What an awesome example of a pub!
In these days when theme bars and gastro pubs are taking over our leisure experiences, it is great to see a traditional old country boozer thriving in a place most people have never heard of.
Situated in Monknash, as tiny village between Llantwit Major and Bridgend, the Plough and Harrow is not easy to find at first.
But, once you step into the pub, you realise it is worth seeking out.
Set in two rooms of similar size, the Plough and Harrow boasts a traditional coal fire in each room, which really make the atmosphere something special.
You take a bit of a gamble heading deep into the vale for this one though as they don't take bookings but if you catch it right, it can offer a great experience for families, couples or smaller groups.
My girlfriend and I went for Sunday lunch at about 2pm and were lucky enough to get a seat straight away, which half an hour earlier probably would have been a struggle.
But once in, we were served with drinks immediately and ordered the food at the bar.
Our delicious lamb dinners were served promptly by the friendly staff, who offered a range of condiments.
The lamb itself was tender and melted in the mouth while the roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings were both light and crispy.
Extra veg is served separately and is cooked to perfection.
For beer and cider buffs, there is plenty of traditional stuff on offer from a range of lesser known brewers.
A night sat by the fire sampling them could be great fun as the frosty winter nights draw in.
Then come summer, an afternoon in the ample beer garden is a must. read more
