What a find on the way to a zoo keeping day at Flamingo Land... German food can be an acquired…read moretaste, but if it's something you're interested in or already enjoy then I wouldn't hesitate popping in here. (The pictures speak for themselves!) The inside is oh so charming, a church meets barn type of layout that works with the Bavarian theme. The owner and staff are all friendly and enjoyable to talk to, and you can tell they have a lot of repeat visitors... I'm not sure I've ever been here and not witnessed some local banter, etc. The owner himself always checks on you, and has a proper German sense of humour which some people may mistake for sarcasm, etc., but he's a genuinely nice guy. The service can sometime seem a bit on the slower side, but in a casual vibe manner versus being ignored, food taking too long, etc., this just isn't the type of place you come to in a rush, it's the type you come and hang out in and with that mentality it's a joy where the service perfectly complements the atmosphere. They have some good German beers on draft, and do jäger bombs for £3.00 if that's more your style... despite serving a drink of ruin, this isn't a place to get rowdy however. The menu may seem a bit limited, but doing a few things and doing them well works for me... and if you ask they do Spätzle, a noodle type side dish that goes really well with one of the saucy schnitzels. Oh, and somehow the Bavarian Fries starter is awesome! We always think we won't be able to finish them, but yet manage to because the sauce/cheese/onion combo is just too good... they've ruined cheese fries for me everywhere else! Essentially we take a train from York to eat here whenever I'm in the area, it's only a bit over 20 minutes away, but that still speaks to being well worth it in my book.

Something new in Malton. A German Beer Cellar known as St. Michael's Tavern. This has been…read morecompletely refurbished as the first stage of bringing The Mount back to a usable standard. The refurbishment appears to be of a high standard and the bar has a great feel to it. This was our first visit and the atmosphere was good considering how early we were. The beer was excellent as you may well expect and in fact as a result, we ended up staying rather longer that planned :-) If there was a down side, it's that getting served at the bar took a disproportionally long time considering the number of customers. This is something which I always find very disappointing but bearing mind they'd only recently opened I'm hoping things will improve. They appear to be offering food which looked good but I can't comment further because we weren't eating. All in all a positive addition to Malton and I can recommend a visit if for nothing more than the pleasant environment and good beer.
