Go see Jen, immediately! When I was new to Seattle and was about to start my new job, I wondered into the parlor with the sign "Walkens Welcome" with Christopher Walken's face plastered on it. I was not disappointed. I got a fantastic shade of red that I really wanted and a very nice bang trim. A couple nights ago, I went back for my second haircut with Jen and everything was just as fabulous. The old school barber chairs rock. I will be back again and again! P.S. About my hair: naturally super thick, but very, very fine, and straight. It doesn't hold a curl, has no natural body, and no natural texture. I'd previously spent the last 7 years growing my hair out (to donate) and had one quick chop to lob those 2 feet off early last year at some random salon that I figured could cut in a straight line easily enough (they did). I have severe trust issues when it comes to my hair. So much so that in 32 years of life, I've never established a relationship with a stylist. I cut it myself for a few years in high school (ha) and then trusted friends as they went through cosmetology school back home in Detroit, with mixed (but mostly good) results. I recently moved across the country, leaving them behind, and felt like it was time to give someone new a chance. (Full disclosure: I semi-regularly bleach and dye my own hair fun colors. I'm cheap, I like the challenge, and have fun playing with it (again, with mixed results), but I'm pleased with my current color, so this review is all about the cut, although Shelly's portfolio of color looks so impressive that I may consider getting it done by her in the future!) I've spent the last year regrowing it past my shoulders and wearing it in a bun because I'm too lazy to be bothered. Because of the bright, teal dye that I use, I don't wash it very often. I easily scheduled an online appointment to see Shelly based on the good reviews here and was not disappointed. I only had a 2-3 minute wait when I arrived (early) while she finished her previous cut. The salon is really cute and comfortable. I was worried about the state of my hair (unwashed after 8 days) and knew Shelly and I were a match when I apologized for it and she told me it was nothing and that she'd once gone four months without a wash. When she asked my high school graduation year and put on a mix of rap, pop and r&b songs from that year (2003), there were basically heart balloons floating above my head. I gave her very little direction during our consultation and vaguely said I wanted it shorter and a little angled with some texture. She went to town for about an hour, chatting and razoring the heck out of it to add texture. She then gave me the best shampoo of my life (seriously, my hair was like a ball of grease and it felt soooo clean after!) and styled it in a way that looked easy to do on my own and was adorable. OH and she also fixed my 32-year cowlick by taking a tiny razor to it, which NOBODY HAD EVER DONE BEFORE. Blew my mind (and she let me keep the razor to keep up with it!) I've never had more compliments on a haircut in my life and I have no idea what kind of unicorn magic she worked, but I can wash it, style it, and sleep on it for 3-4 days and when I wake up in the morning each day, it looks flawless. I've already recommended Shelly to another friend of mine, but cannot sing her praises enough. If I could give her more than 5 stars, I definitely would. I'm so happy to have finally found "the one". Thank you, Shelly, for turning what is normally an anxiety-inducing, disappointing experience into one that I can look forward to. read more

New place in the neighborhood, my wife went and loved it (Jen did her cut), so I decided to check it out. The space is inviting and comfortable with a great couch and good music. The online scheduling was super-convenient and I got in right on time. Shelly cut my hair, and it was without doubt the best haircut I've ever had. She immediately understood the look I wanted and tailored her cut to the shape of my head. She talked me through a lot of the process and taught me how to style it the way I wanted (which was not the way I assumed it would be done). Both Shelly and Jen are extremely nice and funny, and know a lot about hair and grooming. To top it off, the retro barber chairs are great; they do a straight razor neck shave and finish with a quick neck and shoulder massage. This place is exactly what Seattle has needed. read more

There are few words to accurately describe how incredible Shelly is. Above all, Shelly is a consummate professional. Classically trained at Gene Juarez and a veteran of Rudy's from the early days, Shelly has clearly mastered her craft. Besides being hilarious and endearing, she effortlessly gives her clients the best cuts and colors, often with a little 80s or 90s R&B soundtrack to complete your experience. I have entrusted my hair to Shelly for over twenty years and she is irreplaceable to me. Also, to the one or two negative reviews in the ocean of glowing five stars that is her Yelp page (thanks so much for everyone loving Shelly like I do!!), I strongly urge you give her another shot at tending to your follicles. Shelly knows hair, shapes, and textures like second nature. The Parlour is a gem in the Columbia City retail block which we are all lucky to have. And to those complaining about prices, please don't insult her. A men's cut at Gary Bosz or any upscale men's salon will run you $200 or more and Shelly could easily cut hair there, but lucky you, she owns The Parlour and is willing to grace you with her skills. I like the location and vibe of this place. Right on Rainier and the parking is not too bad (until PCC opens at least :) I wish I had a better haircut my first time coming in. Would have gone in again to have it fixed but they do all the booking online through a tool where you have to open an account. Too complicated for me. I came in with inspiration photos wanting a natural ashy balayage and a trim. After a few hours passed and I felt like we were getting close with color I was told that she used the wrong chemicals and that she'd have to start over. I was extremely frustrated as this was a day off for me and I'd already been in the salon for three hours at this point. She then haphazardly added more chemicals to my hair. When they were washed out and my hair was dry I looked in horror as the color was completely wrong and I was given color to the root when I asked for a natural fade. Shelly had her iPad playing and was completely distracted the entire time. Then she asked me to come back another day to fix it and said it would only take an hour or so. I was in the chair for another 3 hours and left with my hair completely fried looking nothing like what I asked for. My hair is incredibly unhealthy now and I looked like a fool for my badge photo at work. Won't be going back. read more

My former stylist left the mainland for sunnier skies, since then I have been searching for a new stylist to call my own. After bouncing around for a couple years, through the referral of a very dapper friend, I have found the Parlour. Shelly is a scissor wizard! Her approach to hair is to listen to her customer while giving them a realistic perspective of what their head and face shape will compliment. She then methodically snip and cuts towards perfection. I really, really want to love this place. I had one great experience with Dusty, and unfortunately he is out of town. Outside their door is a sign that says "walk in's welcome". I went in yesterday and felt anything but. There was one person in the chair getting his hair cut. The owner was just hanging out. I asked for a hair cut. She went to her ipad to check the schedule - I guess. Just then another person walked in and asked for a hair cut. He and I were standing there while the owner kept looking at her ipad. She then asked me if I could come back in about 30 minutes. I was totally confused and asked if she had something scheduled. She didn't answer and I walked out.....for good. My guess is that she was going to help the second person who walked in first. Not sure why, but I was clearly not a "welcome walk in". My husband had a similar experience there and has now found another home hair cut option in the neighborhood. The whole experience felt awkward and very unwelcoming. Who needs that...... read more

I am a middle aged woman and not fussy about my hair, which doesn't mean that I don't want it to look good. I just don't want to spend a lot of time dealing with it. My hair is wavy/curly with lots of gray. I received a partial foil and a trim which gave my hair shine and bounce. Shelly instinctively knows what I want and what will work. She cuts my son's and daughter's hair as well and they have always been happy both during and after the cut. Shelly is engaging and she and Jen have great rapport. Saw this new place and was intrigued. So I swing in on a lark, around 530 on a Friday. Very bad customer service in here. Three employees, all chatting among themselves, with one customer standing with his credit card apparently waiting to pay. No cuts happening, three barber chairs open. I am ignored for about two minutes. I'm literally left standing there while the employees chat. No greeting or instruction of any kind. So I then offer up "how much for a cut?" The apparent employee in charge announces "30 bucks." She has had her face in her phone the whole time I've been there, and it remains In her phone when she makes this pronouncement. I continue to stand, and wait. The employees chat. One if them starts sweeping around my feet, forcing me to move. I am offered no greeting, not am I invited to sit in any of the three empty barber chairs. The employees chat further. After another couple of minutes of being ignored, the lead employee tells me "you can hang your coat over there." She shrugs in the direction of the corner, and the whole time her face remains buried in her phone. I hang my coat. Still I wait. The employees chat. Then, without taking her face out of her phone, the head emoyee sort of barks at me "first name?" I answer. She does data entry into her phone. She barks "last name?," as she stands poised to again enter my name into her phone. This employee has still not taken her eyes out of her phone. Not once. I realize she is entering my name into her phone. It feels intrusive and like an interrogation. This was her first real acknowledgment of my presence. I ask "do you really need my name?" This induces the employee, for the first time, to offer eye contact. "This is how we start all our haircuts!" I ponder this for a moment, and decide to leave. "You guys were pretty slow on the uptake anyway." As I walk out, the sweeper reiterates "this is how we do all our haircuts". Or something like that. I'm sure it was the end of a long day. But this was very, very bad customer service. That sort of annoying disinterest you get at places where they fundamentally don't give a care about your business. The lead employee having her face buried in her phone for at least five minutes while ignoring me was something I've never experienced before. It was juvenile and unprofessional. First time I walked out if a barber shop. But service should be better, especially if they are gonna charge 30 dollars for a barber cut. Avoid. read more

I received the worst color and cut here. I asked for a darker blond than the platinum I had. I ended up with caramel brown (not the color the stylist had showed me in the picture). The cut was choppy and bangs were so short I was embarrassed. I left the salon feeling and looking like a clown. read more
