She comes here all the time…read more Today is her birthday, so I wanted to do something special for her that she would love, but what to get? Then...it hit me. Get her a gift card to Hallmark and let her pick out whatever she wanted. The staff was nice and quickly grabbed a card to ring up for me. Suddenly, it was like I stepped into the twilight zone?!?! First, the only accepted cash for GC's. Who does that? Luckily, I overcame this because I had $50 on me (for the first time in forever). Then, the young lady at the counter couldn't seem to get it to ring up. She was nice, but clearly struggling with the machine. Three trips to the back later, a co-worker emerges and has even less luck. They called a co-worker...no help. Their boss calls...no help. They even called Hallmarks 1-800 number and still nothing! WTH?!?! I wasted 45 min and left empty handed, and now no time to get anything else. Stinks! My youngest son loves picking out his stuffed animal and then getting to choose a heart to stuff into his new fur friend. This location isn't as large as the Penn Square one, but they still carry a good amount of furry friends, accessories, and clothing for the stuffed animals. We always end up with a smell good patch and an outfit. They also sing you happy birthday during your birthday month! You can also get the happy birthday bear for the price of your child's age. So, if your child is turning 7, the bear will cost you $7.00. Can't say anything negative, BAB makes the experience fun for everyone.

But during my first visit to Mike's Models, I remembered exactly why hobby shops are so crucial to the craft of model aviation. I recently purchased two beautiful .90 size models, from the family of a Shawnee area veteran, now deceased nearly 15 years. While my past modeling experience has been primarily related to small electric park flyers, I was terribly excited to get these two 1/4 scale planes back into the air. After some online searching, I purchased some parts and radio equipment to bring these planes up to date. However, time after time I would receive an order of parts, only to find that I still needed an extra nickel or dime sized component to advance my rehab. When I finally made the drive out to Mike's Models, I was pleasantly surprised. Not only did I enjoy shop talk with three experienced modelers, but Mike had everything I needed to get my project back on track toward completion! Following some light conversation about the equipment I had recently acquired, Mike handed me the parts I needed out of his current stock. No waiting for online orders, and prices were perfectly on par. After purchasing the parts, he was also kind enough to show me some interesting airplane build projects that he had in process. While I probably wouldn't consider this the typical customer experience, I can say that Mike is tremendously welcoming and genuinely excited about his hobby & craft. So you've always wanted to get into model aviation, but don't know where to start. You've read some blogs, bought a few inexpensive models from overseas, but haven't found success. It's time to confer with the local professional. Consider supporting your local model aviation expert and head down to Mike's Models. He has years of experience, plenty of stock on hand, and would love to share his passion for model aviation with you. Do it for the sake of the hobby, and do it for the sake of our community.
