This 12-foot obelisk was dedicated on March 14, 2026, through a partnership between the City of Pompano Beach and the Florida Society Sons of the American Revolution. It commemorates the 250th anniversary of America's first amphibious assault on foreign soil--a landing during the American Revolution in the Bahamas. In early March 1776, Nassau and New Providence Island were British colonies. George Washington received intelligence that much-needed stores of gunpowder were located there, prompting a daring naval expedition led by Commodore Esek Hopkins, alongside the Continental Marines under Samuel Nicholas. Their forces successfully landed on New Providence Island, targeting Fort Montagu and Fort Nassau, then governed by Montfort Browne. This mission marked one of the first coordinated operations between naval and marine forces and helped shape what would become the United States Marine Corps and modern amphibious warfare. With July 4, 2026 marking the 250th birthday of the United States, this monument honors a pivotal moment in the nation's founding. I love that such a meaningful piece of history has been added to the pier--it's also a perfect spot to pause, reflect, and take in the ocean view.

The Dania Beach Women's Club was organized July 18, 1923. Women's Clubs were a place for social and…read moreliterary gatherings. Over time it became a way women could push social reform and exert social and political influence when women were expected to be home makers. Early projects in the club's history included sponsoring a girl scout troop, maintaining a cemetery and Federal Highway, and supervising activities in the town's community club. In 1928 the club began fundraising for a library. Dania Builder John Anderson was hired to build the wood frame vernacular library in the corner of a city park in 1935 at a cost of $1,000. In 1950 an adjoining meeting hall was added to the building. In the 1970's the Broward County Library began operating on a county wide system and the Women's Club Library was closed in 1978. Since then the building has been used for storage and meetings.

Today, came to Gulfstream Village to watch the Cirque du Soleil venue which is directly next to the Pegasus statue. This incredible tourist attraction is the 3rd tallest statue in the United States. Made of bronze and steel at 340 tons and at a thirty million dollar price tag, it is a sight to see when visiting Hallandale. During the day you get a great view of it's details, but at night the purple hue surrounding the statue is surely unique, impressive and unforgettable.

The moment you arrive at Gulfstream Park, you're greeted by the massive Pegasus and Dragon--a dramatic sculpture of a Pegasus locked in battle with a dragon. It's bold, over-the-top, and definitely not something you see every day. Standing at 110 feet tall and weighing around 700 tons, this monumental piece was the vision of Frank Stronach, founder of the Stronach Group. The sculpture is meant to honor the role horses have played throughout civilization, with Pegasus symbolizing good triumphing over evil in its battle against the dragon. The statue itself is an impressive feat of international craftsmanship. It was designed by German firms, cast in bronze in China, and shipped to Florida in 26 containers before being assembled on-site in 2014--a process that took about eight months and reportedly cost $30 million. On select nights, the experience is elevated even further with a laser light show featuring music and bursts of fire. If you've spent any time at Gulfstream Park, you've probably seen crowds gathered around it--it's a go-to photo spot. I recently visited while in the area for Luzia, and the statue absolutely towers over the circus tent nearby. I made sure to stop by for a closer look before leaving, and that evening it was beautifully lit in pink and purple hues. Photos don't quite capture it--you really have to stand beneath it to appreciate the sheer scale and detail. It's grand, a little theatrical, and completely unforgettable. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.

An All-Veterans memorial is located in the compound shared by the Hollywood City Hall and the…read moreHollywood Branch Library. Flags from multiple divisions of the United States military including POW and the American flag are displayed high above the memorial. A portion of the memorial has a dark sculpture depicting a soldier's boots, helmet and assault weapon or "The Battlefield Cross" which represents all of the fallen soldiers who died in combat. The base of the sculpture includes the phrase "All Gave Some, Some Gave All".  The center memorial is "The Forgotten War Korea" 1950 - 1953. The bronze plaque indicates the amount of soldiers Dead, Wounded or MIA and a map of the Korean peninsula. On the outer edge of the memorial is a plaque dedicated on Memorial Day 1983 from Hollywood residents honoring veterans from WW1, WW2, Korea and Vietnam. In my opinion, the plaques need a touch up since the lettering is worn out and difficult to read. Free memorial to view and a nice piece of history.

Covered bridges are rare and finding one in South Florida especially so. This is the oldest one in…read morethe state, built in 1964 so relatively modern. It was the first permanent structure in Coral Springs. A single steel span that is 40 feet long. It is an active bridge and I was pleased that the height and weight clearance were sufficient for the Sprinter van. There is no easy parking here with signs indicating private property and no parking on the grass. As such, you can't get any good view of the logos on the side of the bridge. It has murals painted on each side of the bridge span and recently is was closed for repairs but now it is open for cars. No trucks allowed. The neighborhood that it bridges is also very nice. The history behind this bridge can be found on a raised plaque on the side of the entrance and it has some pretty interesting history. Definitely check it out and drive through if you get the chance.

Growing up in Hollywood as a kid, this light blue and white painted tower was visible from a few areas east of Federal Hwy on Sheridan Street and is directly next to West Lake Park. The second Hollywood water tower stands at Sheridan Street and i-95. Both towers not only harness water but are artistic Hollywood landmarks. Today we were driving back from Hollywood Beach and pulled off the roadway to take a few minutes to gaze at the structure. Over the years, the painted decor at the sphere-like top has changed, but the Hollywood name is still prominently displayed as a sense of pride for the historic tower. There are no tours offered for either water tower - it would be cool though. FYI..I always wanted to climb the tower by its winding staircase.

Carrying State Road 842 over the New River, the bridge connects downtown Fort Lauderdale with the beaches. It is the second bridge northbound on the Intracoastal from Port Everglades. With 31 feet of clearance, this bascule bridge (a clever French word for drawbridge) generally opens on the quarter-hour and the three-quarter hour. Recently modernized, it is a smooth transition over the water. There are two lanes in each direction with a very narrow and low curb between. There are also pedestrian walkways on each side that are protected from traffic by a low and strong wall. [Review 13281 overall, 599 of 2020.]
