I came to this place a few times while I lived in Abilene and had not been back for a while. We came Thursday for steak night. The meal was great. I ordered 2 sangrias. We were running late for our reservation and the cashier was not friendly or accommodating. I asked about a few menu items and she was short with me. Another person was kind enough to check if they were still making food. They should invest in something to help keep the flies away from your food. It's summer so the it's hard to manage but it is necessary because my husband had to swallow his food to avoid them and I was swatting flies the entire meal. It may be a great place for an event but their customer service sucks and they have questionable business practices. Our daughter paid a large amount for exclusive use of the venue for a photo shoot. When she arrived, the wedding party she was told wouldn't arrive for three more hours was there and she had to work around them to get photos taken. When she contacted the management, she was essentially told, "well, you got your pictures." They refused to refund any of her money and stopped responding to her. read more

This is a really dang cool spot for events I am sure of it. Its huge, with tons of space both indoors and outdoors. Truly a former grain mill converted to a winery and event center with quite a unique, rustic, but modern, western feel to it. I did not find the place super busy on the late afternoon evening I arrived but a yoga class was about to start soon in the adjacent room next to the main bar and check-out counters. I thought that was pretty cool that they do group yoga and wine tasting in that space. The tap/keg system they have here for wine is way cool! For the wine fanatic like me vs beer, I like seeing the priority to the wine for once but don't downplay beer here either, they have several taps of local beer also, quite a few actually. They have 4 tap wines to pick from, house sangria, 2 reds, and a white. I tried all of them and enjoyed them thoroughly. I also got a "growler" or wine bottle rather I can keep and come back to fill up for a discounted price. The bottle is just $15 the first time and then its yours to keep. I went with the red Cab as my choice which is made from 100% California grapes. I took a stroll around the grounds and found myself a seat outside in the sun and just chillaxed for a while, enjoying my wine and taking in the calm of the place. By this time 8-10 others had come in and found seats outside in the covered gazebo spaces, they have here to do the same. Heather, the GM, and her two women staffers were awesome people. Professional and social, kind and helpful. Made me feel very welcome there. I get the vibe most of their guests feel the same way be it first-timers like me or regulars. They do have a small plates menu for food orders as well so that is something to consider when your here if you need more than just some really good wine or beer to put down. Came here for dinner since my husband and his brother had never been. It was also rib-eye night! SERVICE - It was our first time here so we were a little confused as to what to do. We walked around and found a waiter. We asked what to do and he said "Uh just find an open table". My husband's brother saw his friend who actually told us what the do so that was helpful. If you wanted to order drinks, a waiter came around and took your order or you could go to the main bar area. FOOD Ribeye Steaks - They were a little bland in my opinion. Great portion though. Potatoes - These were scalloped potatoes topped with bacon and cheese. Packed full of flavor. Green Beans - I am not used this style of green beans. I prefer mine a little crunchier. What a great place! Take one of Abilene's old buildings, modernize it, throw in a bunch of greenery and fountains, live music, and a fantastic patio and you have The Mill. Officially a wine bar, they run lots of specials, have a food truck on site, and you can rent it for your event. The silo shaded areas are just too neat. This place is gorgeous! I mean it's got a reclaimed chic vibe and wonderful out door area. This is the kind of vibe I want when I drink wine, especially the way it looks inside. The selection of wine is good for Abilene, which is to say utterly lacking, but probably double to triple what you'll see at any other establishment for 200 miles. The mark-up on a bottle of wine is near 100% which isn't bad. It's definitely worth it to just buy a bottle for the night over buying by the glass. As for the beer selection here, well I can't speak to it, the mark up was so high I didn't bother committing it to memory. If you prefer beer to wine you might just prefer another venue. The cheese plate has been a nice accompaniment when I've ordered it. I can't speak to any of the other food offerings. read more

I made my way back to The Mill recently on Thursday for steak night. It's a 12 oz ribeye with two sides and a roll for $20 bucks not including tax. It's about $21.50 otherwise. Of course when you're at the mill, you've got to grab a glass of wine in the process. I got their house specialty sweet wine and it was delicious! It reminded me of Stella Rosa which is my favorite wine. Once you make your order outside, it's usually at the pavilion but we went on a colder day so we were able to place our orders on the porch, which was nice. You get a number and go to your seat and they'll bring out your food. Another thing I noticed is if you're worried about coming to The Mill when it's cold, you should still go. They placed those plastic covers to protect you from the wind on the porch and the silos during winter months and open up the indoor seating area when there isn't an event. Once the steaks came out, it looked delicious! I wasn't a fan of the green beans because I think they came from a can. And the roll wasn't warm or soft like how I like my rolls, probably also packaged. The potato casserole was pretty flavorful, it had chunks of potatoes with cheese and bacon. The ribeye was the real game changer. Perfectly flavorful and just delicious. Super buttery and seasoned just to how I like it. You can't go wrong with steak night at the Mill! And while eating your steak, there was live music. I can't wait to come back another night for another special. read more

The Good: We've been to the Mill many times since they opened with little more than a fence around a gravel yard. The service has always been great and the beer selection is great. The Bad: Tonight we were informed that we could no longer bring our dogs with us to enjoy the music and atmosphere that made this place special in Abilene. We've had our dogs here probably a dozen times and never had any issues. We've seen others there with dogs as well! So tonight we were very surprised when management told us our pups had to go. The Ugly: Tonight the Mill lost some regular customers. If there were problems with a few specific individuals then address the issue individually! Don't punish the rest of the town because of a few bad apples. I thought the Mill was starting to turn Abilene around; bring it into the same arena as DFW or Austin with regards to pet friendly atmosphere. Five stars because Abilene doesn't have many/any places like this. It's an outdoor patio wine & beer bar, made from an old renovated cotton mill. it's that kind of Texas style casual retro urban cool that's big in Austin & has been slowly spreading across the state for years. A number of wines by the glass, ditto beers on tap & in bottles. They have snacky foods that don't require a full kitchen (things like a cold cuts and cheese tray). There's a fountain and shade outside to cool things off -- that said, it'd be toasty on particularly hot evenings. Would depend on your tolerance for such things. Being raised West Texan, I can sit comfortably in blast furnace conditions but many people can't. It's also a venue -- there was a wedding in the inside space when we were there -- so there were wedding guests milling around, but the outside area was spacious so we didn't really feel too crowded or outnumbered by the wedding guests. YMMV. Just be aware that if you're coming for a quiet romantic drink, there might be dozens of guests from some other party, so it may not be an intimate situation. As some other reviews mentioned, it's not a cheapo dive bar -- you're looking at $10-14 for a glass of wine and $4-6 for a beer -- which is standard in nicer "ambiance" places in bigger cities but pricey for many Abilenians IME. So if you're looking for a place to get hammered for cheap - this ain't it. This is "nice night out" kind of place, to get a relaxing drink and maybe some nibbles or dessert before or after your dinner. Service was fine if a little unpolished -- again, this place isn't a full-time restaurant, so there's not full-time ongoing staff, it's people who are doing this a few nights a week on the side. Check the hours because (being mostly a venue & not a full-time restaurant) they tend to be open limited hours, mostly around the weekends. read more

The Mill is a wonderful, beautifully appointed establishment with delicious wine, a good beer selection, upscale cigars, and aesthetic sensibility. I love going there. They welcome food trucks to serve real food, but they also serve nibbles that are very nice (the pita chips with hummus is a favorite). Their 1221 cabernet is among the best CA cabs I've had. My one complaint is that they need to pay attention to their wine temperatures. Red wine is NOT to be served at room temperature, but very slightly cooled. It matters. If you're going to operate a winery this nice and charge 15.00 per glass, please pay more attention to this factor. read more
