The first thing that stood out to me about The Lunch Box was the prices. It's a little hole-in-the-wall sandwich shop with old-school charm, and it's hard to beat how affordable everything is nowadays. The service was great as well. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and our food came out quickly. I ordered a turkey club while my dad got one as well, and unfortunately we both had the same issue. The turkey was on the dry side, and it was sliced much thicker than I personally prefer. I tend to like a thinner deli-style sliced turkey, so it just wasn't my favorite sandwich. My mom ordered one of the salads though, and honestly it looked better than my sandwich. It was loaded with fresh toppings, and she said the ranch was excellent. If I come back, I'd probably skip the sandwich altogether and give one of the salads a try. Overall, I can definitely appreciate what they're going for. The prices are fantastic, honestly unheard of in present day, and that's the main reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 3. The craving for a cheesesteak was strong as I scoured the listings on Yelp. According to reviews, The Lunchbox was one of the best there was. So I jumped in my car and drove to West Bottoms, a less than desireable, industrial area. There, I found a little corner store. I go in and walk up to the counter and say, "I hear I can get the best cheesesteak in KC here." The gentleman shakes his head and takes my order. Cheesesteak, add lettuce and tomato. Ten minutes later, I'm walking out with the daily special that included my sandwich, fries and a nice strong Orange Crush from the fountain. I am starving, so I rip open the bag, determined to devour it right there on the side of the street. The first sign of disappointment was the size. Maybe 6" but no more. Maybe I'm used to the footlong portions of Atlanta, but this was leaving a lot to be desired. I forgive it because maybe this is the size for the special. (Shrug) I take my first bite and get a mouthful of well-seasoned meat. But where is the cheese? I try another bite, thinking that maybe the end just was missing it. Nope, still no evidence of cheese. It takes me until midway through the sandwich before I reach the gooey cheese that makes a cheesesteak great. As I was eating my sandwich, I grab a few fries. Eh. Hand cut, which is good, but they have a slightly rancid burnt flavor. Like the grease has seen one too many days. And the lack of salt just elevated the off-flavor. I quickly abandon them and get back to the sandwich. I look down, but there is hardly anything left. Three bites and I am at the end...minus cheese. I'm left with bread ends, a few pieces of meat and a ton of lettuce and tomato. Sigh. Overall, I give the sandwich a 6/10. The meat was flavorful, but the size and the lack of cheese left me wanting more. The fries...let's not even rate them in this review or we will definitely be doing less than 3 stars. The redeemer? That crisp, delicious Orange Crush. Thank you God for soda...or as Midwesterners say, pop. (lol) Would I go back? Maybe. I would see if there is a 12" version and I would ask for EXTRA cheese and emphasize that I would love it to be spread across the whole sandwich. And I would skip the fries. To be fully honest, had the reviews not been so high and this place not been on my list to try for so long, after seeing the outside I'm pretty sure I would have passed and moved along. All of that being said, I'm glad I ventured inside and gave it a chance, as looks can be deceiving! The first thing you'll notice is that it's counter service only and no indoor (or outdoor) seating. This was a bit of a bummer since we were out and about that day, but not a deal breaker for us. I ordered a breakfast burrito with chorizo and my friend had a burger. The total price for both was around $20 before tip which was kind of mind boggling for me in today's economy where I feel like it's not uncommon to get ONE burrito for around that price. Despite the divey, outside of my comfort zone atmosphere, the folks working were some of the kidnest, friendliest folks I've encountered in a while. Our food came out hot and fresh, they gave me ample salsa, and it was GOOD. Honestly great breakfast burrito. The burger I was told was also top notch. I found a delicious lunch spot in The Lunch Box. It's takeout only, so be prepared for that. After looking at the menu, which had a lot of tasty-sounding options, I ordered a pork tenderloin. I requested a special order with my preferred toppings, and they happily obliged. This sandwich was one of the best tenderloins I've had in a while. Today i called in and ordered a philly (meat cheese only) & order of tots. Picked up my order, the philly had peppers & onions. They reluctantly remade it. When i got to my car the next time- my philly was sopping grease. I understand phillys will have grease- but i could ring the grease out of the bread like a wet rag. When i went back in to ask them to remake it once again- they said "they (my husband & I) always do this it's ridiculous" (i've had my food remade 3 times before today. 1. Had onions & peppers 2. Had a long blonde hair in it 3. Was soppy greasy (like today) but they were extremely apologetic & blamed it on a new cook) I chose to ignore it & waited outside on my new philly. The biscuit was dense and stuck to my teeth and roof of my mouth and had a strong flour taste. The gravy was thick and I only tasted flour and some pepper. Unclear if there was sausage in there. I maybe saw a few small pieces, but it was a pretty wimpy sausage gravy. Maybe just an off day, but the menu touts that the biscuits and the gravy are both homemade. Shop around for Bud Light tall boy or some cat food while you wait. Our sandwiches came out quick and hot, and they were perfect after a night of drinking.
