I came to The Maya Salon for a last-minute trim. After calling several salons trying to get a last minute appointment, this was the only place that had an opening. Finding the salon was easy and there was parking right out front, which made it even better. I stay in South Pasadena on weekends at my boyfriend's house, so I decided to give it a try. EJ was incredibly kind and welcoming. I arrived a few minutes early while he was finishing with another client, and he saw me right at my appointment time. He also offered drinks and snacks, which I really appreciated because I definitely needed the caffeine boost that day. He washed my hair and gave me the trim I desperately needed, removing all my split ends while still keeping my hair long just like I asked. I'm always nervous about losing too much length, but he really listened and delivered exactly what I wanted. His station was also very cute and calming, with plants around the mirror and a dream catcher. I deal with anxiety, so I really appreciated his relaxing energy during the appointment. I usually get my trims done in Beverly Hills with my longtime stylist, and I was pleasantly surprised that the price here was about the same -- $120, which is pretty standard for a good trim in Beverly Hills as well. Since I happened to be in the area, I thought "why not?" and I'm really glad I did because it turned out to be such a pleasant experience. read more

It's been over a year of getting my hair done every 6 weeks by Iris at the Maya salon and I feel like it took me 10 years to find her. I tried so many stylists to do bleach and tones on my thin hair over the years and there was always brassiness/yellow and tons of banding and breakage. I would spend 8+ hours at a salon only to leave incredibly discouraged, disappointed and typically in tears. Not with Iris! She is truly amazing at doing Platinum hair! She's so patient and is a bit of a wizard when it comes to figuring the best approach. Always patient, kind, super communicative and overall, just a joy to be around. She is honest; putting the integrity of your hair first and foremost. Her energy is so welcoming and calming but her work speaks for itself. It's just a major bonus that she's an amazing human! As for the salon- lots of easy, free, street parking in adorable South Pasadena. There's always snacks, drinks and espresso/coffee available for clients (with oat milk in the mini fridge!) They also have a cute little free library I've picked up some books from. The only thing tricky about the salon is there is no Receptionist- so when people walk in from the street and no stylists are in the front, they are a little confused and lost and will often ask a processing client for help. Not necessarily a negative but worth mentioning for new clients; just be patient and keep in mind most of the stylists rent the space so there isn't someone sitting at a front desk waiting to greet you. I am writing an update to my original review. It has taken one year for my hair to grow back after it was chemically burned at this salon - it was originally done in May 2023 and began snapping off in August of 2023 despite doing my best to protect it after I knew it was severely damaged. The trauma I endured after getting my hair done by Anabelle was so awful and her work is still up on this salon's Instagram. Below is my original review: I wish I went elsewhere. My hair is fried beyond belief and no amount of discounts or offers of free treatments could get me to go back. The amount of gunk left on my scalp was mortifying, it was so itchy and inflamed. I've had my hair bleached before and I knew something was going wrong when it was on for far too long. I don't recommend the place. My appointment was at 10 am on a Sunday morning, I expected to be there 4 hours - which is what it took to bleach my hair before - but I didn't leave until 6 pm. read more

Went in for a last minute cut color, because I just moved to the area and knew that was a bit risky but tried it anyway. Haircut was great, however I would be cautious going in as a blonde, or maybe just more communicative about your preferences. I went in with some platinum blonde pieces and had slightly yellowed that didn't really need touching up, but I asked if they could get lighter/colder and closer to white. I received an ash toner on top, which makes some sense, but the result is that my blonde pieces are darker. I would have preferred to stay warm platinum over this dirty blonde because I'm going for a black/white more alternative look. Now my hair is more processed than when I came in and a darker color and I don't think it can be fixed. Wish I had just gone for the hair cut, or just asked not to touch the bleached areas :/ Nice staff just not what I asked for and it will take months to get my natural hair to grow back. read more

I've been very sensitive about my hair lately and felt like a hot mess before walking into this Salon. I was very emotional and worried my hair wouldn't cooperate as it had been over a year since I had it colored due to hormonal changes, medications and a very obvious amount of hair loss. I was desperate for a change and wanted just any level of improvement from my dry, lifeless, fragile hair. Dennis not only lifted my spirits but gave me a realistic plan, something to build on and expert advice that I was able to see immediately. Some improvement came with more consistent effort but was well worth it. I changed my hair care routine and stuck with a regimen that has transformed my hair thanks to his advice. Dennis was also able to blend very old grown out highlights on my ends to a beautiful natural highlight and face frame while still keeping the integrity of my hair. I also had asked him to blend most of my grays away while still leaving some in order to grow out more naturally. Most importantly I'm now for the first time seeing new hair growth, a healthier less flakey scalp and thanks to his shampoo & conditioner recommendation my hair went from unmanageable frizz to strong, glowy and smooth again. Stylist didn't show up for the appointment. I texted with the stylist a week before, and gave pics of the hair I wanted, and my current hair. He made a time / date, and confirmed the price. The day of, I arrive at the salon and no one is there. Texted/called the stylist and the salon. No response. I waited 20min and left. The salon texted back before the stylist did, saying they were trying to track him down, but also couldn't get a hold of him. Stylist texted an hour after and apologized. The salon doesn't have a front desk and isn't manned by anyone. They are all independent stylists who just use the space. The space itself seemed nice enough. But too bad there wasn't a single stylist there on a Sunday, so can't say anything about whether they can do hair or not. But scheduling and punctuality are not the forte... Where do I even start? I contacted Rene to take my hair from dark brown to dark blonde on Sunday and by Monday night, I had my dream hair. After moving from NYC and ignoring my hair care and color for quite some time post-move, I found the The Maya right here in South Pasadena. The owner Azelle, sounds amazing, but she was booked for weeks. So I asked her to connect me w Rene, who is so amazing and talented! Rene was so patient, very knowledgeable, and made my hair look amazing. He asked me about my current hair, my wants and needs, and made recommendations accordingly. We ended up getting rid of the blonde balayage that I'd had for years, which dried out my Asian hair, and went for a chestnut brown that lightened tones that showed up in the sun! He also did a deep conditioning treatment for me and advised me on how we could color and treat my hair so that I could eventually get my desired color later on, in phases. How thoughtful! Even though I'd gone in w hair that just dried in my sleep, Rene's blowout made it look awesome, w bends and waves...so smooth and sleek! I highly recommend Rene and will be going back The Maya for sure. Having a hair expert who listens to what you want and what works for you matters a lot. The salon itself is really cool, w lots of light and recently updated stations, and serves as an art gallery for school-aged artists whose work is hung up all around for you to admire; even the stairs are getting a mural paint job! One of their product lines, Leaf and Flower, which is CBD-infused, smells really great. Rain has been my go-to hair stylist for years and I can always count on her to give me exactly what I'm looking for! I will often show her a mix of photos - bangs from one photo, length from another, and layers from another - and she somehow manages to achieve a haircut that hits all the marks every time! If I need a low maintenance haircut, she'll give me recommendations and make it happen. I also appreciate that she's always careful about cutting off too much length, she'll either start long and adjust or she'll show me exactly where she's gonna cut before doing it so I'm never in that situation where I'm regretting how much hair is gone. On top of being the best hair stylist I've had, she is such a sweet person, remembers small details about my life, and makes me look forward to getting my hair cut! Highly recommend going to Rain! I explained to her what I wanted and when I tell you she gave me exactly what I wanted!!! Hands down, I AM SHINING! First, she is super sweet and has great energy. She treated my hair like a precision surgeon, the technique, the focus, and not once did she pull a strand. She was incredibly gentle and took her time. She worked diligently to make sure my hair was as blonde as I asked, literally by hand on each strand!!! She explained everything she was doing and gave me great tips and recommendations. Not once did I feel she was trying to sell me anything just for the sake of selling products.
