4.5 stars Full disclosure: We received a complimentary room upgrade to a Junior Suite at check-in and were placed in the room located directly above the hotel's main entrance. We were also treated to a complimentary sample of sweets in celebration of our honeymoon. The Malton does "historical hotel" right. It successfully achieves an elegant and vintage atmosphere without seeming "dated." The building itself makes a memorable impression covered in ivy surrounded by beautiful gardens. The Malton is an oasis in the heart of Killarney - within walking distance of all the shops and pubs. The room was gorgeous and the bathroom was supplied with modern amenities that still kept that classic touch. It's worth noting that the hotel does not have air conditioning, but we still found our room to be comfortable. Our only complaint about the room is that it is a little noisy (because of its location about the entrance, no doubt.) Breakfast included the typical array of pastries, meats, and cheeses, but also featured a made-to-order hot food menu with ample variety. The Belgian waffle was worth noting - it was coated in cinnamon and every bite was scrumptious. (It's a bit small though - order 2!) Unfortunately, the restaurant is not managed very well during breakfast. You must wait to be seated by a host, who may then take your order for coffee/tea and toast to pass along to your server - which really slows the seating process. The dining room is tightly packed, making it a little difficult for wheelchairs or strollers to maneuver. (Even on foot, winding your way to the buffet can be difficult.) Arriving early in Killarney for a meeting, we popped into the first place we came to which is literally on the doorstep of the railway. Not literally literally but you know what I mean. Three lattes with scones later in an elegant lounge area reeking with character as a former Great Southern railway hotel, we moseyed off to our meeting resolving unanimously to return for lunch before our afternoon train if time permitted. Which it duly did. Steak sandwiches for two and salad for the sad vegetarian were deemed excellent. As it was Friday and we'd had a productive meeting I awarded myself a beer. At 2 in the afternoon. Such decadence. Thus replenished we boarded our train back to the shmoke. If the rest of the hotel is anything like the food in the restaurant I will definitely stay here should the opportunity present. Excellent. read more

Let's start by saying the only kind of sister property this place is to The Hayfield Manor in Cork would be a step-sister. The Malton has potential but is seriously mismanaged. Let's start with check-in. Concierge was lovely and friendly, front desk staff, not so much. Room wasn't ready and we were asked to come back in 30 minutes. No overview of the property or amenities was offered, so we were left to fend for ourselves. Next up, the room. Small and hot. This room was certainly never in any of the pictures we saw about this hotel. Included a small bed for our child, which was nice. If you have valuables or prefer to lock up your passport, tough luck... no safe in room. Should have known something was odd when I saw the oscillating fan in the closet. Yep, room was an oven even with windows open and fan on high, we cooked all night. I actually think the heat was on but there is not a thermostat in the room for us to change. As for other things you would expect in a room such as, an iron, hairdryer or a working trouser press, nope. Nada. Not included. The bathroom was tiny and while we were a party of three, they generously gave us only two bath towels and one hand towel. There wasn't even a tissue box cover, just generic tissues in their cardboard box. Now on to the staff. The concierge was the highlight of the hotel. She was pleasant and friendly and greeted us by name each time she saw us. She must be on loan from the Hayfield Manor because it was the only element that resembled similar service. Had a casual dinner in the pub. Food was good but they were understaffed. Nothing good or bad about the breakfast, again seemed understaffed. The property is conveniently located within walking distance of the town. The lobby and sitting areas were nicely decorated and welcoming. I'd recommend skipping the pool unless you basically want to sit in a sauna overlooking chemical and electrical closets. read more

I really had a fantastic experience at The Malton. Room was very comfortable, and clean. However, not exactly without signs of wear (marks on doorframe, older tv) these were all cosmetic, not very important in my opinion. What was important to me was strong WiFi (free), great service, comfortable setting, location - all of these were met. Especially have to commend the concierge and bar staff, they all went above and beyond - fantastic! read more

I took advantage of a midweek break special and headed down from Dublin by train. The Malton Hotel is right outside the station and has a great history attached to it. Now where to start, the staff are lovely, friendly and courteous from the manager to the porter. We booked into our very spacious room with a large dressing area, sitting area and bathroom. Breakfast was a very extensive buffet, with the usual cereals, fresh fruits, cold meats, selection of cheeses, yogurts, fruit juices, fish etc. followed by a selection of hot breakfast options. I opted for buttermilk porridge which was delicious followed by poached eggs served with pancetta and toasted mufffin. The other half had the ful irish and it looked great. All produce is locally sourced and tea and coffee was served in pots. We spoiled ourselves with a high tea and weren't disappointed. Minature sandwiches, cakes and pastries served with our pots of coffee was delightful. I felt very decadent! The dinner was wonderful and the wine selected for us by a sommelier was a perfect accomaniment to our selected dishes. The amuse bouche, sorbet and petit fours were a pleasant surprise and a wonderful touch to a lovely dining experience. I opted for a hydrotherapy bath in the hotel spa along with a pedicure. I would recommend both but booking is essential. The hotel is very central to everything and walking distance from town centre. If you want a treat then you could do worse than booking in here! read more

I came here as a part of a guided tour. Initial thoughts were the hotel was nice and room comfortable. Then came time to sleep on the first night. I was put in the original part of the hotel, where there seemed to be a lack of insulation. The guy in the room next door snored so loud, I could not sleep at all the first night. When I called down to the front desk to inquire about getting a new room around 3am. The front desk associate told me there wasn't one available. I then walked around the hotel, seeing I couldn't sleep, to find multiple rooms with their shades open and no one inside. When the manager came in that morning, they were puzzled why I didn't get a new room... Now the new room was very nice in the new part of the hotel. I would highly recommend staying in a newer room, unless you plan on bringing ear plugs. I also had room service. After hours the front desk takes the order. The lady on the phone seemed very annoyed to be taking a food order at 9:30pm at night. When the food arrived, it was literally pieces of cold chicken on two pieces of bread. Nothing to write home about. I would not return to this hotel on a future trip as I do believe there are better options in the area. read more

The Malton was probably my least favorite hotel during my Ireland trip. The exterior looked impressive enough and first impressions were high. Parking was free and the front staff were helpful, giving me vouchers for free afternoon tea and a free dinner for two I had included in my package. Upon reaching my room, was the beginning of my disappointing stay. The finish around the door frame on the inside of my room looked like someone took a crowbar and tried to pry their way out of the room. The TV was a 20 year old 20" CRT, not the typical flat screen shown on their website and seemed to have a dead remote. The light quality poor and the bed/pillows seriously way too firm. The bathroom was decent enough on the other hand. Also the free wi-fi only seems to cover the ground floor and part of the second floor. Seeking refuge from the poor quality room, I went for afternoon tea. Wandering around trying to figure out how to get my tea, the bar tender finally told me to wait in the lobby for someone to take my order. Out in the lobby, out of three fireplaces, only the one by the front door was lit. Five minutes later a staff member took my order. The afternoon tea was just dismal in nearly all aspects. The coffee I had was decent enough, but the sugar bowl had brown sugar cubes on top of what looked like a moisture ridden pile of slightly stuck together crushed cubes. The sandwiches were not the least bit elegant and the pastries were not the least bit delicious. Even the chocolate was a disappointment. Thank god it was free. The next morning I gave the included breakfast a go. I ordered the Belgian waffle and got a lopsided waffle about 3" x 4". It had these lumps of sugar about 1/8" in diameter which hurt to bite into. The buffet was not very interesting otherwise and I promptly left to eat at a local cafe. Again, thank god it's "free." Overall, not a pleasant stay. This place seems heavily bent towards an older local crowd. If you're under maybe 50, avoid this place and go to a smaller more interesting hotel. Pros: -Free parking. -Free Wi-Fi in lobby. -Includes a lot for the money compared to other places (though low quality). Cons: -Low quality food items. -Uncomfortable. -Not nearly as nice as rooms shown on their website. -Poor finishes. -Fireplaces not lit on cold days. read more

You pay enough for a room yet still get charged for parking! Wouldn't mind if parking was limited; however, there are hundreds of spaces. Talk about squeezing every last cent out of the customer. I must say the majority of the staff are great. The place just seems totally understaffed, it is a disgrace. I heard the new owners are notorious for this. It says a lot when every staff member I asked spoke negatively about them! Such a waste of money staying here. Shame as it has great potential only for the greedy owners. read more

A former Great Southern hotel, still quite posh but not at all stuffy. The fireplace in the entry sets the tone, as do the elegant and spacious public rooms. Tastefully furnished & well appointed rooms feature wonderful beds, so comfortable. The 6 acres of grounds are beautifully landscaped. Staff was unfailingly helpful and welcoming. Breakfast was a treat, such tasty choices. Stay here, unwind and enjoy! read more

An exceptional hotel! The level of service at this beautiful hotel that opened in the 1870s is world class. Helpful, friendly staff. The restaurant is superb - white-tablecloth service. The breakfast menu has unique offerings, such as the Bulls Eye, sunny side-up eggs on toast with mushroom ketchup and "bacon" (ham slice), with a delightful tomato vinaigrette. We had dinner- perfectly prepared rack of lamb and a splendid 10-oz strip steak (local beef that's range-fed rather than pen-fed, so meat is a bit tougher and more intensely flavored than we're accustomed to in the States). The bar is excellent; best Irish Coffee this side of the Buena Vista. I can't say enough about the staff. Whether in the restaurant, bar, concierge, housekeeping or front desk, everyone we encountered went out of his or her way to ensure our stay was the best imaginable. read more

The Hotel was amazing, loved my room! Beautiful place! The only complaint I have is the service. Not very helpful. When we checked in, we had to find the front desk person, no bellman- were not very helpful on what Killarney has to offer! 2 American gals had been on the road for 6 hours and needed a rest. This hotel was beautiful. The breakfast included, was wonderful and overlooked a beautiful garden. The door was always held, the car moved , the needs met. The price was great for what we received. Comfort and great service. Better yet, I left a sweater behind. I got a call at home my first day back in the states and they had my sweater and are mailing it to me. Drinks next to the fireplace in the bar was perfect on a cold, wet day. We met very nice fellow travelers there. I really recommend this hotel. read more

Only called in here for a quick drink and a bite but ended up staying for a few hours as the atmosphere was so relaxed and the staff were fantastic. very friendly and know how to make the customers feel so relaxed. special mention to Nikki and Evan who were working behind the bar while I was their. an absolute credit to the hotel and to bar work. read more

The hotel seemed a little old and rundown when we checked in, but the rooms are beautiful and very well kept! The bathrooms are gorgeous. We loved the wine and whiskey tasting although we felt like the only ones at the hotel that enjoyed them. Continental breakfast was delicious. You cat beat the location either, it is within walking distance to everything in the town. My only complaint was the pillows, they were flat and hard, we asked for different pillows and none were available. read more

We arrived today in unseasonably hot, humid weather. The 4th floor room we were given had no a/c, no refrigerator, and a old portable TV. After complaining, we were moved to a larger 1st floor room that at least had a flat screen TV and a refrigerator. Okay, so it got better. The room has the smallest shower in the universe and the outlets for the lamps are a configuration that my adaptor will not work in, so unless I want to sleep on the floor I cannot use my c-pap machine to sleep. It's now quite late and I cannot sleep. On the up side, the staff has been marvelous and dinner was amazing. I guess I can think about that while I lay here frustrated and awake. read more

This hotel is STUNNING and looks exactly as it is presented in pictures. I absolutely loved that our room/suite was very spacious and had a Christmas tree + a clawfoot bathtub! It is located very close to shops and dining, and the hotel is impeccably clean and looked after. Our room also had a balcony that overlooked their beautiful green grounds. Their complimentary breakfast is very filing and you have loads of options to choose from. I was also thankful to find complimentary sweets when we arrived for our honeymoon. We also had free parking. I highly, highly recommend The Malton if you're staying in Killarney. read more

Stayed at a few other hotels while on holiday in Ireland. BY FAR this exceeded all others. It was breath taking. Everything. Our room literally looked like something out of a Disney movie as corney as it sounds. So extravagant. The rest of the hotel was beautiful and unique. It was decorated for Christmas and all of the fireplaces were lit. Amazing atmosphere. Just like another hotel we stayed at, there were active wedding/parties occurring. However, UNLIKE the other hotel, the staff here still treated us and other guests with the upmost attention. Everyone was well taken care of and made sure comfort was there. I found the service overall impeccable. Not to mention, the food was very good. The hotel is situated in a perfect spot in town. Walkable to everything, yet, back enough that it isn't super busy feeling. I have NOTHING negative to say about the Malton. Honestly, was upset to leave and move to another location in Ireland. I would have been content staying the full two weeks here! Just wonderful. Thank you to all the staff for your expert service and warm welcome. I hope to get back at some point in my life again.
