I sat in Seans chair and we talked about Carolina Panthers, Fenway Park and the Red Sox and how much downtown Belmont is growing and how he stays booked and busy! Sean is a real pro! He has a depth of experience and knows how to cut, no matter your style of preference. He'll trim your facial hair and those bushy eye brows! A true barbershop. This barbershop is what barbershops used to be before all the chains ruined the haircutting experience. Every barber here is friendly, welcoming, and brings you in to the conversation that has been going on since they opened. They are skilled, ask questions, take their time, and leave you feeling like this was the haircut you've been trying to find everywhere else, but everywhere else just didnt....cut it (sorry for the horrible pun but I typed it before I thought about it and its too late to erase it now). I went into their Catawba Street location which was originally opened for walk-ins. They have now turned this location into a beauty salon experience as well. Appointments only, then they may possibly be able to squeeze you in. I walked in on a Thursday morning at 10:20am and there were 2 barbers, and only 1 was cutting hair (a little boy) with no others waiting. The other barber was sweeping up hair. I get no hello, how ya doing or anything. I sit down and wait 5 minutes. The one barber stopped sweeping and began looking through his books, which is fine. A few minutes later he puts on his smock and asks if I am "so-and-so" and I let him know I don't have an appointment. He then proceeds to let me know that he has an appointment and they can try to work me in. He then lets me know they are booked out for quite a while. I tell him "thanks anyway", that's because there was no one there but me, a paying customer that typically tips well. On the way out I ask about the appointment thing because I knew this site was originally opened FOR walk-ins. He proceeded to explain to me that the Barber industry has moved to an appointment model because it's more efficient and they aren't sitting around waiting for someone to come in. I kinda chuckled to myself because I was the only one there and I was waiting around 5-10 minutes before even recognized. There was no one there and it was on the half-hour so the appointment was obviously going to be a few minutes late. Explain how it's efficient again? I told him I understand and that I appreciated his time. Do know that barber shops are very efficient in a first come first serve basis as they are 10-15 minute cuts. Appointments for salons are very efficient for the customer because the ladies/men are typically getting a wash, cut, style, color, etc. which takes an hour plus. Also, when I was told the "Barber industry" has moved to an appointment model, I don't really buy this as true... the Belmont Barber Industry maybe. Go one town over and the "Barber industry" hasn't. I have another home in a nice mountain town and their barbers haven't either. Their beauty salons do of course. Overall nice people, but they lost business today based on my experience. It's not really a Barber shop in my book. Do they give good cuts? I'm sure. Past times there when they functioned on a barbershop model they did. But now both of their Belmont sites are more of a salon experience seeing they don't take walk-ins. Heck, I remember how nice it used to be at the actual Mercantile site when you waited. You got to know people, and they had guitars on the wall you could take down and play while you waited! You were downtown shopping and noticed you could use a haircut, you could walk in sit down and get a haircut when your turn came along. I'm sure my review won't hurt them and that isn't my meaning. For those looking for a "barbershop" to go to when you finally get a free minute from work and other tasks, may not want to go here to get a cut unless you can make an appointment for days or weeks away. read more

I absolutely love everything about this place. For a long time, I have been going to sports clips and felt like I was getting ripped off. At best, the haircut was okay. The MBC beats them by a long shot on the price. The products that they sell are even bigger and cheaper than the other company that I used to go to. Jamie, Allan, and the crew are all rock stars and give consistent haircuts. Which I also didn't get at the other place. Only thing I wish is that I started coming sooner. I am not looking forward to the day when I leave Belmont Abbey and can no longer come by. They are so good that I even recommended them to a teacher who was looking for a new haircut. Probably the best haircut I've had in years - thank you Allan! The location is a little out of the way off Main Street, but parking and access are easy. The shop was clean and well appointed. It had a professional but relaxed atmosphere and over all a very pleasant experience. I would highly recommend the shop if you want a great haircut or beard trim.
