KPH stands for Kensington Park Hotel, and even though it hasn't been run as a hotel for years there are loads of rooms upstairs, making this every developer's wet dream. The KPH has had a colourful past, but the last couple of years have been particularly special, and sometimes you don't know what you're missing until it's gone. Somehow the last management got it just right, the old bar received a gentle makeover but you'd never know that the fixtures and fittings hadn't always been there. One of the main attractions for me was the music - somehow a good pub band helps to make everyone welcome. OK, enough about the past. Fortunately, the KPH was closed for just a couple of weeks before new tenants moved in and the pub has been operating under new management for a couple of months now. The KPH is located on a busy corner which has had a pub on it for the last 150 years and is an obvious hangout, no surprise then that the bar is always busy. I made this my first stop for after work drinks last night and was pleased to see a few familiar faces. There was a band, just like the old days, and even some of the bar staff are still the same. But that's where the similarities end, the atmosphere just isn't the same. The bar looks like a temporary pop up with building materials stored under the counter, and they still just accept cash. The walls were repainted in a cold grey and sparsely decorated with generic blackboards and pictures. Some sport was streamed on several TV screens while the band were playing - overkill, especially as the music volume was put up so high the sound was distorted and there was a lot of nasty feedback. We decided to join the smokers outside to have a chat and were soon on our way. A long way to go to recapture the magic of the previous incarnation!

Very light and clean yet traditional enough to feel like a proper pub. We've had drinks downstairs on several occasions with no complaints. We just tried eating lunch in the dining room but since there wasn't anyone else up there we opted for lunch downstairs in the pub with the same menu. The macerated tomatoes with anchovies starter is quite good unless you are not an anchovy fan. I loved it, the wife did not. She ordered the leek and potato soup and quite enjoyed that. My main was a roasted leg of rabbit under bacon and server with a mustard sauce and I wanna say kale. I left not one drop on the plate. Service was good but a little slow, though we chalked it up to being a busy, rainy Saturday and the place was packed. We look forward to many a meal and drinks here in future.

We just left the pub. It's a bit manky inside, with the tables actually chained to their chairs, everything tatty and worn, and not really in a nice way. The White Hart (across the street) was mostly reserved, and the other pub nearby was closed (!) so the Beggar was rammed. There was a queue for drinks. Clientele was older and very white, as I expected. Service was glacial and not particularly welcoming. Not surly - just... meh. They were out of Guinness. My husband ordered me my large glass of Malbec anyway. It was disgusting plonk, for $9.80 - and to top it off, the glass was none too clean. Ugh. I downed a few gulps and we left. We won't be back.

The prices are a little steep so I ended up not eating any more, but if I'm ever flush I will deffo return. The decor is not dissimilar. This is what is great about the place; it is a real dirty old boozer. When we went on Saturday night the place was heaving, one half of the bar full of the traditional drunk patriarchs of an English family and one half of the bar (and the garden) full up with lycra wearing hipsters trying to recreate Brooklyn by a canal in Islington. Throw in a free barbecue out the back whenever we go and my hangover (despite a few jars of ale and some monster munch) is no where near as bad as it should be. Staff are extremely sweet but were having a tough saturday night when I came to visit. Their main toilet was bust, a couple of the beer pumps were dry and they had run out of ice half way through the night. Hopefully that means the takings were good but the drinks are so affordable, probably not. I happened to be with a great crowd of friends and did indeed also have a great number of good chats as per the last reviewer, so there must be some magic about this place, but other than my circle the crowd seemed pretty local and essentially comprised of the Pete Doherty types who all strive to be different but ironically all end up looking exactly the same. Rude too - one even shot a party popper into my eye - if I was a bloke I may have lumped him but don't worry I'm a laaady. The pub's located amongst a variety of council estates which perhaps explains this. There is an area upstairs also available for private hire, conducive to a house party feel, and this was pretty kicking. Massive respect for the pub landlords who keep this place alive. Probably a cool place if you're a local, but I wouldn't seek it out. If in the neighbourhood I'd be much more likely to head over to the Rosemary Branch, down along the canal towards Baring Street, which is an extremely pleasant pub that occasionally has live music on.

On a rainy Sunday afternoon, The Golden Heart is right across from the famous Spitalfields market. When there are thirsty people and they spot this massive pub on the corner, they're going to pop in. A few seats here and there plus on this day a roaring fire in the gas fireplace, what more did I need? Oh yes, a beer. After waiting patiently to catch the attention of one of the lovely ladies behind the bar, I was able to pick up and pay for a pint of Foster's that did a fine job of quenching my thirst. Just in time to catch the kickoff for a football match on the large screen TV. The crowd seemed to be evenly split between the two teams in a friendly enough way.

After having a pub lunch somewhere else, we weren't quite ready to call it a day, and one of my friends mentioned that the pub at the end of his road had a drag show on Sunday nights. So...as you do...we decided to give it a try...and I'm so glad we did. Although the drag show was entertaining, and I'd certainly go back again for it, it was the actual pub that I really liked. It still has a nice, old pub feel...hasn't been too gentrified, and had a good variety of people in it. When we first walked in there were a couple of tables with babies, but by 7pm, they'd cleared out. There was plenty of seating, but not so much to make it seem crowded...it had a nice cozy feel. The bartender was great...I couldn't decide which wine I wanted, so he let me do a little wine tasting before I chose my bottle. One friend ordered a pizza....which from the small bite I had, tasted pretty awesome. I'm definitely going back for pizza! It's also just around the corner from the tube station, and an even quicker walk to a bus stop...luckily for me, it was the bus I needed to get home. Great little pub and I'll definitely go back.

The crowd is nice and mixed, it actually feels a bit like you're in someone's living room, cosy and welcoming. There's a lot going on here, today we have a cake / nic nac sale, loud piped music, sports on TV and a pizza bar all in different parts of actually quite a small pub! There's also signs for a comedy night, and there's a cocktail list on the wall along with all your usual pub drinks. There's a little courtyard out back which catches the sun, it doesn't feel like a Sunday aftetnoon in here - more the vibe and energy of early Friday night!
