We were in Fort Wayne for a quick overnight business trip where my wife and I decided to try Oyster Bar after some locals raved about it . As a seafood lover, I was sold just based on the name alone The building itself is pretty cool. We were told it dates back to the 1880s and is the 2nd oldest building in Indiana behind some other one in Indianapolis. You can definitely feel the history when you walk in. The place is small, with only about 14 tables, and everything is packed in pretty tight, but that's part of what gives it character. The old bar immediately grabbed my attention and looked like it hadn't changed much in over a century We started with the Parmesan baked oysters, which were outstanding and surprisingly fresh for being in the Midwest The homemade clam chowder was loaded with clams and flavor. It was so good it didn't need anything added to it. We also ordered a couple of smoked Old Fashioneds that were a great way to start the night I wanted sea bass, but they were out, so I went with the walleye fish and chips. It's honestly hard for me to pass up fish and chips when they're on a menu, I'm glad I did. The fish was well-seasoned and on point My wife went with a seafood combo that included seafood au gratin, bay scallops, shrimp, crab, applewood bacon risotto, and baked in a lobster creamy sauce Being in Fort Wayne for just one night, this ended up being a great find. The restaurant only holds about 50 dinners and the tables are uncomfortably small & close together. It's also located in a neighborhood that might make some people take caution. On the flip side...The Oyster Bar offers 130 years of history in a uniquely older facility that features fresh high quality seafood along with outstanding service. You decide what you value and how you want to spend your dinning dollars. The Oyster Bar is located south of downtown area on Calhoun Street. The vintage building is well signed, lighted and offers an easy-in-easy-out side parking lot. The restaurant only holds about 50 dinners with a limited number of tables and a small bar. I would suggest that you call and make a reservation as The Oyster Bar is a fairly popular place to dine. Inside the building has retained the historic look. The foyer is very small...just like walking into an old house. They feature lots of dark hardwoods and a vintage looking bar. The tables are located very close together as you would expect in a small area. I think the tables are smaller in size as it was difficult to accommodate all the dishes, menus, glasses and cell phones. The white table linens and attractive "sea going" decor help set the experience. The staff on this night was very friendly, professional and helpful. They made us feel welcomed quickly. The waitress was great about removing dishes, refills and stopping to check on us. It's easier when all your tables are close together. Overall the food was excellent. Fresh seafood in Fort Wayne isn't common place. The food creations were delicious & creative without being all that unique. You will find a fairly broad menu to meet most dinner's choices. Here is a run down on the items we ordered: -Calm Chowder: very creamy without being overly rich to taste; moderately thick in consistency with a mild clam flavor; several larger pieces of clam meat; very good taste -Oysters on the half shell: beautiful presentation; oysters were fresh taste; no salty or "sea" tastes/smells; a small dab of sweet cocktail sauce and ground horseradish were nice add; oysters were outstanding!! -Fried Hushpuppies: no corn meal breading here. The outside was lightly fried and slightly oily to taste. The inside was slightly sweet, soft and moist. The chipotle aioli sauce has a very mild southwestern flavor that accented the sweet breading. -Crab Cakes: two fairly large cakes packed with real crab meat; gently fried; the fresh seafood flavors come through nicely; another very good dish! -Seafood Au Gratin: plenty of chunks of scallops and crab buried in a delicious lobster cream sauce and layer of mozzarella cheese. The sauce was creamy and mild without being rich. The seafood pieces retained their original flavor. The cheese topping was nice and gooey which held the seafood & sauce together nicely. Delicious dish!! -Diver Scallops: large and plump scallops cooked perfectly; very tender and moist without a "fishy" taste - nicely done!! I very much enjoyed the dinning experience. We ate here the Monday night before Christmas, party of 8. We walked through the kitchen to get to our table, which was in a cozy little room with only one other table. Service was great! We had BBQ shrimp, crab cakes and hush puppies for apps. They were all tasty. Filet mignon was tender and flavorful. That, with the potatoes and greens that came with it, were on the heavy/rich end of the spectrum, so if you don't like that you might want to sub a baked potato. The wait was so long. We had reservations but still ended waiting 20 minutes for a table. We ordered drinks and that took very long to come. We ordered appetizers and that took so long to come. We ordered dinner, and we waited forever. Yet no apology for the long, long wait. A typical meal should be 90 min max. We were there for almost 2-1/2 hours. Will not go back. Food-wise, however, it was pretty good. Oysters were good, but the deviled eggs were too fishy tasting for me. Steak was good, but thought it'd be bigger. I had a drink called Chef's Water, the drink was served in a plastic round container, like one would get bulk food in at the deli counter! I enjoyed the drink! Must have run out of glasses? We then ordered oysters casino $22 very good. Ended up getting the chef's special of , sea bass and halibut $60 small portions but very good. Believe the hype! I was staying down the street at the Hilton and got a recommendation from the bartender. I walked down at about 4 PM and spoke with a waitress and the bartender in The Oyster Bar about the menu, seat availability, etc. They were both so kind and helpful. We returned at 7 for dinner and had seats reserved at the bar. This is a small restaurant, so reservations are recommended. It is a small restaurant but clean and very efficient. Went for savor Ft Wayne but have been here several times in the past. The food is always fresh and delicious. I loved the tuna tartare. Black and bleu salmon was very good, the bleu cheese was not over powering in the dish. Cioppino flavors were decent, but on the heavier side than I'm used to. Their bread is hot and fresh too. Our waitress however was super late getting to us in the first place, then another long wait for our drinks and again, another interminable wait for her to just take our app orders not to mention the wait for our meals. She would run out to the outdoor area and sit with patrons who were evidently friends of hers and be out there while we and others waited on her. Then while we're waiting for her to just take our dinner order or bring our drinks, she is taking selfies with the table next to us. Having been a long-time loyal patron, what a shocking experience. I recently had surgery and didn't want to inconvenience a server for a small meal. I called on Friday for a carry-out order at 4:15pm when a family member could pick it up for me in my condition. I was advised even though the bar was open, food could not be ordered until 5pm. I accepted this. I called at 5pm promptly, Saturday, and was advised, today, I could not even order a carryout. Everyone who has patronized The Oyster Bar knows very well, at 5pm, the tables are rarely filled. The rules had changed and the owner who had informed me of this was lacking any courtesy. My family member was actually waiting in the parking lot to help me. She insisted on trying to accommodate me. She went in and was approached by a server and asked if she could simply place a small order for an ailing family member. The server was fair and asked the new cook. She returned rather empathetic she could not help her or the business to make a sale. This business did not want to serve two individuals. I have never experienced such poor illogical business practices in my thirty plus years as a patron. This facility was far better run by the original owners who were kind, cared about customers, and went out of their way to execute amazing seafood. I had not been in for a while as the cooks keep changing and the seafood was not as it once was. I am afraid I have determined to move on. read more

I really hoped to have a decent review but I can't. We had oysters Rockefeller and they had no seasoning and were swimming in green goo. The hush puppies were ok but the "crab" on top was ground up claw meat and bread crumbs. I had the trout with crab butter and it was so salty I couldn't eat it and paid extra for the crab butter and again was ground up crab claw with breadcrumbs. But before my dinner I had the house salad with the spring mix so bitter it tasted like grass. Please don't get the ranch dressing. It was watered down. My husband had the seafood au gratin and it had large lumps of crab/lobster and it was imitation! It also had no seasoning. The Cesar salad had no seasoning and tasted like fish juice dressing. My husband had 2 old fashions and he said they were really good. The bread was really good, but for a $200 dinner you should walk away with good food not just good bread. This is one of those hidden gems in town. We were here for a business dinner with a large group and I was wonder where we would be seated! Well, it turns out that they have a small room on the back where you can fit a group this size. They had a new waitress helping us and I liked that they had a second waiter taking our orders silently on the back to ensure they had it all right. Drinks were always timely provided and so was food! This is the best part! We ordered a few appetizers and both were great! Since I love spicy food, my favorite was the oyster bar shrimps. They come with a side of blue cheese which adds a lot of flavor to it! I ordered the Seafood Au Grautin and it was melting! Also it was very hot, but it was delicious. There was also plenty of it and I certainly did not eat it all... too many apps? My partners ordered different dishes and one of them loved the baby back ribs. They were tender and juicy. The filet mignon was also huge and tasty. As we were leaving they had the patio full! Weather was so nice that we entirely missed this option. The one thing you will find interesting is if you need to seat on the back room, you have to walk through their kitchen , which made me wonder how they could make these delicious plates in such a small kitchen. My husband ordered the Oyster Stew ( which always loves). The consistency was like gray mush. You could taste oysters but they were mixed up in the mush.
