Good points: the place is well situated, convenient for bus and train stations - and the free Metroshuttle bus passes along St Petersgate - nice decor, comfortable to sit in (unlike most of the tap houses in the area), reasonable enough prices (but see later). the porter I had was one of the best of its type with a nice smooth finish.
Bad points: you really need to be an IPA nerd to get the most out of the menu - at least at the time I was there. The special offer of £3 a pint on cask ales on Tuesdays isn't that much of a saving (around 50p), and with a Wetherspoons just a few doors away I think it's worth the risk of being more generous - £2.50 say. Disappointingly, the member of staff I dealt with was unable to answer a couple of pretty straightforward questions about the ales on offer. Since many of them are unfamiliar in this neck of the woods, it'd be helpful to know something useful about them beyond what's on the blackboard - distinct flavours, rough or smooth and suchlike. It might also be worth remembering that today's first-time visitor could be next week's regular if they think the service is friendly and welcoming. read more
