The decor is typical of a traditional pub, the clientele mostly locals, some families, lively but not overwhelming. The service was spotty in parts - oddly worse when the place emptied out - but pleasant and responsive when asked. I loved the teapots, cups and tiny milk jugs served on little trays with a smidgen of cake to make you smile. And the sticky toffee pudding was damn good too. If I am ever passing through the New Forest again I would most certainly stop here, even if it was wasn't pouring outside!

Duck was mouth-wateringly good, according to two of our small group and the beef wellington went down well too, though a few mutterings about the small helping of vegetables. Unfortunately I drew the short straw with the mushroom wellington - one large tasteless mushroom, smothered in soggy spinach (which unfortunately I can't eat due to an allergy) and the whole encased in pastry. Probably my fault for not checking in advance what the restaurant meant by 'a panache of greens'. However, having tasted the real thing on Christmas Day, it was clear this place doesn't really cater for vegetarians. We booked in advance as with most old places it's on the small side, but it does have a covered beer garden for warmer days. One reason this placed gets packed out is the locally sourced Sunday roast. The meat and the veg come from within 3 miles of the pub and the gravy comes straight from the stock pot making it a real taste of Dorset. It's also very generous in portion and price. Another selling point is the friendly husband and wife team running the show. They have a warm humour and great rapport which gives the pub its homely atmosphere. It does come with a dash of eccentricity. The low original ceiling was covered in multi-coloured fairy lights and that combined with the choral music playing made it feel like eternal Christmas. I'm not complaining. I love Christmas! I'll definitely be back to taste the rest of the menu. Well not all of it at the same time, but there was certainly a Steak & Ale Pie with my name on it.

For the regulars he had a pint in their jar before they got to the bar, was good at the banter and also seemed to know when to get scarce. As a guy who loves English bitter, was just passing through town, loves a natter, this place was a gem. The locals at this pub were a great bunch of guys and we all had a laugh.
