When you're looking for a late night snack and there is nothing open, this is the place to go. It was my first time there and I went thru the drive thru and the wait was not bad at all. Pretty quick actually. I ended up getting something simple that no one can mess up and that was the polish with fries. It was your typical polish with everything on it and I don't remember exactly what was on it (mustard, tomato, ketchup, grilled onions etc), but it was absolutely delicious and the fries were basic fries. Well since I had a day of for June teenth day and I got my motorcycle yesterday for my friend giving me a ride I decided to take a ride and take a chance at this restaurant on lake Street every time when I used to work in oakbrook. Well I would say that this was not three stars why? I'm kind of comparing it to tasty freeze back in Chicago and these kind of places. The nachos despite giving a lot of cheese they didn't give the jalapeno peppers despite that I had an odd side order instead of fries for my Italian beef with sweet peppers however the Italian beef sandwich was actually good with the sweet peppers. I think much better than Johnny's beef up and Elmwood Park. The root beer float that I ordered was a disappointment because they put a lot more vanilla ice cream less of the root beer. Other than that this would be like the last place I would consider in regards to quality greasy American food. So i grew up on this places food and was shockingly disappointed. Came tonight as i no longer live in the area but was craving a gyros. Literally always raved about this place since i was a kid and some lady named kelly used to Always service me. Anyways i ordered my childhood favorite- gyro extra sauce and a chocolate shake. Not sure what happened but this was the worst gyro sauce ive ever had. Too much oregano or spice in it- it tasted completely off. Sad as with this experience i dont know if id stop here again. I have been eating at Lucky Dog ever since I was a kid and loved their gyros. I was in town and was excited to indulge in one of my favorites; however, I was extremely saddened by what I received. As you can see from the picture, the gyro meat was over cooked, not juicy and was hard on the outside. In addition, the tzatziki sauce was "off", more of a cream cheese and chives taste as opposed to a cucumber taste and sour cream. I may give them one more chance, but I doubt it. Been coming here since I was a little kid The area has changed and it may look a little sketchy but believe me it is good and safe!! They were always known for their gyros more then their hot dogs, but as I got older I started to get their #7 2 hot dogs and a large Root beer. They are not the best hot dog in Chicago or the surrounding area but it is always fresh and tasty! I love their crinkle fries they are always salty and delicious. Their menu has a ton of items on it, some hits some misses, their drive thru line can having you waiting at times because I think they are preparing everything fresh.. at least thats what I am hoping lol In the summertime their soft serve ice cream is super good.. but if you are in the Melrose park area and have a hankering for se quality fast food, definitely stop by and grab you some hot dogs and a large root beer! I ordered a Grilled Chicken Salad, it was pretty tasty! Love the fact Lucky Dog uses romaine lettuce and slipped in some swiss cheese in the mix. The Chicken was cut more in a cubed shaped evenly spread through the salad for maximum chicken consumption. The salad was made fresh to order and the wait was quick. They have practically everything, but the Gyro is the king. Out west where I am now, they are not as well versed in Gyrodom. Lucky Dog has a great sauce on theirs, and it may run a little bit (I always asked for extra), but it makes their gyro perfect. You really need not go anywhere else for one.
