We stopped at this pub after a long day of walking Edinburgh. We needed a pint and a snack. Love the drink and food menus are tabloids with the information. We enjoyed a pint of Innes & Gunn and split the 2 sausages with crisps.The sausages hit the spot. The service was fast & friendly. A nice way to end our day near our hotel at a fair price. read more

Stopped by for drinks. It was pretty packed, so we went with standing room at the bar. Nice ambiance here. We order one shareable drink called "The Captain's Punch". It was enough for the two of us to have two drinks from it and it was delicious. That one drink was worth this 5 star review! read more

My first meal in Edinburgh was at The Newsroom; a late lunch. I was walking with my daughter towards a cute cafe recommended by my hotel. But The Newsroom looked much more our style - sort of half pub & half cafe. They also had a nice-looking ambiance. We glanced at the menu by the door and entered. My internal clock was totally screwed up at this point (It was about 5 a.m. for me) but I decided to re-set it to lunchtime with a beer and some fish-n-chips. (Cuz that's how it works...right?). My daughter ordered the newsroom nachos, which she enjoyed well enough, apart from the overzealous application of jalapeños (i.e. the most overrated of the peppers). Unfortunately my fish-n-chips were way too greasy for me; so I didn't finish them. And then I had a mild stomachache for the next few hours. Too bad, since otherwise we liked the place. The service was friendly and my beer (a local pale ale) was tasty. I'd go back to the Newsroom if I had the chance, but would try something else to eat. They did have an interesting menu, and I did enjoy the vibe here. Based on our single visit, however, they just get a passing grade. read more

This has be hands down the worst place to eat in Edinburgh. I was very excited to fly 15 hours to eat at some of the best places in the world and took a chance on a interesting looking place. What a mistake. Almost 50 pounds for two hot dogs n a drink! Biggest waste of money. It was in eatable and when I called the waiter over he asked what I needed I said to the Man with a bun and earrings "This is awful and we can't eat this" he/she said ok can brought me the check. I've never had worse service nor food in my life. Hopefully this helps at least one person to save there money and time. read more

Disappointing. We were excited to try the food here after having some drinks the night before. We ordered the Haggis Nachos to start, Hell Boy Chicken Sandwich and Fish and Chips for our mains. The food was subpar considering the nice atmosphere and price. My chicken was grilled and juicy, but the additional parts of the sandwich were odd. My hand cut chips were dry and tough. And my husband had better fish and chips elsewhere. I will say the staff were friendly and attentive. If you go, enjoy some cocktails and chat with the staff. Skip the food. P.S. Wow, this is a lively bar and drinks are plentiful. Totally packed. The food was tasty and the host and staff were so welcoming. We tried the haggis and learned it really is like shepards pie with lamb. Potato leek soup was very good. We recommend the place. read more

A group of nine of us came to this bar Wednesday night looking to get some drinks. Four us from America. After one of my fellow Americans was able to get a drink at the bar with no issues, two of us went up and were denied. We were told they no longer take American ID's. My British passport was fine but because my sister didn't have hers and only had her American drivers license, we were then told we couldn't even be on the property. Note we are all in our 30's. I asked the bartender why they no longer accepted American IDs and she didn't have an answer. Very weird. Maybe steer clear if you're from the states *EDIT: the worker who refused service, was the manager. As I was (still am) genuinely curious as to why this has become a policy, I asked again while getting the rest of my group. The manager still did not have an answer as to why. No logic no reasoning, she literally had no idea. We went to six bars after this and not once had any issue with this. Two other bars that were asked about this were very confused. Staff doesn't really know what's going on. Based off of the lack of knowledge the bar manager had and the failure of communicating the policy to her bar staff who had previously served another American citizen in our group without question. I have been traveling England and Scotland for a week and this is the first bad meal I have eaten. The quality is like the food service suppliers for most Restaurants in the U.S. Service was poor despite few tables occupied in our area. I had naughty piggy which seemed like hillshire farms sausage with pulled pork and slaw. The rest of the table had Mac n cheese and the fish and chips. None of which is worth trying. One person had the mussels and liked them. Haggis fritters were greasy. So many tiny pubs have excellent food but this is not one of them. read more

The Newsroom is the kind of bar that caters to everyone, and its central location (very near Edinburgh Waverley) secures its trade of travellers and city centre workers alike. With that in mind, it's the kind of bar that has a bit of a universal appeal, and thus maybe lacks the personality of a theme bar or otherwise. That's not what it's trying to do, however, and the space inside is nice. It's usually fairly busy no matter what time of the day but it's big enough for you to always guarantee a table. It's usually full of suits between Monday and Friday, as everyone else has outlined. It's a nice, neutral space to meet up for a business lunch or some down time with friends. But most attractive is their menu! It's cheap as chips. Which suits me down to the ground if I'm stopping by for a quick pint and a budget lunch with friends - the food is decent and you can't argue with the under a fiver prices! It's central and it does the job if you're wanting a nice feed and a wee sit down near the train station. read more

I walk past this bar daily, as it's centrally located on Leith Walk, and I have to say I'm always receiving the creep vibe. On paper, it has everything going for it; it's got a great location, isn't too small, and it quite nicely decorated with comfortable leather chairs and modern decor. However, there are ALWAYS creepy men walking in, out, or even more worryingly sitting or standing by the entrance. I've been in there to hand out Cvs quite a while ago, before I knew ofcourse about The Vibe, and very little would make me head back there. The drinking does start quite early in there, and amongst the more bothersome clientele, I have spotted a family or two in there enjoying a drink... so I GUESS you'll make it out there untainted, but I wouldn't venture it... read more

Decent bar with a nice tap that offers lots of choice of beer and cocktails. Closes a wee bit early.

I was here for the US inauguration day -- seemed liked a good spot with lots of tv's to watch the news coverage while I was traveling abroad. Restaurant is very clean with plenty of good lighting and easy to access tables. Service was very good. Just the right amount of follow up. Menu was easy to read and not too many crazy items -- a few of the standards with a twist. I had the fish, no chips (sweet potatoes instead) and not mushy peas. Very well prepared -- and not greasy at all. This was an easy walk from my hotel and from the train station at Waverly. Very nice way to spend lunch. read more

Really greasy goujon things and haggis balls in a ton of oily batter and not very exciting chips. Good for a quick drink as its really central but definitely wont try eating again. read more

Bit of a first date kinda place. Inoffensive, decent drinks menu, plenty of seats, central location. The refurb has certainly improved the look of the place and it feels much more trendy than it used to. But there's something about this place that I just find lacking. It's fine, but I don't feel it's got a lot on many of the city's other drinking establishments. It probably fares well due to the proximity to the station, which is really handily close. read more

I've passed The Newsroom so many times but didn't actually venture in until last week. I was drawn in by a lot of hullaballo going on with people dressed up and handing out flyers for various Fringe shows. Feeling a little parched, we decided to pop in for a juice and rest our weary legs after trekking through the meandering streets of Edinburgh trying to seek out the best Fringe shows. It was pretty busy but we managed to squeeze ourselves in and find a couple of seats in which to sit and sip on our lemonades. I liked the buzz around the place but I get the impression that was purely down to Fringe antics and that this place isn't usually filled with people in fancy dress much like the rest of Edinburgh around festival time. As far as bars go, it's a-okay, and if you're looking for a lunchtime drink or a quick couple of drinks then it fits the bill perfectly. read more

The Newsroom had a much needed refurb a year or so ago, and I hadn't been since then, so when a friend suggested popping by to do the pub quiz I said yes straight away. I love pub quizzes. I'm pretty good at them... The Newsroom looks so much nicer now, with the lamps in the windows, and the staff seem much smarter than before. It's still a casual place, it's not gone all upmarket, but it's a decided improvement. I can't shake of the horrible, sour taste of the house white that was on offer previously, and okay, I didn't order wine this time, but everything just seemed a lot nicer. I was peckish, so ordered fries and haggis bites. You can add a small portion of fries for £1.50, but I wanted the full sized version. Everything was perfectly satisfactory, except perhaps the dips. The one that came with the haggis was supposed to have some whisky to it, imperceptible, but fine, whereas the 'aioli' that the fries come with, according to the menu, was what I think was pesto stirred into mayonnaise. Okay, but a bit strange with chips! Oh, and as for the pub quiz, we won! Hurrah! Now I have more of an incentive to return, as I must defend my title.... read more

Theres something about this place that I like. It has a sort of comfy/cozy atmosphere to it. I go and sit up the back in the soft and comfortable seats and forget I'm in the busy city centre for about an hour or more. I've only ever had french fries, but they were dang good french fries! hehe I think it's the prefect spot for meeting up with a friend for lunch and chillin for a while. I love the decor with the old rotary telephones, cassette tapes stuck on a wall, typewriters hung up like artwork....it brings back memories. :-) read more

Met some friends in here after work through the week and it was the first time I'd been in. It's scrubbed up well after it's recent refurb and it's good to see they do table service. There's a nice mix of high tables with bar stools in the window areas and lower tables at the back. It looks though there's a bigger area through the back for food but I've only been in for drinks so far. They've got a good cocktail menu and I can recommend the passionberry fizz. I'll need to come back to try some of the other cocktails on the menu. read more

As you could probably get from the name, it is full of suits after usual business hours but if you're a bit of a lay about like me you can use this to your advantage with their Monday to Friday daytime deals. The food isn't particularly outstanding, nor is the decor but I can think of places which are a lot worse and no where near as reasonably priced when you take into consideration table service and location. So, for something silly like £3.95 you can get a proper main meal, the fish to chip ratio was a bit off but where else could you get that for under £4, not even a chippy. read more

I have been to the newsroom.... maybe three times? Have I enjoyed all three visits? Why yes I have!! It has a totally laid back feel to it, the staff are very friendly and not too bad on the eye! Drinks are averagely priced, I have had more expensive and I have had cheaper. The cocktails are delish! My friend decided to try one with absinthe in it, which I must say I thought would be £6.95 down the drain. I could not have been more wrong, was a little jealous I didn't get one myself! The surroundings are comfortable, I did not want to leave that big cosy sofa to walk home in the cold, not one bit! The food menu looks good, I spent about 10 minutes pondering over this one burger which sounds very intriguing..... it has macaroni cheese on it?! But they have 6 meals for £6 between 12-6 on Monday to Fridays (I think?) so I don't see any reason not to give it a go!? read more

As an aspiring Journo, it seemed like the right thing to do to check out The Newsroom. However, it wasn't a Newsroom, but it was full of suits which I found strange. I would have put this as a student venue but it was mainly business men having lunch in here when I visited. The beer was fine. The décor was fine. Everything was just fine which just made it difficult to get relaxed or find anything special about the place. I had the one and left, because it was literally so busy that we couldn't hear ourself speak. We were kind of looked at as if we were taking up valuable dining space too, so we made a swift exit. An ok pub, but nothing to write home about. read more

Nice decor and... well that's about it as far as the plus points go. Minus points: Can take aaaaaaaaages to get served, and I'm talking 10 minutes plus at times, even when the place isn't all that busy. Cocktails are £3.95. Sounds like a bargain right? Wrong - the Mojito tasted like a battery acid slush puppy, and the only way to get an actual minty taste in the mouth was to actually suck at the one sprig of mint that was embedded in the crushed ice. Truly the worst cocktail I have ever experienced. You would have to actually PAY me £3.95 to try it again. I really don't like being too negative in reviews but this place is really a bit poor unless it's being used as an initial meeting place before heading off somewhere better. Decided to pop in for a late dinner only to find out that they were not serving food. To be fair most places in Scotland did not seem to serve food after 5-6pm. It is a very nice place to have a drink with friends. The staff weren't veyr friendly and so we left to find somewhere serving food. read more

The bar & staff are beautiful I will admit. But the drinks & desserts from next door were very disappointing. I had a strawberry & Lychee caipiroska which tasted like Hawaiian punch & cough medicine. I asked the server if I could change the drink because it tasted terribly, they refused. Whatever happened to good customer service? I'm not asking to change a sandwich to a steak & lobster. They need to change their attitude & where they get their desserts. Woof! read more

I very rarely go to the Newsroom but when I went recently I was surprised to see how good it looked. It looks way better since being renovated...not sure when that happened! I like all the bell jars (I think that's what they're called) with lights in them. I only went this particular night for a gig downstairs but I'd definitely go back just for the bar. read more

I recently attended a party in the basement and really enjoyed myself here. Excellent food and cocktails with many half price offers and the staff were friendly. Upstairs seemed like a good after work city drinking venue and was packed with young professionals early on the Friday night. When we left, the main downside seemed to be that the place had become packed with neds so I'd suggest heading there early read more
