Believe the hype at Hive…read more Our party of 3.5 (3 adults, 1 toddler) made our way over here on a blowy Saturday July morning for the breakfast essentials, and despite a healthy queue (it's counter service) Hive Beach Cafe delivered the goods in fine form. It's counter service. Weekend breakfast begins at 10am. At that time a swarm of dwellers will descend upon the counter to make sure their breakfast is accounted for. Join the queue and patiently wait (it moves pretty fast and they are very friendly and efficient). Grab a tray, order your menu items and coffees/teas, pick up drinks, sit down, grab cutlery/water/napkins, wait, food arrives. It's really all rather smooth, honestly. In fact, I'd venture to say I like this way BETTER than table service. No tracking down the check when you are ready to depart, just up and leave. Bravo! The Farmhouse Breakfast was gorgeous (see photo) and the Belgian Waffles with bacon and maple syrup were divine (though our toddler was hesitant to share, I don't blame him!). Brother in law enjoyed the Benedict and basically licked the plate. My flat white was intense and necessary. Everything was, simply put, perfect. On a nice day there are plenty of outside seats and its perfectly placed nearly ON the beach, so the views are stellar. It is the only thing around for miles, so enjoy it. The setting is pristine. If its rainy and windy (which it was), the covering is quite sufficient and seats many "inside." All this for about £50. Our best meal in the area, would definitely return.

We've spent a wonderful two nights at the Bull and the interesting little town of Bridport and…read moresurrounds. We were welcomed warmly on arrival and directed to park behind the hotel (free!), shown to our room on the second floor. Commenting on the hotel and accommodation: it's an old coaching house, so has all the creaks and structural foibles you'd expect of an ancient building. It's been recently refurbished and is looking very swish. They've made clever and considered use of the spaces, and the decor is sensitive and creative. I really loved the small details, like the retro mirrors, the sheepskin rug, the wool bed-throw and prints of the local area on the walls. The bed was big and very comfortable. The only complaint was the seagull noise at 4am - squawking up a hell of a racket. I closed and locked the sash-windows the next night which made a difference. The bathroom was light and spacious, and they offer Bramley products which are all 'nasty' free. Highly recommended. Commenting on the food and dining: There are inside and outside dining and drinking spaces. We ate dinner and breakfast inside on both occasions. The tables are small, so you struggle to find space for everything, but beyond that, the food is exceptional. The wine-by-the-glass is competitively priced and was of a high standard. We ate fresh fish, seafood, beef and lamb and it was all exquisite. The kitchen are doing a great job, and if I look at the reviews from the years preceeding, I can see that the Bull have really striven to do better and exceed expectations. Service was good, not overly familiar nor invisible. All staff seem to be well trained and familiar with the food, and in so doing were able to make their own recommendations. Book ahead for dinner, it is becoming more popular.

I had the worst dining experience of my life in this cafe and am reluctant to even award them one…read morestar. Sadly, I have to give them a star so they get one for being in a nice location. I went with a group of 12 for a late breakfast and this was my first experience of the Cafe. We each ordered a full English breakfast, one after the other, and took our seats outside. After a wait of about 25 minutes the first two breakfasts arrived, which, in my view, was an exceptional delay for such basic cuisine. To my surprise, the other breakfasts weren't delivered soon after in fact only two plates were served every 15 minutes or so. The first person to be served finished her meal at least an hour before breakfast number 10 arrived. Most disappointingly of all, after a lengthy wait two of our party did not receive their breakfasts at all. We made polite enquiries as to the whereabouts of the missing meals, and were at once met with suspicion and verbal abuse. The waitress's first response was to proffer the absurd suggestion that members of our group had secretly stolen the missing breakfasts when we were not looking. Our group having been accused to stealing, we took the matter up with the staff inside the restaurant, only to be met with equally uncooperative and abusive responses. The staff were adamant that all of the breakfasts had been delivered, yet refused to count the plates, which would have confirmed otherwise. Our group was again accused of stealing the missing meals and as we left the waitress followed us from the Cafe shouting abuse. The level of customer service was unquestionably the worst I have ever experienced. I have never been treated with such contempt and arrogance, and if this attitude towards customers persists, I have no doubt that the Cafe will soon be out of business. I advise avoiding this Cafe at all costs.
