I hired The Manely Firm, P.C. for an uncontested guardianship case. The child's mother fully cooperated, and there was no dispute. Before I retained them, I specifically asked about the cost, and I was told it would not exceed $7,000. However, despite the case being simple and not even concluded yet, they issued an invoice of $15,000 -- more than double the amount they originally estimated. Because of this excessive and unexpected billing, I had no choice but to terminate their services. The lack of transparency and disregard for their own estimate is extremely disappointing. I was very disappointed with the handling of my mother's estate. We were passed between multiple people, and it did not appear that any meaningful work was ever done on our case. This situation was especially disappointing because my mother was an employee, and the firm offered to assist us pro bono. Despite that offer, we received little to no help and ultimately had to hire another firm, which was able to resolve the issue. If I could give a zero I would. They charged over $20,000 to file one motion and go to court only to lose to someone who didn't even have an attorney. I had a witness that they didn't even call to testify. I had sent them tons of evidence and emails of other party they they charged me thousands to file and didn't even use one single document. Do not fall for their sales pitch they are only after money and could care less about the client. You will never get a response from them. You will never get any help from them any you definitely can't get a hold of the team as they call it, which several quit during my case. It was a simple case I might add. All I know is I paid approx $10k in fees to get about $10k in child support so it literally was a wash. And a waste of time - if y'all know something different y'all can send that check to the address on file cause I never received atty fees and clearly I asked for them (just try a flat fee based attorney in my opinion) I won my own case because I had my child support order and log of payments received and not received. This firm seems hellbent on getting someone killed. They make a practice of scouting potential clients by looking through public records of divorces that have been petitioned but not yet served, and then reach out to the person being sued for divorce, preemptively trying to get their business. Imagine what will happen to someone in an abusive marriage who is trying to discreetly plan their escape, only to have these jerks inform their abuser of their intent to divorce. 75% of all women who are murdered in domestic abuse cases are killed after initiating their departure. This firm is worse than ambulance chasers they are ambulance causers. They are the only firm in town that does this shady practice as every other firm agrees it's highly unethical. One could assume that if these guys were any good at their job they could gain business by less desperate, untactful measures. Edited to add: There is no realistic way to "screen" for domestic abuse, and yes, in my friends case, you sent this directly to her unstable abuser and it's just lucky she wasn't there when we received it. So much domestic abuse goes unreported, that any attempt at screening is paltry. You will cost a woman her life someday, it's only a matter of time. They make all kinds of promises up front, spend your first two installments of $5,000 ($10,000) within the first two weeks, and, when you go to give them your last $5k to continue to "protect," you, and you have to tell them you're out of money and can no longer afford them, they attempt to us every penny of your last $5k in a "trust," which they will not release until 2 months have passed, not from the time you "fire" them, but from the time they Finnish doing work on your behalf. Nightmare experience with them. Worst off, ALL they have to show me, after that first & $10,000 is a letter they wrote on my behalf, that didn't stand up in the court of law, either! I could go on and on, like, when you look very closely at your itemized bill, they charge you $12.50 for every time something is filed (not in a court of law) in a filing cabinet, or even via email. I had more anxiety over working with the lawyers than with getting through my divorce and it should have been an open and shut case, no kids, no home (renters), and he was arrested for domestic abuse and felony stalking and after $30,000 we didn't even have a court date and I had to switch lawyers to get anything done. They also started with serving him with discovery when he had a TPO and no access to his computer or files. This Firm has nothing but blood sucking vultures!!! I spent over $40k on my divorce. My attorney and paralegal stressed me more than my own divorce. They billed you for EVERYTHING, I mean ABSOLUTELY Everything. They would email you questions then bill you for the questions and your response. They would ask you the same question again and bill you for it. I asked questions got billed for the question but never received the answer. They were not friendly at all. They made me feel as though I was Doing them a favor. Now mind you over $40k i spent. I had to call at one time because my old paralegal quit I was not informed. I started with one attorney and out of nowhere ended up with a new one. Again no one reached out to me weeks went by. But guess what? Yep I got a bill. I wanted to find a new firm but I knew I would be spending more money to start over. I should have just taken that chance. My divorce has been over about 3-4 weeks the case is closed. I received the email and copy of the divorce decree. But guess what again?? Yep I received 3 more bills since then now mind you my case is CLOSED RIGHT??!!!! I wish I had never hired this firm, and I'm not usually one to complain on thing slike this. But it has been an exhausting, frustrating, very slow and disappointing experience. This firm is extremely disorganized and overpriced. On my legal team, the left hand never knew what the right hand was doing. The rotating cast of paralegals were always confused about everything. The attorney was not very reachable (no voicemail box either), the front desk was beyond rude, and I was billed for basic admin tasks that they tried to pass off as billable legal work. The paralegals were always asking me for the status of my own case, instead of the other way around. Their emails to me were often full of typos and things that didn't make sense. My emails to them requesting status updates were usually ignored. So I usually had to write them 2-4 times before I got an answer. The attorney would say they would send stuff to me but often I did not get it, so then I had to write them to remind them of what they said they would send, etc etc. Who has time for this? Unacceptable, when bill rates are $550/hr. I don't expect perfection, but this whole experience was disappointing. I finally got tired of their nonresponsiveness, lost confidence in them, and decided to switch to another firm to clean everything up. And even after I requested this switch and they confirmed my request, it still took Manley over a month to transfer the records. And I still have not received the balance of my retainer. The receiving firm was puzzled why it took this long and tried to help out. It took multiple emails from them and me, over and over, to try to get this resolved. This is not a satisfactory business expectation. Although changing firms is an inconvenience, I decided that it was still better to ensure everything was done thoroughly rather than risk getting poor work and have legal problems later. Manley had my case for 2 years but they still never finished my basic probate and estate case. Maybe they've made so much money that they don't need my case? I do not know. I have nothing positive to say about this firm. This firm represented my dad in his divorce case and recently withdrew from the case because my dad did not have any money left. Unfortunately this has not been their first attempt to withdraw from the case and they kept billing every single thing. I would call and ask questions about how the case is going and they would charge me for the questions I asked but not give me an answer. They also charged for reviewing the papers they previously reviewed, they will call my dad to ask him the same question he already responded and still charge for that. Not to mention that the attorney representing the case resigned right when they were drafting an agreement to put the divorce to an end. The new attorney took a month and a half to finish the agreement that we paid for and then did not send it because we didn't make a payment. This situation was very uncomfortable because we spent more than $15k and they did not even communicate everything to us. Every time I would call to make a payment the person taking the payment will have an attitude and be disrespectful. One time I called because I needed to talk with the attorney and instead the receptionist wanted to transfer me to the accounting department. There was only one person who always stayed very calm and nice every time I made a payment, I believe her name is Linda I would have preferred talking to her every time I made a payment. In My Opinion, THIS IS ABSOLUTELY THE WORST LAW FIRM I'VE EXPERIENCED!!! They take your $$$$ then they fail to hear what it is that you really want in the divorce process. They double charge you for something, such as full custody when I requested joint custody for my Son that is 24yrs old with special needs, even though the process is handled in Probate Court. The Manely Firm dismissed me as a client, because I disputed the second charge. Now they are ignoring my calls, also when I contacted the office the referred to accountant dept, but they are only responsible for giving me the information the attorneys authorized them to use, my issue is with the attorney for submitting the incorrect invoice for processing, and my attorney VERY RUDE telling me that we are not on the same page because they did not want to retract the second charge that they double charged me on. The Firm edited my account TWICE on the Custody matter which needed to be handled ONLY in PROBATE COURT, Therefore nothing should have been edited or charged. The accountant Department told me that I will not be able to get my refund until the 23rd of January in which that would have been 60 days later, NO ACTIONS AT ALL WERE INITIATED ON MY CASE when they dismiss me as a client, this is absolutely ludicrous. We went through three attorneys before we hired Michael to become the lead attorney on our case. Our case lasted two years and we learned so much in that time. You need to choose carefully when you are selecting an attorney. Some are out there just to get your initial payment, and once they get what they want they will avoid you like the black plague. There's also one's out there that just aren't on top of things, or aren't as responsive during critical times in your divorce. Michael is different. He responds to your emails at 10 pm and has conversations with you to ease your mind when you are being harassed. He coaches you on the proper conduct. Michael is an outstanding litigator and thinks outside of the box. Michael eases you through the process while creating the best case for your situation. When we first met with Michael, we were in bad shape. We lived out of state and and my girlfriend no longer had custody of her child.
