Very easy to get lost in the nature of things, staring at the river and canal. It's actually a pretty long hike if you do the red trail or even the orange one. It's not too cumbersome of a hike. Paths can get a bit narrow, so it's a bit annoying if you're walking and you encounter some bikers. Also wish there were a bit more signs, but that's probably intentional.

The routes get changed every semester or so for both bouldering and top rope climbing, and there are two auto-belays if you go there and don't have anyone to help belay you. (The people who go are also super nice--I've had people offer to belay me whenever I go alone!) They offer belay classes here as well--I think it's around $30, and once you're certified (they test you 3 times before letting you do your thing), you can come whenever you want! If you don't plan on getting belay-certified, you can still boulder whenever you want! :] For guests, it's just $5 for admission, which is about 1/4 the price of any day admission to the nearby climbing gyms. Harness rental is always free and shoe rental is $1 each time (free for your first time there though!)

As a student at Rutgers, this is probably my favorite part of campus. Located on the Livingston…read morecampus, the ecological preserve is footsteps away from the business school and has several miles worth of trails to travel. I tend to do this trail pretty often for running and to make things interesting I'll change up the trails. A lot of the trails are interconnected which can be confusing, but the trails are marked with some signs and trees which are marked with the color of their respective trail. The trail also extends from Livingston Campus all the way to Johnson Park and everything in between. My favorite trail is the blue trail which runs alongside one of the creeks and heads towards Johnson Park. Having run it in different seasons, I'd say the best time to do the trails is in spring/fall where the weather isn't too hot or cold and there's plenty of foliage. In the summer, it can get really hot and humid along with the many bugs that live there. (Be on the lookout for the many spider webs that you may encounter on the trail!) The trail is not paved, so be prepared for mud after the rain. Also, if running, be on the lookout for the many tree roots and changes in terrain that can trip you up (as I've done plenty of times). There are plenty of deer, squirrel, raccoon encounters so definitely be on the lookout. On one occasion the preserve was closed due to an "aggressive" coyote, but I have never made such an encounter. Overall, the Rutgers Ecological Preserve makes for a fun and interesting trip whether its hiking, running, biking or anything in between. I'd definitely recommend it, especially if you're a student.

There are over 70 miles of paths/trails along the D&R canal, passing through many historic towns…read moreand landmarks in NJ with some pretty houses along the way, from near Frenchtown down to Trenton, then up to New Brunswick, in a V shape. The D&R runs parallel to the Delaware & Lehigh (D&L) trail on the Pennsylvania side, so you're also getting a view of the Delaware River for that part of the track. The trail is mostly flat and is suitable for walking or biking. We love riding this trail and exploring sections of it at a time and the surrounding towns. Some sections are more scenic than others. A favorite easy ride (or hike) of ours is to start in Lambertville NJ, ride up to Stockton, cross over Center Bridge to the PA side, grab a burger at Dilly's, then ride down to New Hope, PA, walk around town, and return to Lambertville via the New Hope-Lambertville Bridge. It's only about 8 miles roundtrip and makes for a leisurely day, and is very doable even for kids.

The towpath along the Delaware and Raritan canal is a fantastic spot to stoll, run, or bicycle. The…read morepath is about four feet wide, and mostly flat packed dirt. Some spots are muddy or rutted at times. There's also some spillways made from stone blocks. Lots of people come here with small children since the towpath is smooth enough to push a stroller and even enough for little ones to walk on safely. The scenery is peaceful with lots of deciduous trees and occasional views of the majestic Raritan River. Turtles are plentiful in the canal, swimming and basking on logs. You're also likely to see snakes, chipmunks, voles, squirrels, toads, and frogs. As for birds, keep an eye out for herons, geese, and ducks in the water, and woodpeckers in the trees. The canal banks have abundant wildflowers and flowering bushes. One place to park is just off Easton Ave at the Historic Van Wickle House. Another parking lot is a couple miles further up Easton Ave by the entrance to Rte 287. Due to the current Coronavirus Pandemic, I wear a mask when walking here, and most others do too. The path is too narrow in some spots to allow for 6' between people when passing.

They have their own coaching styles but worked well together; making it "easy" for everyone to pick up riding. There's so much to keep kids busy -- a play kitchen, puppet stand, LEGOs, little marketplace, toys, and kid-friendly iPads with educational apps. Everything is also very well organized, which I really appreciate as a parent. Their book selection is great too. We especially love the Wonderbooks and Beginner Reader section and almost always leave with a few books to take home. But honestly, one of our favorite things about this library is all the children's events. The programs are educational and fun at the same time, so the kids are actually enjoying themselves while learning something new. Their craft events are especially good. Even the smallest details are planned out so well, and you can tell how much effort the staff puts into preparing everything. My daughter always gets excited about what she made and bringing it home. The librarians are also very friendly and understanding with the kids. They know children are going to play, get excited, make some noise, and occasionally argue over a toy. They are patient about it, which makes a big difference when you're there with a young child. We genuinely love coming here. My daughter gets to read, play, learn, make crafts, and socialize with other kids. When your child actually asks to go to the library, you know they're doing something right! Definitely 5 stars from us.

They also have a quiet room with tables and a section with greenhouse-styled glass walls (as Pallabi G. mentioned), which doubles as an especially peaceful sanctuary when you're feeling the stress of studying for the biggest exam of your life and need to ponder about life. The staff initially seem a bit unfriendly (no hellos or even eye contact) however go above and beyond if you ever flag them down and need their assistance--anything from information to finding a book. Then again that's just jersey. Lacking of a star: other than 2 vending machines and 1 coffee machine (that were frequently out of order) there are no food/drink options. Any food options in the area are a bit of a drive, so I would suggest getting your morning caffeine on the way and pre-packing lunch if you plan to spend the whole day there. I also wish they opened earlier one or two days a week; they would almost always have a line at the door before their 10 am opening every day.
