The gym is very small, and the atmosphere feels very dead and dull. I checked this place out along with several other venues, but eventually went with Fitness First as they had more gyms worldwide that I could use, and they offered more services for a lower monthly fee, and a smile when I walk through the door, (as well as independant classes too). It costs nothing to smile, and the customers are what keeps a location open; if LA Fitness realised this, I'd consider them, though one thing I don't like is when some of their staff members hang outside Fitness First Southend and try to intimidate you into leaving FF for LA, the reason I voted this place 1* in conjunction with everything else is I abhore bullying tactics such as this. Saying that, I should redress the balence of the review by saying that if you're in a rush, and only intend to use one local venue and have a bit more money, you may like LA, but I'd also advise into looking around.

A fairly decent sports centre offering various workout machines as well as swimming, with very…read morepolite staff. However, the workout machines are often always in use by someone, and the selection is quite limited, probably due to the space taken up by the pools. Also, membership is very expensive, and although it's a great rival to Fitness First, it does have less machines, fewer classes, and more costly, also, a Fitness First membership can be used in most Fitness First gyms worldwide, and they have more facilities than any other gym network. If you don't do swimming and you can get to a Fitness First, it is the better choice. The staff is helpful though, and I know the gym manager here personally. If it's local to you, you've got a bit of money to burn, or you can't make it to a Fitness First, then this is definatly the place for you, and you will enjoy it, but if you're willing to look into alternatives then Fitness First comes more recommended.
