Many of the seats are the same old church pews (with a small amount of added cushion). The leg room is very poor, and makes a 2-3 hour performance awkward to watch. The 'cafe' which is located on the 1st floor is very pleasant, with quick and friendly service. The food is good for the price, although the drinks are very expensive for the location/audience. We are truly spoilt with arts venues in Birmingham. From the big touring shows at The Hippodrome to the fantastic gems at places like The Crescent and The Blue Orange Theatre, there is something going on every single week in the City. The REP is a truly fantastic theatre. I have seen a plethora of pieces here (most notably "The Northern Lights") and they have all been memorable. The theatre itself has even had a facelift with the construction of the Library, giving you even more of a reason to visit. As well as one-off plays, the REP hosts several events as part of Birmingham's cultural festivals. Keep an eye out on their website for more details of special events which go on throughout the year. In terms of the actual performance space, I have never had a bad view (even when buying the cheap seats) here. The ticketing has always been straight forward and problem free and it's easy to find out what's scheduled via their print materials and their site. The seating is comfortable and the theatre is accessible for those with mobility issues. As you would expect, drinks are expensive. It wouldn't be a trip to the theatre if you didn't have a good gasp at the price of two drinks, but saying that it's still cheaper than many of the other big theatre spaces I've been to around the UK. I have reviewed the Brasserie before for afternoon tea (http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/searcys-birmingham?osq=REP+Brasserie), but you can also grab pre-theatre menus here (which would work out a little cheaper than the regular menu). We get…read morethere once or twice a year and the productions we've seen have always been enjoyable, some of them have been outstanding. As a review about the venue I can honestly say that the Rep has got better and better over time. Tonight I was in the House for 'The Exorcist', comfortable seating and wonderful production on the stage. Last year we were in the studio for 'Beryl', one of the best plays I have seen. Again great production values and a very comfortable experience for the audience. The Marmalade bar offers great cocktails, you can dine here too. Centenary Square is a big part of the cultural quarter of Birmingham with Symphony Hall, The Rep and Library of Birmingham all lined up like ducks in a row. Whilst the Rep seems to have been here forever, it feels brand new on the inside. There's a wonderful ambience around here, it's part of the Birmingham buzz. The real challenge of living in Birmingham, is that there is so much going on and only so much time. Then again, time spent at the Rep is happy time.

Opening night of "Measure for Measure" was ultimately a success. Warning, they have chosen to…read morealienate more than half of Americans with their opening video montage and insinuations. I almost walked out before the play started. However, I wanted to give the actors a chance to overcome the distasteful display of hate and assumptions. When they have Prince Andrew and Mendelson to target, they target the President of the United States. Not every play goer is hateful and against Our President. That said, there are the typical opening night issues. Long pauses that indicated lines were forgotten or missed. The sound was also a bit off. About who showed anger or severe emotional pain by screaming, were hard to understand and sounds muffled and lost. Either the actors were not annunciating or the sound was too high on they're mics. There seemed to be a few missed cues, as well. So if that said, this okay was fantastic and the kinks will be worked out in time. I wasn't sure about the minimalistic staging and lack of scenery, but I couldn't have been more impressed with the way the actors worked the bare stage making my imagination take over and seeing an entirely different experience in my mind. The acting was superb! Luccio came in a little rough, but he really stole the show by the end of the post. Well done! I would recommend the theater, as it is a bucket list for many thespians and okay goers! What an incredible production. Unfortunately, I allowed the RSC website to pick my seats. I ended up in a straight high back chair where my legs dangled and I couldn't see the entire state and videos in the background. It probably helped me be distracted by the disrespect they were insinuating. I would never buy tickets with these seats again. Almost intolerable, so the acting and entire production overshadowed what I didn't care for. Next time, if I'm lucky enough to be back in Stratford Upon Avon, I would return. Tolerance and giving things a chance worked out for me. I also live Shakespeare and am a thespian at heart.

It…read morehad it's grand opening on June 24th 1911 and amazingly still provides lots of small productions and regular entertainment today! The theatre seats around 500 and has a wide range of productions, from 'Big band' nights to christmas pantomimes. It also stages regular entertainment from the New Mills Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society. The community have all worked together to keep this local theatre alive,the theatre also provides great opportunities and activities for children of the new mills and district community.

There are no limits to what can happen here; it's a theatre, an art gallery, an exhibition hall, a comedy venue, a music venue, a cinema, a function room...the list goes on. Everything about it is so beautifully versatile, you can go to any one of the above events there and think that is the venue's sole purpose. I've been to see some fantastic original exhibitions there, I've been in tears from laughing at the comedy nights and I've taken my younger sister there for some of the great child-friendly events they regularly hold. If you're unsure, head down to their next open day when they have taster sessions of everything for free! Also check out the programme of events on their website, I bet you'll see something you like because they really do cater for everyone!

The Waterside Arts Centre was completed as part of the redevelopment of the Trafford Council…read moreOffices which resulted in some shiny new offices, a new bar beneath them, and the Waterside Arts Centre. The Waterside really amounts to a number of galleres and exhibition spaces, and the Robert Bolt theatre within it all, which is a reasonably intimate (i.e. small!) performance venue that I've been lucky enough to visit for a number of different performances. There is a full programme of events on here and in any one month there will be a variety of music concerts (ranging from small and relatively unknown folk acts, current chart stalwarts, ageing rockers, local classical musical ensembles and anything (and everything) inbetween. There's also a regular comedy night styled along the lines of 'Whose line is it anyway?', and regular theatre productions including an annual pantomime. I've been fortunate enough to see a few acts there in recent times including Hayseed Dixie (true Hillbilly Rock) and Glenn Tillbrook (guitar-god and songwriter extraordinaire of Squeeze fame), two gigs that saw the Robert Bolt theatre in both standing, and fully seated configurations (it is usually set up for one or the other!)... Both times, the size of venue allowed me to feel really connected to the performer in a true 'I could see into the whites of their eyes' kind of sense. In both instances, this certainly added to the quality of the experience! Drinks for gigs are usually provided via a 'bottle and can' bar, which can make for a slightly pricy night, but then, you're not going there to drink! The gallery spaces are spread around the building and seem to cater for most tastes, and provide opportunities for local artists alongside those who are better known. All in all, the Waterside is a great little venue and a top addition to a town that was in sore need of a place like this. Bravo!

What a beautiful venue!…read more I went to see John Cooper Clarke perform, I left with a big smile on my face. Not just from the performance, but from the venue as well. Has a bar area, where drinks can also be pre-ordered for the interval, it is clean and warming, and the theatre itself is a gem. I did find the seats a little small, the larger bodied person may struggle, not sure if they have provisions. Ample free car parking outside too.
