Loved it. Was on the New River Walk path when my little expressed hunger. Fortunately MT is not too busy midday Saturday as we had our pick of garden, front terrace or indoor seating. The service was super lovely, made me aware of a kids menu and we had the fish and chips and Marques burger. Both were delicious, came quickly, and overall a super positive experience. It didn't hurt that interiors are gorgeous and quirky, and cosy and tasteful. Would be happy to hang here equally on a rainy day as I would a sunny day. Will find excuses to be back in this neighborhood to drop in soon. read more

THEY HAVE GIANT YORKSHIRE PUDDINGS. Giant. Yorkshire. Puddings. I'll let that sink in. That being said you have to really like yorkshire puddings to deal with those. The rest of their roast was good as well. Good quality beef, nice veggies - except the potatoes, they were a bit dry. Their fish soup is delish, I highly recommend it, especially since they serve it the right way, with rouille (if you've never had rouille, I highly recommend it that too) and big croutons. Roasts are around £15 (so not that cheap, but it is the same price range everywhere in that area and it is worth it). The real charm of the place is probably its dining room though. Nice pub with outside area for sunny days, a fire place for cold days and board games. 3 stars for ambience. My beer was awful (only 2 on tap). My partners gin was delicious- but expensive (Camden gin). I think it's a good place to hang but gin seems to be the speciality rather than beer. read more

Great pub that has all the right ingredients. Victorian pub with inviting main bar room that is cosy yet spacious. Original wood panelled interior and have resisted the temptation to paint it beige (plus points for that). Good beers on tap and friendly staff. Relaxed vibe and low level music. The bar opens up to a spacious and high ceilinged dining area at the rear creating a very pleasant space. Food was delicious all around. They have a new head chef apparently. Look forward to enjoying a few drinks and eating here again. read more

It's ok. There is some super expensive foods for no reason at all. The house red wine was my highlight and there are many board games to chose from. In an area like Hagerstown I think there are better value places with more personality. I paid £4 for a side salad and got 150gms of lettuce. And the salmon starter dish comes out with some super lack lustre white one-day-old bread. The pulled pork burger looked like the menu highlight but quite ex-y again. The vego linguini option seems like a last minute menu addition. Apparently the gazpacho was delicious. I feel like the most recent renovation/redecoration of the space is a bit clunky but it is a good space to cater for bigger groups. Beer line up ok. Gin line up excellent. Mmmm sipsmith. read more

Awesome pub - quiet, great food and the friendliest staff you'll ever find in a London boozer. I came here with a couple mates who are sick of all the east end pub bollocks. I walked em through new river walk (nice little canal starting at st.pauls road) and we plotted ourselves here for a lazy afternoon of burgers and the freshest of larger. Closing soon for refurbishments over July '13 so looking forward to when they reopen. Highly recommend this pub! read more

Have now eaten here and it was great. We had lamb which was cooked two ways - part roasted and part slow cooked and presented in a pastilla. The lamb was tender and succulent although (if I was being super critical) the lamb in the pastilla could have packed a bit more punch. The dish was completed with mash and greens which were fine but a bit non-descript. Only downside was that the menu didn't mention the mash and greens which came with the dish. As a result we ordered colcannon and some greens on the side. While perfectly nice, these did feel slightly redundant. Ideally we would have been warned when ordering but no biggie - I still love it here. read more

A classy boozer. From the terrace of the Marquess Tavern you can see both the 70's council flats of Dalston and the million pound terrace houses of Islington. In a similar meeting of worlds, the Marquess attempts to combine a cozy pub with a an up-market restaurant. Does it succeed? Kinda. Taking the pub part of the equation first: It serves a number of good ales and a huge range of whiskies. It ain't cheap, but it's only marginally above par for Islington. There's a ram-shackle collection of wooden tables and chairs, and a few picnic tables outside. It's got a nice, laid-back vibe. Next to the restaurant section. It's pricey. Not gastro-pub pricey, but mid-to-high-end restaurant pricey. The food, however, is excellent. Particularly if you like simple-cooked British food, especially game: There's a very turn-of-the-century feeling to the menu. So a great pub and exquisite food, but I'm not convinced either really benefits from the presence of the other. read more

One of my FAVOURITE spots in London by far. Not only the location is just downright romantic (close to canonbury walk), but the design of the place is agreeable, soft and warm. Of course it has a secret - not so anymore :D - garden. The Sunday roast is out of this world. Staff always incredibly nice and welcoming. And there is the marquess sundae... To die for... read more

This former North London pub of the year has been recently taken over by some former customers. It sounds like a great story doesn't it! Now I don't know how good it was back when it won the award, I had not long been of drinking age and had only spent fleeting moments in the centre of London, but I felt a bit let down by what I encountered when I came here recently. They are still serving Young's alesso I guess they are not free of that tiejust bitter and special when I visitedneither of which were actually that special. It looks quite upmarket and gastro, as is the trend these days. I won't completely rule out a return. It is not far from home and the bottled beer list certainly merits further perusal. read more

I thought this place had a lot of potential but it didn't really deliver. We went for Sunday roast and the potatoes were dry and the roast itself unimpressive. The plus side was that the service was great and really friendly. I'm hoping it was an offday and will probably go back to give it a second chance. read more

So, first things first -- on my visit The Marquess Tavern served up what must be the best pub roast dinner that I have ever eaten. It was what every roast should aspire to be -- generous, thick, hot, well-seasoned slices of flavourful pork, perfect crackling, decent roasties, and so on. It really was great. We opted for the two courses for £15 Sunday deal, preceding our roast nirvana with some decent starters. Mine was a concoction of asparagus, toast, poached egg and hollandaise sauce. All perfectly executed. So the food was great. What about everything else? Beer-wise, it's a Youngs house, serving only Youngs Bitter and Youngs Special on my visit -- neither particulalrly exciting beers, but well enough kept. I did spot the odd bottle of Brooklyn Lager in the fridge though. The wine that we bought to accompany our meal was pretty decent, and good value, if I recall correctly. The interior is a mixed affair, and there is a somewhat incongrous contrast between the wooden, traditional bar area and the white-tableclothed restaurant area. We preferred to eat in the bar area, but some might like the more formal restaurant section. Service was friendly and helpful, to the point that they re-opened the kitchen for us (having only recently closed it) on a Sunday evening. And I'm glad that they did. read more

I recently went to the Marquess for a wedding reception, and was bowled over by the wonderful staff, food and affordable prices. Considering it's Islington at its fanciest, the Marquess doesn't charge much for their drinks (just £3.20 for a large glass of wine), and the food was incredible, too. I had the trout, and thought it was so delicious. It's a really pretty pub, and I'll definitely be back for a Sunday roast soon. read more

Went for a Sunday roast and some pints of Guinness. The roast was good but average. Didn't taste very home made but was still very edible. The food came out very quickly so it must have been prepared very well in advance. The Guinness was excellent so my friend and I had 2 pints each. Went back a few days later with the hubby and was served by the rudest bar man. The Guinness was so flat and when we complained, he made a sarcastic remark and we ended up leaving even though we planned to have dinner there. Haven't been back since. Pity as the pub itself is quite nice. read more

One of the most unhelpful and unfriendly places I've been to in recent memory. I had hired a car by the hour and parked it up in an adjacent street. My phone had just run out of battery so I could not lock it. I had put my BROMPTON folding bike in the boot of the car and I cycled to the nearby pub to see if I could charge my phone for a couple of minutes. I went in with my Bike. Immediately I was greeted with "you can't come in with the bike". I folded the bike. I then asked if I could charge my phone "no you can't". I asked if they didn't have a USB charger as I had the cable. "No we don't. We only have one and the chef has it". Can we ask the chef if I can borrow it? "No they're doing a stock take". I then realised I had another phone and if I could access the Internet I could get the car company's number and call them. I asked for the password for the Wi-Fi and they gave it to me. I asked for a soft drink to have by the bar. "No, You have to sit at a table " I was told by a man I presume to be the landlord. I continued trying to solve my conundrum. "You have to move your bike. It's a safety hazard" said another woman to me (landlady). At that point I stepped outside and continued my day. It's a shame. It's a lovely location and it was a beautiful day. I have been there before. However the three people I had interaction with who worked there were unwelcoming, unhelpful, unfriendly and slightly aggressive even. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and put it down to all three of them having a bad day at once but I would say to anyone not to go there. It won't make your day better and it won't enhance your human experience. Forget its pretty location and go and find somewhere with nice people instead. read more

My parents lived in London for four years, supplanted from America to pursue the USA dream elsewhere. I took advantage of a free place to stay, and visited for weeks at a time, always making sure to hit up the Marquess. Granted, this review is from the point of view of an American, but i really love this place. The decor is difft, not all of the dark wood you may be used to, but light and airy. The food is delicious, especially if you head out for Sunday dinner. The roast and yorkshire puddings are the best I had. Good staff and out of the way locale allows for exploring new neighborhoods. I stopped into this quaint little pub one sunny afternoon after a long walk for a cheeky pimms and pudding. We sat in the sweet beer garden and indulged in one of the best sticky toffee puddings I've had in ages! We didn't have a roast but they looked delicious and weren't too expensive. Surprisingly good food at a laid back place--despite the presence of the Six Nations on TV. Can't have it all I guess. The rugby fans were typically polite. I went to the Marquess and spent over £300 on lunch for 4 with wine . We were greeted with a passive aggressive and frosty manager who forced us into table service although we wanted time to talk to the bar maid and discuss drink options. Later we were outside and watched as they told several people the other tables were booked up, however, nobody ever claimed them. A girl then insisted on sitting there but moving if someone came along, she was refused service and when another pair came who hadn't booked the manager tried to lie to the girl and say it was their table. She disputed this and was subsequently asked to leave the pub. It was absolutely shocking. The manager was aggressive to not only us and her but several people outside were complaining about her behaviour. She was even doing fake crying to the girl as she left. Horrendous read more

I have a few issues with this place. The first is that it used to be fantastic independent local pub, great food and a cute interior. It was then purchased by a chain, they made the interior super cheesy, generally soulless and then the food became god awful. It is so sad to see a place go this far down hill. It is such a waste of space in a good neighbourhood location. I was then shocked when my friend booked it for her birthday party, but she said she just picked it because it was a good location. She booked an area of 14 people on a Sunday, 2 weeks ahead and called to confirm a week before and 2 days before. The day of the party they cancelled on her less than 2 hours before the booking!!!! They had no good reason and told her so late there was no chance to book any other location. On top of that they were so rude they reduced her to tears. . .on her birthday. Marquess is great, there is really not much you can say that is bad about this humble little pub. It is a fashionable gastro pub in one of the quieter spots in Islington and still only 5-10 minutes from Upper Street! The dining area is stunning, high white walls, fresh flowers and a roof-set glass window and a chanderlier - but it is quite small - it'd be nice if it were bigger. The staff are very friendly and always happy to see us return. It is hard to resist the food, even when I've eaten - very tasty and probably the best price in the area - 2 main courses for £15!! There is a weekly pub-quiz on a Tuesday which brings in a lively bunch and is always good for a laugh with your friends and a great opportunity to meet new ones! read more

I think most of the staff are really nice and cool, but some are plain rude. The food is average depends what you order (mussels are great there) . Theres an empty bar and still you can't choose where to sit because there will be bookings coming and its already 9.30pm.. can't take away your food (even if you bring your own container lol had to clarify that...) because its their fault apparently if you get poisoned with the food after you take it with you... err... okay? Kitchen closes at 3pm till 5pm but 5 minutes before 3 kitchen is already closed (even though I called to see whats in the menu so I could place the lunch order on the phone before I arrive in case like this..... but they are too busy to tell me whats on the menu today, since the mussels were not) kitchens closed, bye (not even a question if id like any drink instead?)
