For some reason I hadn't been by the Local Press for awhile (no particular reason, just not in the neighborhood) so today when I was in the Woodfords area I stopped in and was reminded what a great sandwich place this is! It was a freezing winter day and something melty sounded good, so I went for the Orchard Turkey, which also includes bacon, apples, melted sharp cheddar, and spicy mayo. So good! I can also vouch for their Reuben, having had that in the past. Super friendly staff, always, and next time I need to try the little sitting area they have inside as well, which looks cheery! The aesthetics were quaint and unique. The service was great and helpful for out of towners. We ordered back shore ham panini that was spot on. The only thing lacking was the balsamic. Wife ordered the gluten free turkey. It was really good. Def recommend. read more

I rushed in on my way to a meeting and ordered a house salad and caprese sandwich with turn. I was nervous about time, especially as the small shop began to fill with more people, but it wasn't more than a 10 minute wait. My sandwich was flavorful and filling. This place is pricey. Small bag of Chips are 3 dollars vs 1.50 at vending machine. 14 dollars for a sandwich. Almost 20 dollars for chips and a sandwich .. oof. Sandwich had an odd off taste to it and had made major indigestion a few hours later. Flavorless sandwich and had to pay 3 dollars for chips. No pickle no nothing. Not worth the money. A friend was ordering sandwiches for an outdoor gathering and I decided that I would also, based on the vast menu at The Local Press was the way to go. I love the variety of sandwiches and paninis. The combinations they created made it difficult to decide. I decided to look at the pictures and reviews on yelp to make my decision. According to Jessica D, "Always get THE DUDE" - so I did! Although I really wanted to try the orchard. :) I ordered the dude and was NOT disappointed! The sandwich was assembled perfectly! The ingredients were balanced and layered perfectly on the fresh bread. The Turkey, the Bacon, the Avocado, Cheese, Lettuce and Chipotle Mayo...It was flavorful and satisfying. I absolutely loved it. As I reflect on my sandwich experience, I remember unwrapping it, and looking around to see the sandwiches my friends ordered, I was jealous by their panini grill marks, but that was short lived as I started to eat my sandwich. 5 Stars, NO DOUBT!!!! Amazing sandwiches, with just as an amazing staff. If you like blue cheese then you need to do yourself a favor and get the "Good Life" sandwich. My wife swears this is the best sandwich she's ever had, Hands Down! Everything we tried including our kid's grilled cheese was just phenomenal! We were in the area on a vacation, and now we plan on going back to Portland, Maine because we had so many great experiences. Not sure why I waited to post this review. My bad. Having lunch with a colleague and our first option fell through. Was in the area and suggested TLP. So glad we did. What a great experience You can easily pass by TLP when driving, so pay attention and stop by. You will not regret it. They are not huge but have great seating options. The menu is awesome. My colleagues went for the salad which was just what she needed because of dietary constraints. I will die the chill which was awesome, even in the summer months. Then there was dessert. OMG. The cheesecake, which might have been peanut butter was off the chain. The staff is great and the food is fantastic. Waiting for my next lunch meeting. read more

My son had a track meet at USM. There was some time between his events so we decided to grab some lunch. I had The Dude. It was very good. I asked for modifications ( no cheese, plain mayo) and the sandwich was made the way I requested. My husband had roast beef. He seemed to enjoy it as he ate the whole thing. As we were eating one of the employees came up to us and said the made a double order of our sandwiches and gave us two more sandwiches. They could have thrown them out. We probably won't be back only because we don't live in the area. However, if we did I would definitely go back. read more

I can't believe I haven't already reviewed this place! How is that possible? Let's see - where to begin. First this is a tiny sandwich shop, but big on flavor and friendliness. I've probably had at least 6 different sandwiches from the regular menu, plus the many specials I get tempted by. They use fresh ingredients (tomatoes so red and baby spinach that looks like it was plucked that morning). They have a variety of creative sandwiches all made with Boar's Head products. Hot and cold. Oh, and soup (which I have yet to try). I've not had a sandwich here that I wouldn't get again. But also can't stop from trying something new each time. Oh, and they have cheesecake! And I mean good New York style cheesecake, but with a twist. One of the young men that works there makes them and is always trying something new. Like apple pie cheesecake or Bailey's Irish Creme. They are so good - and they sell out quickly. So, if they have it when you are there, get it! You won't regret it! This is one of my go to lunch spots! And they made it even better recently when they opened the Tap Side....but that's another review. read more

A simple menu but a good one. Hot and cold sandwiches, but menu is a bit meat-heavy. Look out for the panini special and soup special! It changes every day and is always something fun and tasty. I wish there were a vegan option--maybe a tempe panini--and a healthier side option, but everything they do have is delicious and fresh. I highly recommend The Islander! Stumbled upon this place when I was trying to find new lunch spots near my new workplace. Wicked cute and unassuming, The Local Press boasts a fun and diverse sandwich menu that can please all ages. From hot options to cold options, there is surely something that will catch your eye! When I first glanced upon the menu, the sandwich called "The Dude" immediately caught my attention. Turkey, bacon, avocado, cheese, and chipotle mayo, YUM! It is filled to the brim and I will admit; I have come back to The Local Press for just this sandwich alone. It is that good! Next time I will have to try something else because the menu looks so great and there's many more I want to try. The service is so friendly too, I could come here everyday. You can also get beer and fun drinks here as well, unfortunately I have not been able to take advantage of this yet because I always have to go back to work! Someday.... :) read more

One of my favorite places. Great products and always consistent. They have a punch card for free sandwiches! I recently became a vegetarian and they still have yummy choices. My previous favorites were on their secret menu, called the Greatful Ched & the Green Monster.. so delicious. Now my favorite is The Freshie. Came around lunch on a Tuesday in late July. I tried the Good Life sandwich based on another review. It small with meager ingredients underflavored, nothing special. Only one beer selection. Seating next door at the bar had zero ambience, we were the only ones. A courthouse food court would be more welcoming atmosphere wise. Had to ask for napkins and silverware although the staff were nice. If I lived in the neighborhood I might give them a second try, but we had driven over an hour to do errands in Portland and try out this place. Husband had The Flip, a take on a Rueben, not hot, served poorly, in his words, "an embarrassment made as if the person making it did not care at all and had never tried it." Giving two stars for the friendly person at the cash register. Price was high for what you get. No chips, only the sandwich. read more

Staying in Portland for Christmas with my family and needed a quick hearty bite for lunch before going grocery shopping. My mom and I split the Beacon Street (turkey and avocado sandwich) and each had a cup of the Rundown soup (coconut curry and root veggies)and it was the perfect amount! I got stuck in Portland when I missed my shuttle up to Bangor. I was looking for a place that I could walk to with 2 heavy bags. So when I got here is unreasonably hot and sweaty. The server brought me a glass of ice water before he even brought the menu. That was thoughtful. I ordered the Beacon Street (turkey & avocado). It was delicious. Perfectly seasoned. The "hot" peppers really add that last little umph. Onions too. Nothing was overpowering. I saved room for an ice cream sandwich because I was feeling so sorry for myself. Let me tell ya, I've been jonesing for something *something* to fill the hole in my soul for the last couplea weeks and I think that just might have been it. Nice environment. Love this place. Lots of great options for both cold sandwiches and paninis. They use Boars Head meat and cheese for all their sandwiches. I got The Big O panini which was made with roast beef, Swiss, caramelized onions, spinach, and horseradish mayo on whole wheat panini bread. This was incredibly tasty! I can't wait to go back to try all the other options I was trying to decide between. They also have this killer Caribbean style "chowder" called The Rundown, which is AH MAZE BALLS!!! Root veggies, coconut milk, and curry. Omg you cannot pass this up. Seriously. The seating area is wicked small (read: 5 people max), but getting food to go seems to be what a lot of people do. I only had to wait like 2 minutes for my order, they made it right in front of me right away. The Local Press has awesome sandwiches made with great ingredients. They are a tad on the small side but really filling and the size matched the price point. Though I was full from just the sandwich, next time I'd like to try the soup, it looked really good! It was an easy order ahead/grab and go experience. The Deering Center area has been blessed lately with fun neighborhood bars. Woodford F&B and the soon-to-open Elsmere will get most of the talk, but Local Press Tapside is a great addition that I partly hope remains undiscovered. For selfish reasons. While Local Press has been a popular sandwich shop for years, the bar opened this summer in the adjoining building. It's quaint and cozy and feels instantly comfortable. With about eight bar seats and a handful of tables, it's intimate, but still lively. The drink list is shockingly good and unexpected. The beer on tap usually consists of a Bissell, a Foundation and a Mast Landing, with two more rotating taps (such as Lone Pine or Maine Beer Company). It's a greatest hits of Portland beer list that generally is only available at bars downtown. There are five red and white wine options ranging from $5-$10 and a cider. Liquor isn't available, but isn't missed. It's so refreshing being able to order great, cheap food at a Portland bar. There are about 15 Panini's at $8.50 and all are amazing. But the best part is, you can order just a half (for half price, of course). So feel free to mix and match, or just eat light. The homemade soups are generally just as good, and the menu also consists of salads, charcuterie, bruschetta, and milkshakes. Dessert is made inhouse and always includes a cheesecake that's almost impossibly fluffy. Service is perfect and there is cribbage and other games at the bar. Where else in Portland can you drink two glasses of wine or top shelf IPA, devour half a Panini and a soup, indulge in cheesecake and still spend about $25? Highly recommended. read more

This is most definitely a local gem that is almost too good too share! It's got both a takeout and dine in area, so I can feel free to swing by for a meal or take a sandwich to go during lunch. They've also got a rotating soup selection that's delicious! The environment is casual and relaxed, just what you want from your neighborhood sandwich shop. I've mostly ordered sandwiches to go, so I'll speak to that. Everyone who works behind the counter is extremely kind and willing to explain what's in their special sandwiches. That may sound like a funny thing to notice, but they have an extensive selection of sandwiches and lots of creative specials, so it's nice to get the information about their newest creation! One of my favorites is the Phoebe. It's a panini filled with turkey, gooey brie, caramelized onions, blueberry chipotle jam that gives it a little sweetness and heat, provolone, spinach, and mayo. They post their specials daily, so this sandwich won't always show up on the menu, but it's a popular special so the guys are more than happy to make it whether it's the special of the day or not!
