    Club Sandwich
    James K.

I was in the area and a friend recommended this place; they told me they have a great club sandwich and that was all I needed to hear. New to TX coming from SoCal and getting a great club sandwich in SoCal is pretty easy but I haven't had great success here in TX so I thought I would give this place a try. I walked in and because it was early in the week and not quite lunch time, I had my choices of places to sit. Because I was dining alone, I figured the bar was going to be a good choice. The bar seems to be "sports" oriented with several flat screens playing some live sporting event. As a note to the management, one was an interview I'm guessing was with a sports figure. However, there was no closed captioning so unless you can read lips, it seemed pointless to have this on. And with all the games you could replay, just seems you could have shown something other than two people talking with no way of knowing what they are saying. I ordered the club but noticed it was served with "aioli" and I was VERY specific with the server that I could not have aioli. Seems simple... but I guess not. I received my sandwich and the bread seemed fried instead of toasted. I could be wrong but I would have preferred toasted. Fried toast is just too greasy. It came with a white cheddar cheese which I debated leaving on. I had no idea it was melted (not stated in the menu) and had I known it was melted, I definitely would have opted to leave the cheese off. A traditional club does not come with any cheese and this is mostly supposed to be a cold sandwich and cheese is just too much when it's melted. It comes with shredded lettuce like you would find on a taco instead of a crisp piece of lettuce. Because the lettuce was shredded, the lettuce was really soggy. The tomato was minimal but not as minimal as the bacon. Instead of strips of bacon, this was more like bacon bits you would fine on a wedge salad. And to really add insult to everything else... it had aioli on it! Despite emphatically asking for NO aioli... not even on the side, and definitely not on the sandwich, there was an overwhelming garlic taste which ruined the entire sandwich and made it inedible. I tried eating one quarter of the sandwich but it was simply revolting. Worst of all, when I looked at the bread, you could see where the aioli had been spread on the sandwich, but someone apparently later realized it was supposed to be without, and removed it. But what that person doesn't seem to understand... it's too late. Once you have put that on the bread, as much as you might try, you are not going to remove that garlic taste. It was almost as if it was intentional because I ordered something special. How hard is it to start over? Toast new bread and start over? But no... they had to use the bread that aioli had been slathered on and then they tried to remove it. This just screams to me how little they care about the food they serve and how little they care about their customers. I really don't know if this would have been a good sandwich if it didn't have the aioli because I really couldn't stomach another bite. And the pleasure of a club sandwich is all the crispness that comes with it. Crispy toasted bread, not greasy fried bread. Fresh crisp lettuce, not shredded wilted lettuce. If any cheese, it should be cold, not melted. And use some actual bacon, not little bacon bits. For a $20 sandwich, I was certainly expecting much more. On the positive side, the french fries were quite good and my server, Dillon, was great. I assume Dillon took the correct order since even though there had been aioli applied to the bread, it was removed. I assume it's the kitchen where the problem exists. Again, I came during a very slow time; actually there was only one other customer so they weren't overwhelmed. I was dining alone and ordered a simple sandwich and just asked to hold the condiment and they couldn't get that right. They weren't being slammed with dozens of orders and people lining up out the door to get in. So, it really makes me question the quality of the rest of their food. Can't think of any reason to ever come back.

    Meatloaf Bites

Came here for a quick bite with my in-laws and we absolutely loved it! The Meatloaf Bites - Super tasty the sauce was the best part, and a very generous portion for sharing The Prime Rib Sandwich - This was a favorite everything was so flavorful and the beef was cooked perfectly Fish & Chips - Breaded a bit more than I'd prefer but the fish was cooked well We live close by and would 100% come back! The desserts were also so good too! The Dump Cake is a must order!

    The Southern Burger

Older part of Lakeway, this location is situated conveniently off of 620 S. First time visiting. Upon walking in, the place looked cozy with plenty of room for patrons. Slight smell of cleaning agent instead of the aroma of fine dining was a bit disappointing. No hostess when walking in but eventually came to our attention. The waitress was courteous and attentive during dining. I had the southern burger which was way way overpriced at $19 making lunch an incredibly expensive hour. With this said, the chef and cooks did execute the burger meat (thick medium) to perfection. Two negatives with the construction of the burger. The bacon was hard to bite through. Very strange. The fried onion strings were greasy and clumpy which I had to remove altogether. Side of fries were hot and crispy. The two slices of pickles in a cup was an odd duck. Yes, I will return to try many other menu items. Would I recommend, not really. The restaurant sort of straddles that fine line of good and me too. For the price, one might consider walking across the parking lot to Santa Caterina which is exceptional for Lakeway.

Bone-in Pork Chop with Brussels sprouts

So, OK - the food here is just totally world class. My sister & BIL & I ate here tonight, and everything we had was flipping amazeballz. I had the Adult Grill Cheese, sourdough with avocado added & tomato basil soup. Delish. My BIL had the bone-in Pork Chop special, which came with tasty Brussels sprouts & he loved it. My sister had the shrimp lime salad, & she is north of her 50th decade, & she said it was THE BEST salad she's ever had. And she's eaten a lot of great salads. First-time visitors are offered a free chocolate dessert. Very top notch touch! The drinks were creative & delicious also. Unfortch, we are just in town for a wedding & can't come back; but if you live in Austin, this place is worth going out of your way! See my 4 pictures!

Tuna Tartare Tacos. tuna - avocado - spicy mayo - sesame seeds - wonton shell. SOO DELICIOUS!

It's been a minute since we've been to The League, but I'm not gonna wait so long for my next visit. The coconut shrimp appetizer was REALLY tasty... hot & crispy (not sitting under a heat lamp) and the tuna tacos stole the show for me I'm a pescatarian & it can be challenging to find new & tasty options other than salmon (not that I don't love salmon, but sometimes I want something different.) The tuna tasted fresh, not chewy, cubed perfectly. Of course my daughter loooves the Mac & cheese. And their crème brûlée was a nice way to cap it all off. Our waitress, Olga, was super sweet & attentive. A+++

This is one of my favorite pubs you can grab good food and GREAT cocktails! I've tried fried chicken, sandwiches, burgers, salad, mac n cheese, spinach cream, etc. and my favorite was fried chicken. It came with super crispy chicken, some biscuits and it's just SO delicious. I also love their cocktails, I always get long island iced tea and the one comes with cucumbers. You should definitely try this cocktail, it's really refreshing, just perfect for Summer!

Very Sad Truffle Honey Chicken and Biscuit. (Picture on left is from the online menu)

For the past three or so years, we have been going to both the Cedar Park and Lakeway locations every few months and love both the environment inside and taking out togo. Nearly every time, we have left satisfied and glad we went. Unfortunately, this time was not the same. While we almost always get the burgers since they are fantastic, we decided to switch it up and I ordered the Truffle Honey Chicken Biscuit. I'm not sure if the photo on the site is a total lie or if they simply ran out of supplies and gave us kids chicken tenders but it was definitely a bit of a shock. Still going for the 4 stars since I've never written a review from all the previous times where we enjoyed our meal but was bummed after this most recent trip.

Upscale beer is available as well as elegant Yuppie beverages. They have very good filtered water served for free in a nice samovar. I recommend the samovar. * * * I am likely to be fussier about Chicknic than are Bee Cave Residents. I would take those enthusiastic Bee Cave Resident reviews seriously. Factors that shape my not-with-the-crowd views on Chicknic. 1) It is actually harder than one thinks to do a roast chicken and chicken tenders restaurant that beats the competition because the competition happens to be very good. 1a) If you want chicken to die for, Your two best options are to go Peruvian or Guatemalan, All of which are available in Greater Austin. Inka, a Peruvian fast food restaurant on Wells Branch in the Pflugerville/North Austin nether land Makes some of the best roast chicken on the planet. Guatemalan chicken - which is done best if fried, can be found at Pollo Campero in Round Rock and the Buda/Kyle nether land. Pollo Campero is another experience not to be missed. 1b) If you limit the competition narrowly to American fast food chains, the chicken category actually has some of the most high integrity fast food chains in the country. Chick-Fil-A sets the standard for putting out good honest food in a fast food format. It doesn't hurt that they are ecologically responsible as well. They play "Southern Fast Food" because that is what they have to do for marketing ... but they are actually working at a higher level. Boston Market is more in the take-home-dinner niche. But they also turn out a high integrity product. 1c) The level of the competition means that Chicknic really has to be very good in order to beat out formidable rivals. 2) Bee Cave is seriously restaurant short. This is particularly the case given the high density of high income residents. So it doesn't take much to be a major contributor to the Bee Cave scene. Lakeway used to be that way - but Lakeway is finally fully restaurant stocked. Austin and Round Rock are rolling in restaurants. So us Yelpers from out of town can afford to be a little fussier than can Bee Cave Residents who for now are over a barrel. (Over time, Bee Cave will fill in appropriately.) * * * So what is my take on Chicknic? Under-salted. There is not enough alternative spice and not enough native flavor to make up for a basic lack of NaCl. Salt at the table would be a huge form of First Aid here. It could be fancy Pink Himalayan Salt from a gourmet store if management needs something more in sync with the ethos of the place. Strangely the sauce I had (the sweet sauce that comes with the tenders) does not provide enough spark to cover for the chicken. And sad to say, the tenders just are not all that interesting as chicken, given the other stupendous chicken dishes that are available elsewhere in town. It could be the roast chicken is better than the tenders. It could be that the alternative vegetable side dishes are stupendous ... Although - the salt question aside - my traditional French Fries weren't too bad. * * * I think management really wants to have a legendary classy place. Certainly, most Bee Cave residents are not going to drive to Wells Branch to get take out chicken to bring home. Locals give this place enthusiastic Yelp Reviews. I see their point. If you live in Bee Cave, believe your neighbors. If you are the type of person who eats all over the place, then you may be more in agreement with fussy old me.

Make sure to ask for extra butter because they only provide a small container. As big as it is and 4 adults, you would think they would automatically provide enough butter for each. The night was so busy that when we finally did ask and got it, the bread was already cold. The lemon brick chicken was another favorite dish in our group. It was tasty. The best dish was the fish (cod). It was superb, since we were disappointed in our own meals, we were fortunate the birthday girl shared with us. The fish was cooked excellent. Let me summarize by saying that based on prices, staff, and time for food to come to us, it wasn't worth it. I think a better choice would have been Trattoria Lisina in Driftwood where you don't have to pay for the bread and staff is always there to take care of you and get the food to you in a more expeditious fashion. Fortunately, Tilley's is beautiful therefore the surroundings make time go by a little quicker. I did send a similar note to Tilley's, but they did not respond.
