The Lunch Box is the most hole in the wall, hole in the wall that KC has to offer. It's a sandwich shop nestled inside a fairly sketch looking convenience store in the West Bottoms. To be fully honest, had the reviews not been so high and this place not been on my list to try for so long, after seeing the outside I'm pretty sure I would have passed and moved along. All of that being said, I'm glad I ventured inside and gave it a chance, as looks can be deceiving! The first thing you'll notice is that it's counter service only and no indoor (or outdoor) seating. This was a bit of a bummer since we were out and about that day, but not a deal breaker for us. I ordered a breakfast burrito with chorizo and my friend had a burger. The total price for both was around $20 before tip which was kind of mind boggling for me in today's economy where I feel like it's not uncommon to get ONE burrito for around that price. Despite the divey, outside of my comfort zone atmosphere, the folks working were some of the kidnest, friendliest folks I've encountered in a while. Our food came out hot and fresh, they gave me ample salsa, and it was GOOD. Honestly great breakfast burrito. The burger I was told was also top notch. I think if they created a dine-in area it would be a hit and more likely for my return, but as it is I would come back if in the area and wanting something to go as the food was great. ** adding a caveat down here as I do see some photos with seating so maybe I just missed it? If that's the case maybe some more clear signage. To be fair, I could have asked! Still a great spot though and I'd recommend if you're in the Bottoms.

    Pork The Giant Tenderloin Sandwich

I found a delicious lunch spot in The Lunch Box. It's takeout only, so be prepared for that. After looking at the menu, which had a lot of tasty-sounding options, I ordered a pork tenderloin. I requested a special order with my preferred toppings, and they happily obliged. This sandwich was one of the best tenderloins I've had in a while. I'm glad I didn't order a side because I was so full I wouldn't have had room. I'd love to comeback and try the cheesesteak.

The folks behind the counter were very friendly and helpful. I placed my order for a double cheeseburger. It was ready in about five minutes, hot and fresh. This place has a lot of character, but no chairs or tables; you will not be dining in. I had a delicious cheeseburger in my car. They have plenty of other things besides hamburgers and sandwiches. They have hotdog as well and drinks, chips, beer, cocktails, and a decent selection of liquor. There was a ton of foot traffic here during my visit on a Friday night around 9 PM. They're doing a good business. They're also serving some excellent food and taking care of their customers.

my 3rd philly they made, still sopping grease. yummy

I would actually like to go back on my review. I love Lunch Box, the food is great. I live close and have been there 30 times in the last 3 months but after yesterday i probably will never go back. I'm currently super super super pregnant & crave phillys. I LOVE the philly at the lunchbox.. Anytime i've had issues they've always been handled well. Today i called in and ordered a philly (meat cheese only) & order of tots. Picked up my order, the philly had peppers & onions. They reluctantly remade it. When i got to my car the next time- my philly was sopping grease. I understand phillys will have grease- but i could ring the grease out of the bread like a wet rag. When i went back in to ask them to remake it once again- they said "they (my husband & I) always do this it's ridiculous" (i've had my food remade 3 times before today. 1. Had onions & peppers 2. Had a long blonde hair in it 3. Was soppy greasy (like today) but they were extremely apologetic & blamed it on a new cook) I chose to ignore it & waited outside on my new philly. When i went back in to pick it up a woman came from the back (a cook) and said "you come in here and complain all the time. we can't keep remaking your food. if you don't like the food we'll give you a refund and don't come back" when i tried to explain that the first time it was made wrong (your bad) & the second time it was sopping grease & that i am super pregnant & drinking grease makes me sick she said "if you don't like our food don't come back" i love yalls food, that's why im waiting for it to be remade. i want the food i ordered right.. but your customer service is sh!t.

The people in here are always super nice and they always have stuff that other gas stations don't. Not to mention their food is so good, even though I didn't get food this go around! 10/10 gas station!

This review is for late lunch on a Friday in late July. service: Order at the counter. Everyone is nice, quick, and helpful. It's electronic payment from card or phone, so it's easy and fast. bar: All the big 'merican beers in cans, tall boys, and six packs in half dozen coolers. Lots of bottles behind the counter. Everything priced just right. food: Serious old school grill place. Think Town Topic or any other favorite spot. Burgers, cheesesteak, and tenderloin all highly recommended. For this visit, I went with plain burger and fries ($7.25 as of 07/2025) plus fries which are not to be missed ($3.25 as of 07/2025). details: West Bottoms, so don't be put off by neighborhood. Street parking around the building. Place is kinda bodega or neighborhood grocery, so you can get all manner of packaged food. No tables, this is take away food at its finest.

Definitely a spot if you get those late night munchies. Got a simple pork tenderloin sandwich - it was tiny bit over cooked in my opinion, but not quite burnt. Still tasted perfectly good overall. It's a big slab of pork tenderloin - it'll fill you up. Can't complain for the price and what I got. Compared to Kitty's cafe, I prefer kitty's - but at the same time, kitty's isn't open till 1:30am. I ordered as a pick up order and my food was ready when I showed up after about 10-15 minutes. There's no real seating - the lunch box is basically built into a convenience store, so you walk in, grab your food, and that's about it.

The Big West Bottoms Trucker on the left, full order Bs&Gravy on right. Very delish. Very filling.

Went here on a whim and friends' recommendations. Food was very good. Got the Big West Bottoms Trucker and full order of Biscuits & Gravy. Both very good and filling. No tables, so it's all to go. Mini grocery/liquor/snack store. The girls at the front counter very nice, very attentive. Got my order quick, maybe about 10min, if that. Will def be going back on another day to get my grub on!!

Tucked away in the West Bottoms in an industrial area is this Corner store/liquor store/deli/ whatever. At 1:30 on a Tuesday this place was hoping! No indoor seating ... it's a grab and go We had the Cowboy burger and the chicken club. With sides of tater tots and hand cut fries. All servings are generous and prices economical. Now the Cowboy burger is NOT for the faint of heart! Very tasty and delicious however if you don't like HEAT, order without jalapeños. I literally broke out in a sweat!! They definitely don't use your average jalapeños! The chicken club comes either fried or grilled. We opted for grilled and I was thankful for the mayo on it to kill the burn in my mouth! Another very generous serving of chicken with lettuce, tomato, bacon and cheese. The hand cut fries were nicely seasoned and the tater tots crispy. Service was extremely fast.

    This is the Train Wreck.

Holy Gutbuster. This diner grill / deli / whatever in a liquor store is something else. I've only visited for breakfast, which is served in heaping portions. Seriously, you can turn your order into two or three meals. You'll find a menu full of sandwiches, burritos and creative concoctions. Examples include the Big West Bottoms Trucker (Sausage, bacon, ham, eggs & cheese piled high on a toasted hoagie roll, topped with mayo, lettuce and tomato.) and the Train Wreck (Full order of biscuits & gravy topped with hash browns, two sausage patties, two fried eggs with your choice of hot sauce, or salsa.) The food is perfectly acceptable, however could have used more flavor. Especially the sausage and gravy. It's good, but it could be better. One small note, this restaurant does not have seating. It is carry out only.

This is no swanky place, I'm giving them a hardy 4 stars for the food, service and variability of goodies all in a one stop shop. You need work gloves, how about batteries, little frozen drink balls at 15% alcohol, snoop dog potato chips....they got you. Quality food, fresh and hot at an affordable price...yep. They are not snooty and overcharge you. The fries are FIRE and I wonder if they soak in brine, so good! The Philly was perfect; soft, cheesy, meat melts in your mouth, and let's not forget the B.A.D. (Big arse drink), iced sprite went down smooth. I loved everything about the experience. The dudes sitting out front, the beautiful mural on the side of the building, the pit bull waiting in line with his owner who could not wait to let us pet him as he wildly wagged his tail. The service was great and people in line were quick to tell us what they loved on the menu. The ONLY thing I would add is picnic tables and ice cream cones, summer business would BOOM. We will be back, with friends, and our out of town guests. This is the kind of place that embodies the Midwest, Kansas City, and the West Bottoms, it's this unique eatery that sets us apart. This Lunch Box has something for everyone!

But they don't just do pizza, there is an array of sandwiches, burgers, and of course their famous wings (beware of the Death Wings, like, REALLY beware). The kitchen is pretty much right in front of you and pies are getting slung constantly. That Rockin' Red sauce has that rich tomato base and it goes perfectly with that toasted crust flavor that only a pizza oven can provide. Toppings are seemingly anything (I'm a sucker for fresh mozz & meatballs) and while one slice is enough for many, two is just a sweeter spot. Beer on tap flows with local, regional, & known brands. The drink menu is pretty lengthy and beers will rotate with the seasons. If you're unsure on what you want, then your friendly server is very likely going to give you some good options. The whole place seems to be held together by stickers & customer 'art', so it gives Grinders a divey atmosphere but delivers a five-star product. Parking is Crossroads, pricing is reasonable but the value is far more than the price point(s), and there's a reason this place gets national exposure. It's that good. And if weather allows, then eat out back. Underrated KC patio.
