There couldn't be a less serious accounting firm than Jong Lee's. First, there was the time my personal and financial data was exposed through a security breach (presumably not just me, but all of their clients). Their primary concern was denying responsibility rather than helping navigate the resulting ID fraud hold that was placed on our tax return. (And no, you won't get your refund while there's a fraud hold on your account.) Then there was this past year's return... They filed a return that inflated our tax bill by more than 40%. It just seemed too fantastical an amount, so I asked them to review the numbers again, and even specifically pointed them to what I thought might be wrong. They insisted everything was correct. I called another CPA to get a second opinion, and she quickly explained our return was horribly wrong. So I paid her to review my last three years in detail. I can't even say out loud the total dollar value of the mistakes Jong Lee and his staff accountant Alex cost us because it's all too embarrassing. Alex (but not Jong, who couldn't actually be bothered) eventually acknowledged the issue, and promised to fix everything and reimburse me for the second CPA review. Well, I'm still waiting, but now they just ignore my calls and emails. I'm not sure what their strategy is other than to hope I disappear, but that isn't going to happen. read more

I came to this firm because I needed to correct my 2018 personal income taxes. I'm just a salaried employee with a simple W2 and a few retirement accounts, so my taxes aren't incredibly complicated other than the fact that a mistake needed to be corrected. Their team charged me $775 for the refile, which I thought was a bit high, but I thought I'd be paying for the additional support dealing with the IRS so it might be worth it. Four months after I paid them, my 2018 return still hasn't been accepted by the IRS and their team ignores my emails and brushes me off whenever I reach out for an update. In the meantime, I asked them to prepare my 2019 taxes -- again, I'm a salaried employee with a simple W2 and just a few investment accounts. Filing on TurboTax would have cost me about $70. When the Lee Accountancy Group had finished copying and pasting my W2 and 1099 form information into my tax return, they sent me another bill for $780. So to recap, they've charged me $1,555 for two fairly simple personal income tax returns. The first one still has not been processed and they act like I'm a pain in the ass for asking for updates about it, and now they want me to pay them multiples of the standard market rate for my second return. Independent Contractors....BEWARE. I came to the Lee Accountancy group last April, 2019, to do my taxes and a game plan for quarterly payments. I followed the Lee Accountancy Group's advice to my detriment. They were pushy and aggressive about getting me to sign an agreement to do my taxes and collecting $500. Once I gave them the $500, I was as good as dead to them. They did 2 things wrong: 1) The major screw up, they told me I owed $22,000 in taxes (they were actually way off) 2) The minor screw up, they messed up my quarterly payments amount. I ended up overpaying by nearly $12,000 In short, they screwed up my taxes so bad that I thought I owed $22,000. In reality I overpaid by $12,000. Oh you know, just a minor oversight of $36,000. Do not use this accountant firm for estate taxes. Unfortunately for our family, we hired Jong Lee of Lee Accounting almost two years ago to help with final estate taxes ... and he has NOT met a SINGLE court deadline. The firm took my $7500 and was late filling last years. He had the necessary information the prior September. Even worse, after our initial meeting... it's was always almost impossible to talk to personally. The staff mastered the art of delaying with misc excuses like " travels , sick, etc." during our most CRUCIAL time points. And ... the BILLING DOES NOT match his time spent on our account. Our irs tax return was stolen via a data breach from the online service Lee Accountancy uses to file tax returns and store all our most private information. I've had to freeze my credit and change all online passwords. Months later I'm still trying to get my tax return with minimal help and support from Lee Accountancy Group. I now need to book an in person appointment with an IRS advocate to confirm my identity before getting my return. This is after multiple steps trying to do this online. Meanwhile I receive Lee Accountancy marketing emails that come across tone deaf given the data breach they themselves experienced. I'd rather know what Lee Accountancy is doing to protect their customers then them telling us about tax news and marketing material. read more

Overall,this place is overrated. Those 5 stars reviews did lead us to spend $400.00 but I guess one time only. There's no suggestions or useful information. I turned to Mr. Lee for advice in running my first small business. The worst thing he did was to advise me to open a 401k through this program. As a 2 employee business, a 401K has been so much hassle and extra paperwork, I regret not asking for a second opinion and finding out that an IRA is what small businesses do instead. 401ks are for much larger companies! Now I'm stuck processing so much more paperwork every year and paying huge fees. She wouldn't disclose the nature of her call, only that she wanted to 'speak to the owner'. So I said I was the owner and then she began to give a sales pitch about how she could offer a consultation on accounting services for me - sounds like a solicitation to me! He was a very pleasant man to speak with, yet I wasn't sure if I could use his services, due to the nature of my business. A few weeks ago I reached out to him, to see if he knew of someone that could address some "business issues" that I thought wouldn't apply to his company. After several minutes of gathering information and finding out what I was trying to do, he gave me some suggestions and informed me (very nicely) that the services I was looking for was what he does (?!?!?!?!). We made a appointment to meet and he told me, in greater detail, of what I needed to do to get "back on track" and how he could help me and my business get there. My husband and I started working with Jong 4 years ago. For the past year, he was helping us with a complicated tax audit. This audit was a result of our former tax professional who not only botched our income tax reporting for that year but also dropped us when it came time to fix the mistakes he had done. That person basically disappeared from the face of the earth and left us to deal with this mess. Jong came to our rescue and re-filed an income tax report on our behalf. The IRS took 1 year to "review"our case. This did not stop the letters sent by the Franchise Tax Board and the IRS' Collection department saying we owed over 10k in taxes for that year. Jong answered all these letters on our behalf, and placed multiple phone calls as well, including telling the IRS review Board to speak with the Collection department. This last phone call did the trick. Finally, we received a letter from the IRS saying that we owed nothing and that a refund check was on its way!!! We certainly could not have made it through this ordeal without Jong's calm, professional expertise; he knows the ins and outs of the IRS, who to speak to and how to speak to them. I'm a Do-It-Yourself guy. Until last year, that also pertained to taxes. I had been using a few online tax platforms (whichever was cheapest), but there's always been doubt in the back of my mind. Am I maximizing my returns or am I leaving something on the table? And so last year I did something about it and made an appointment with Mr. Lee. I liked his consultative, no BS approach. He made me feel at ease, answered all my questions, and gave me solid advice. Are my taxes tricky right now? Not especially. But my taxes will undoubtedly get more complicated in the near future (house, kids, businesses, etc.). I'm building the relationship now, because I know that I need a trusted accountant in my corner. Posting under my pseudo. I tried year after year to give this place a chance and I gave up. I did not realize the breach of my taxes came from this company until I read the other reviews but from the way they run their business, I can see how it happened and from their email they took no personal accountability which does not build trust and is why I'm not working with them any longer. I have tried over and over again to discuss my previous years tax return issues with them, when I call to inquire around an update no one seems to know what's going on, I ask them about paperwork THEY sent me and they need me to read them word for word what the paperwork says, which makes me wonder about their file keeping system, why after giving you my personal identification information can't you look up the paperwork you sent me and answer some simple questions giving me an update? And instead of doing that the person transfers me to Mr Lee who is apparently out of office so can't help me anyway. One time I called about paperwork they sent me, actually went into the office to discuss it, one person told me I needed to file documents when the form from the IRS clearly said THEY need to file documents, and after a steady week of asking for updates they filed the document with no additional action needing to be done by me according to the voicemail they sent a day after the documents deadline. Does that sound like professional client management when someone doesn't want to take the time to help you, pushes you off on someone else who also gives you no answers and your situation continued to be unresolved? Does that sound a knowledgeable CPA business when they don't seem to know what they're talking about to your detriment? At this point I'm going to speak directly to the IRS to get the situation resolved hopefully and I'm going to the Better Business Bureau with a complaint on this business. There is no reason that you all should be taking on so much work that you can't keep track of your clients or their tax situation. I sincerely only post this because I really want ya'll to reflect on what seems like from other reviews, a serious downward spiral in good client business management. I would like a negative star option for this business since our experience with Jong Lee was so bad. I had to go in 4 times to get our return corrected due to sloppy errors by this firm. We noticed that Jong Lee did not seem at familiar with how the software created our return and there was an inordinate amount of staff turnover for a tiny firm of about 10 people. I found out from a few former employees I see often around the area I work that Jong Lee does not prepare any of the returns. His staff prepares returns and he has no clue how to use any of the software. The excessive staff turnover other than his wife and her nephew is the result of Jong Lee verbally abusing staff. Hi, My husband and I used Mr Lee to file our taxes last year and it was an unmitigated disaster. Let me begin my explaining our situation. I'd just moved to Oakland from Boston in Feb 2015 and I had a month's (Jan 2015) worth of income in Massachusetts along with income in California through the rest of the year. In addition, my husband is a graduate student at Berkeley who's stipend is only partially taxable. So in Mr Lee's defense, he had his work cut out for him. Any other accountant to my mind, would have sat down with us so that we could explain the situation clearly. Mr. Lee did not seem to want a lengthy discussion at our first meeting, which is OK in itself. We were then expecting that he would start on the forms and call us in to go over them. He however, filled them out and filed them without our reviewing them. He also made a mistake with the tax returns for my husband's stipend. So then we had to file a revision. The whole process was far lengthier and painful than it had to be. And above all, Mr Lee didn't seem apologetic or that helpful. Frankly communication with him was lacking a LOT. Now, I should have written this review before. But last year was difficult b/c my job wasn't working out and my husband and I had just moved in together. This year, we used H&R block for our tax returns and the whole process was extremely smooth and painless. I do NOT recommend this tax accountant. If you are willing to followup constantly and micromanage things or are a DIY kind-of-person, he might work. but if the latter is true, you'd be better suited just filing the taxes on your own.
