anything other than this place. There isn't much in this location for food but pack a sandwich if you have to to avoid eating at this place. This would be unacceptable in any other part of the world and should not be tolerated here. read more
