Ick! I've been trying to find a good cupcake in SP since moving here. I decided I had to pick one of these up as a treat to test it out when I passed by at the mall.
One of the major problems with the cupcakes that I have tried in this city is that Brazilians have a very different idea of what makes good frosting than Americans. Brazilian cakes are usually iced/glazed rather than frosted (for anyone who is confused frosting should be thick and fluffy without tasting like whipped cream while a glaze looks more like a sauce that can be poured or drizzled on top of a cake). Cakes here often have no topping which means that the cake itself has much more flavor, but that's not so exciting for a cupcake. All of the cupcakes at the mall kiosk were quite cutely frosted and decorated. The frosting of this red velvet was whipped (which I could tell by looking at it so it didn't bother me too much) and had only a slight tang of cream cheese flavor instead of the traditional rich creaminess of a red velvet frosting.
The major bummer was that the actual cake sucked. It had almost no flavor and was just a bit sweet and a bit fruity. For anyone who is not aware, red velvet cake is actually cocoa flavored and died with red food coloring or some kind of beet extract. The fruit did not stop there! The thing was filled with some kind of berry jam?!? In case I was not clear: There is NO FRUIT in red velvet. Even if you examine the cupcake as not a red velvet, the flavors and textures did not make sense together.
Such a disappointment. Not worth the calories at all. read more
