Needed a spot close to the highway for a bite to eat. Chose The Plough Inn randomly, and we're glad we did! Charming Irish pub with quite a delectable menu! We were greeted instantly and seated. This is the the first one star review I am giving to anywhere since joining Yelp and I do no do this lightly but I feel very strongly about how we were treated here that I don't believe that I have a choice, I would actually have given zero stars if I could!! We arrived for a pre-booked table and were left standing for a good 5+ minutes with staff whooshing past us but nobody taking us under their notice or asking us for any details....eventually got to our table which was at the end of the restaurant, the table was nice and we were asked for our drinks orders. After 10 minutes the waitress returned and took our food order, she started with me and I gave her my starter order and she moved on to the rest of the party but took their starter and main orders, she was about to leave when I asked if I could give her my main meal order and she said she thought I was having the starter as my main!? Anyway after being corrected she went away with all orders and all seemed well at this point. It wasn't long before our starters arrived which were lovely, I had the seafood three ways which was nice. Not long after our plates were collected and we waited for our mains, which came quite quickly-seemed like service was back on track! We all got the burgers, I had the tropical burger and fries which was huge and tasty. The plates were collected shortly after and at this point I went to the loo, I came back and had missed the offer of a dessert, I didn't want anything more so this was fine. We had however decided we would sit on and get a few more drinks so when we eventually got the attention of a staff member we asked for the cocktail menu, this took nearly 15 minutes to be brought to us which we thought was excessive-but little did we know how bad it was to get! We sat for another 40 minutes with no staff coming near us, we could see them serving other tables and as we had asked for the cocktail menu I think it should have been obvious we wanted to order a cocktail!?? Well eventually one of the staff came to clear another table and we got his attention and asked if he had forgotten about us (this was Ben, the same staff member who brought us the cocktail menu some 40 minutes previously) at this point he proceeded to say that we had been rude all night and that the issue with the dessert was a problem (another of my party had simply asked if there was a certain dessert on the menu as she was full and only her favourite dessert would tempt her to have something and when the waitress said it wasn't available she said she wouldn't bother), Ben then said we needed to show the staff some respect and also that we should have just shouted if we wanted a drink!!? I couldn't believe it....I have literally never been spoken to in this way by a staff member in a restaurant in all my life-he then looked very smug and told us to order a drink-obviously we weren't going to spend any more money so told him to be on his way and that we wanted to speak to the manager. The manager came over a few minutes later and apologised profusely and said the staff member would be spoken to as that is not how she would expect anyone to speak to a customer even if they had of been rude (which we were not), however she offered nothing by way of apology or as a goodwill gesture, which I think is the least she could have done considering the behaviour of her staff! It was quite clear that we had been ignored since the 'dessert' incident and the staff had deliberately decided to stay away from our table and so made it very obvious to other customers that there was an issue, it was extremely embarrassing and totally unprofessional. I will never set foot in this restaurant again and I would recommend others to seriously think twice also! As an elite yelper I take all reviews seriously and I do feel bad for having to be so harsh here but although the food was nice there is no excusing being treated in this way by the staff-we were out having a meal and wanted to have a good time, this was such a disappointment and completely ruined the night. read more

This was a great bistro and pub for dinner! Hillsborough was a beautiful place see walking around to dinner. The dinner itself was delicious. I had the roasted pigeon special and my friend had the NY Burger and neither of us left food on our plates! The Plough has recently undergone a refurbishment in the Bistro, which looks absolutely fab, without taking away from the charm of the building, which comprises a bar and restaurant. The restaurant is renowned and as mentioned, can be found in all good Northern Irish good food guides, and it's there for a reason. The menu pushes the boundaries, there is nothing boring or predictable here, so if you enjoy eating out, and want to try something new, then the Plough is the place for you! They even do a new take on burgers, such as my favourite, with Chilli Jam. I took a punt on ordering it and was glad I did, it was out of this world! Another point worth a mention - I am not a Guinness fan, but I tried some in the Plough and can confirm that they have the best black stuff outside of Dublin that I have ever tasted! read more

We decided to have dinner here with the recommendations of our B&B. Great ambience and delicious food. The staff were friendly and were on top of our table. I just wish they would smile more. After dinner, we went downstairs to their pub. The bartender was SUPER friendly and helpful. Because I can't drink alcohol he offered me tea, so I accepted. He went upstairs to get the tea and the chamomile tea I wanted. I felt terrible - I didn't know it would be that much work for him! We got to chat with some locals and they all were very friendly. At the end, the bartender contacted a taxi for us for a ride back to our B&B and was on top of it. If we lived in this town - this would be our go-to place. read more

You will find this place mentioned in most of the good food guides for Northern Ireland. The owners of this place also run The Pheasant Pub in Annahilt, and both are renknowned for their excellent food, wonderful service and fantastic reputations. The downstairs bar has a very traditional country-pub style feel, while the restaurant upstairs is very modern and stylish in design, but it marries together very well and is done very sympathetically. The Plough restaurant's menu is just gorgeous, every dish sounds mouthwatering and it's hard to choose. One of our group had the Roast Suckling Pig - sounds a bit medieval but it was presented very stylishly and tasted absolutely lovely. I had the duck with oriental noodles and I wanted more when I was finished, it was so tasty. They have excellent service also, very attentive. read more

I have visited The Plough a few times in the bar and the Bistro and i have always enjoyed the food. There is a good choice of traditional pub grub and they have promotions for curry nights and gormet burger club etc. I had a leg of lamb one Sunday and it was delicious. Nice atmosphere and decor. Service can be a bit slow at times, however i think this is due to it being quite busy. read more

I had heard so many good things about The Plough that I thought that we had to give it a try at long last. My wife and I had dinner in The Bistro part of the establishment on a Bank Holiday. I specify this because they seemed to only offer us a shorter menu on a print out specifically for that Bank Holiday. We had checked the website for menus before booking and we were excited by the lunch menu which was the only menu on there - it was both extensive and with some interesting dishes which neither of us had tried before including a number of game and a variety of seafood dishes. Not so on the menu we were given on arrival. The menu was lacking in variety and imagination. I started with a goat's cheese salad which was tasty enough but didn't wow me. It was accompanied by a nice fig and ginger relish and the salad had a delicious dressing. There were a lot of different flavours but I'm not sure that all the flavours worked together as well as they should have. I had the "suckling hog medallions" for my main. I was excepting thick, juicy cuts of pork but what I got was thin, dry pieces which looked like they had come like that from a packet and fried for convenience. They were served on a bed of creamy mashed potato with bacon and cabbage. It tasted fine but again, I was far from inspired. There was pineapple and tomato in there too and all the flavours together just didn't work for me. My wife had duck spring rolls to start which were fine followed by the fillet steak which unfortunately wasn't cooked as requested and so had lost a lot of the taste and tenderness. It was clear that a lot of thought was put into the presentation of the dishes and if food was something just to be looked at, I'd give it top marks but taste is more important for me and it did fall short of what I expected. I admit that due to the hype, perhaps I'm being more critical than normal but it just didn't come close to anything I'd heard or read about this place. I also wouldn't consider it value for money - a 2 course meal for 2 came to £56 without drinks. The atmosphere was a bit stuffy - there was us and just a few other couples all seated in close proximity. The ambient music was too low and so there was almost complete silence as couples were seated too close together to have private conversation. The decor was modern and fresh and the seating was comfortable although the tables were close together without any feeling of privacy which I personally don't like. The staff were perfectly friendly and helpful and didn't rush us at all. It just didn't live up to expectations. Disappointed. I will try it again when hopefully they'll offer the wider and more interesting menu. read more

This pub/restaurant is located in the quaint little town of Hillsborough. Decided to stop on the way through the town after not being able to decide where we would eat. We got a little confused as to where the actual restaurant was as there were two places you could access via the car parking facilities. We had not booked a table but we were able to get seated as soon as possible by some well mannered and well presented staff. We were impressed with decor and the smart interior that this restaurant boasts. It possessed a beautiful range of paintings as well as well coordinated and stylish soft furnishings. However, this is where any commendations stop. All in all the food was not a pleasant experience. I ordered squid to start and was not pleased with the texture and lack of taste when it arrived. As a main course I ordered supreme of chicken with tomato mash. Not very tasty at all. I did not believe that the portion sizes were adequate either in relation to the price.
