Tried a new cheesesteak spot in the city because I LOVE a good cheesesteak Pulled up to The Original Steaks and Hoagies - Madison (they've only been open about a week!) and had to give it a shot. I ordered a LARGE Original Cheesesteak loaded with fried onions, mushrooms, hot + sweet peppers, cheese whiz, mayo, lettuce, and tomato--and made it a meal with a Mountain Dew + fries. Let's get into it Cheesesteak: It was... okay. Not bad, but nothing I'm rushing back for. Fries: Supposed to be Cajun fries but they weren't giving Cajun at all and the blue cheese cream sauce wasn't in my bag (which sucks because I was READY for that). The ambiance was cute. I had really high hopes for the Original Steaks and Hoagies that just opened in Madison, WI. love the Philly Cheesesteaks I devoured while visiting Philadelphia, P.A.! Hoagies and Cheesesteaks are a way of life in Philly and it must be done right! The staff at The Original Steaks and Hoagies were very helpful, welcoming, with prompt service. However, the food itself majorly missed the mark and disappointing. I am hoping they can improve! I was hoping the could bring the magic of Philadelphia to Madison! I tried their large WHIZZY MONSTER cheesesteak sandwich with Hot capicola, fried onions, sweet peppers, Whiz, chopped topped with whizzy potato tots and my husband had their original Philly Cheesesteak with mushrooms. My husband liked his Philly cheesesteak but said it could have been better. I was very disappointed in my WHIZZY MONSTER cheesesteak because it didn't have a-lot of meat in it and the meat was not seasoned with very bland taste and very little cheese whiz. When I went to Philadelphia, they love to fill their Philly cheesesteaks with a good amount of meat with absolutely no skimping on the meat, the meat was seasoned super well with salt/pepper, while also having great flavor from the peppers and onions. The Original Steaks and Hoagies missed the mark for me because they need to season their meat better, add more meat to their sandwiches without having to pay extra or double the meat, and try the food before serving to guests. If we are just talking about the food, I was quite happy with this place. The cheesesteak was reasonable priced, packed with meat and flavor, and just tasted damn good. It hit the spot for what a Philly Cheese steak is supposed to. That being said, since this is a new location, they do have some kinks to work out. The flow of the place is not great as they are not set up to have a line for people to order and the signage isn't great for where to pick up. You have to shimmy around the tables to get to the register and if there is no line great! otherwise, it's kind of backwards. Then you awkwardly stand along the tables with people eating waiting for your name to be called. The staff is definitely overwhelmed given the overwhelming support from the community and the staff is still learning how to work with each other. but I respect the hustle and would be back to try again, especially if there are any deals. The fries were luke warm, but well seasoned. Reminded me of five guys fries. The tots were...weird honestly. It's not like potato tots, they're all mixed with cheese and then fried. So it's like a hush puppy but wasn't crispy enough. TLDR - stick with the classics and you'll be solid. read more

This tiny sandwich place puts out some hugely delicious food: hoagie sandwiches, salads, sides and even cauliflower-based delicacies. Don't count on a table being available, as there are not many. The food is worth the wait. We tried a plain cheese steak with provolone, an original chicken cheese steak, and a "small" order of Philly fries. My small Philly fries order was HUGE. Plenty (if not too much) for a main dish for one adult! It had a lot going on...hand-cut fries drowned in juicy ribeye morsels, peppers and onion, and laced with creamy cheese whizz. Very satisfying. Yes! Finally a place that not just makes REAL Philly cheesesteaks, but really good cheesesteaks. And I know what a good cheesesteak should be. A bit if background. I grew up in the Philadelphia area. My family is from Dickinson St. So when I heard a place was opening that makes 'authentic' cheesesteaks, I had to decide for myself. Well, let me tell you, my want is over. I watched the cook at the flattop make my sandwich, making sure he kept the spatulas moving, turning the meat, chopping in the cheese, warming up the roll. And he did it all very proficiently. I'm glad I didn't ask for extra meat; there's PLENTY filling the roll. The roll....a word about the roll. A good cheesesteak is about the roll as it is the meat. I noticed boxes from Liscio's Bakery (in Glassboro, NJ) !!! These are hands-down the best rolls to use! Every place around Philly that makes good cheesesteaks will either use Liscio's or Amoroso rolls. So, already I'm expecting an exceptional sandwich. And, yup, that's what I got. Inside the warm, chewy, tasty Liscio's roll was a sandwich packed, and I mean packed, with perfectly cooked thin-sliced ribeye (no gristle) with cheese rippling throughout. Perfectly seasoned. Not too salty. Every bite was sheer cheesesteak bliss. Boy, did they make a great-tasting cheesesteak. Can't wait to back and try other items, like their cheesesteak hoagie, Italian hoagie, or maybe the cauliflower sandwich. read more

The steak was good. I think it would've been much better if I would've got the whiz instead of the provolone. I also think it would've been much better if I would've put some of the vinegar on there it just needed something else. The fries were good. The manager was excellent. The place was clean overall good experience. I just need to adjust my order. read more

Service is fine. Cheesesteak could be much better if the meat wasn't pre-cooked. It was too dry because it was just warmed up with the cheese. Better to wait a few more minutes and have a fresh hot cheesesteak because the flavor would be better. Prices are very reasonable. read more

I wish this review could be about the food but I never got to order any. First time I stopped in I waited for at least 10 minutes with neither of the workers engaging me in a greeting or conversation about what I might want. It was kind of busy so I gave them the benefit of doubt. Stopped in again just the other day and I was the only one that came in at that time. Again, no greeting or acknowledging my existence whatsoever. I stood there by the cash register for about 5 minutes with no eye contact or even a "we'll be right with you". The workers just had their backs to me the whole time, which was odd because I know they saw me walk in as it's not a big space. So I left without ordering anything, which was a bummer because it looked good in the pictures. Was looking forward to a great cheese steak.
