    Beautiful windows.

I love this place! The NZ king salmon, if a tad on the salty side, may just be the best salmon I have EVER had, and the spinach/porcini pastry is also delicious. All the sides I've tried here are a bit uninspiring, but still good. As to drinks, the Panama libre is a favourite. Great mix of people, and friendly staff. A beautiful, beautiful space for a drink or a meal or both.

Having been to Panama many times over the years and always found it bustling and busy, it didn't deter me at all that we pretty much had the place to ourselves on a quiet Sunday evening. In fact, we loved it. We took full advantage and made ourselves at home, shuffling a few seats in a row facing out one of the beautiful big windows and people watched out onto Smith St. The staff were so relaxed, and didn't mind us reorganising some furniture, and also provided some great drink tips and fantastic overall service. The cocktails were all winners, some weirder than others, but all tasty and perfectly refreshing. Recommend the G&T (comes with with fresh slice of grapefruit to add to the bitter zest) or the Osama Gin Laden (which we ordered based on the pun alone). Gin was locally sourced also, which was cool. Also found a new favourite with Solerno Blood Orange liqueur on ice with a slice of lemon. The bartender gave me a sample first, which wasn't something I had experienced with the hard stuff before (beer maybe, but not spirits). The layout is classy, and cool. Will enjoy myself next time I'm there among the crowd no doubt, but it was nice to have it to ourselves for one night (even if we got politely shuffled on after 9pm).

This must be one of the busiest restaurant-bars in the whole of Melbourne on Valentine's Day. The way this restaurant looks and the breathtaking views of the city through those magnificent arched windows don't so scream romance as sexily whisper it in husky tones. The French-inspired food is unpretentious yet definitely of restaurant quality, and it's good value. The long wine, beer and cocktail menu means you can pretty much guarantee you'll get the drink you want. It has never been too crowded in here when I've been, having said that, it is advisable to book ahead if you're planning on the full wining and dining experience as demand for the dining tables is great.

Panama - a splendour in Fitzroy. Once it was a secret, barely noticeable as you passed the front door. With the popularity of this area - it's not a secret anymore - especially since the wonderful Messina opened below and the ice-cream fanatics hide the doorway. Still to the uninitiated - what greets you after 3 flights of stairs will surprise. The warehouse style open room with a dining room at one end, a pool table in the middle and a bar area at the other - all is a delight. Floor to ceiling windows adds to the grace of the venue. Although not recently, I've eaten here several times over the years, both in the dining area and from the bar menu and neither have left me wanting. Such a cool place, except on really hot summer days when the lack of AC becomes apparent.

The Panama Dining Room is one of the nicest restaurants I've been to in a while. I was so impressed by their decor, style of food and good service where they seemed a class above the rest. This is a great venue on Smith St and is fairly popular these days. Panama seems to attract a young but not ratty crowd, which is a relief when places become popular. The menu is fantastic offering dishes such as the Zucchini flowers filled with three cheeses on a grape and walnut salad, amazing! I love that it's a little bit different where the last time I went there was live jazz entertainment used as background music and the place was a buzz. If you're lucky enough to head down there and see some of the live music and get some dinner, you will definitely not be disappointed. I have been constantly impressed by the high quality of Panama.

If you're staying at the QT, ask about something called the "breakfast package" which includes a coffee, a juice, a small fruit salad and an entree. It worked out to be a pretty good value over getting everything individually. Two killer recommendations: If you're really hungry go for the "Wood Fire Grilled Farmhouse Breakfast" as it's a little bit of everything and will easily fill you up until dinner. Alternatively, the Black Truffle Scrambled Eggs are a great #2, and honestly are in the running for the best scrambled eggs I've had in my life. Usually truffle-y stuff can be pretty overwhelming but they hit a flawless balance here. (I've been trying to duplicate these at home without much luck using truffle oil.) Anyway, the truffle eggs come with four thick slices of their "superloaf" bread which is like this super hearty bread packed with nuts. The perfect vessel for VEGEMITE! Oh and you've got to try the watermelon salad. It introduced me to the amazing combination of watermelon and ricotta, which is way better than you'd think. I usually don't expect a ton out of hotel breakfast places, but Pascale seriously just knocks it out of the park. The food is great, the staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and... Well, you've got to go there.

I was so impressed with their evening fare at a recent Yelp Event that I went back to test the waters with the morning crew. Could the staff be as perky, helpful and efficient as the night staff were? Dealing with the morning Paris end Collins St staff can't be too much fun but wow, the staff here make it seem like a dream. Four staff members, all smiles and all super fast on getting you to wear your happy face. The small seating area inside was full and the outdoor area was filling up with ladies and gents in suits when I stumbled in desperate for my morning latte. The development and investment in their staff really shines through. Two staff taking orders and only one barista on they were easily pumping out takeaway and dine in coffee with ease and efficiency. A recent price hike to $4.50 for a large coffee could have caused issues with regulars but the staff handled it with such diplomacy that the 10 or so people who came in/out at the same time as me happily paid the difference. Let's not forget that they are also serving up some delicious looking breakfast treats. Next time I'll be back for the breakfast slider. It's never too early in the morning for a serving of gruyere.

I'm vegan, so I was certain they wouldn't be able to accommodate me because we ALL know Danes don't eat anything except fish and fattening pastries and those little buttery cookies that come in a tin at Christmastime. Lo and behold, DANSK has a vegan sandwich on the menu, clearly marked as "vegan," plain as day, right there. Now. Before you get too excited. By "sandwich" I mean "smørrebrød," a little open-faced square of bread. That's all they serve at DANSK at lunchtime, these smørrebrød things. (geez I really love the o's with the little slash through them. I feel like a Viking when I type them.) Anyway, look, the smørrebrød was fine, interesting but not especially filling, and pretty overpriced for what you get because it's tiiiiiiiiiny. You really feel like you'd like to eat two in order to feel halfway filled up for lunch, but you'll look like a greedy jerk if you ordered two because each smørrebrød comes out all nicely decorated and perfectly centred on one plate. This place is obviously trying to be something of a Scandinavian fine dining place, with the stylish minimalist Scandinavian decor and the miniscule portion sizes, but something was just a bit off. It's like a step below "fine dining" but two steps above "casual," and that's an awkward in-between place to be. I also felt the lunchtime vibe was a bit weird. It was deathly quiet -- the waiters barely even made any sound, sneaking up on you like Danish ninjas. We came right at noon and were the only people there, so maybe that contributed to it. I dunno. Maybe it would be better at night.

The setting is extremely minimalist and open, and does remind one of a trip to a more elegant version of an IKEA showroom. Not sure that I've ever been to a restaurant quite like this. Service was good. I went for dinner and food was .... interesting. I tried the 'Taste of Dansk' sampling menu, and would probably recommend this as the way to go if you want to try out several different things while there. Personal favourite was the herring (must have with aquavit!) and there was a liver/mushroom/bacon dish that was quite good as well. To be perfectly honest though, I wasn't much of a fan of the other options (a chicken salad, prawns and egg, and a meat tray with pickled cucumbers) but I am still glad to have tried them. Would definitely recommend this place for curious people, interested in trying a new cuisine that you would rarely get the chance to try elsewhere. Would definitely not recommend this place for vegetarians. Good for couples or groups of friends (unless you're vegetarian couples or groups of friends). Skål!
