Back in 2016, when Mattia College of Miami closed its doors to the school unexpectedly, it caused many of its students to be left without any information about nursing studies or where to go thereafter. After doing research on schools in the area, I went to the Universal Career School looking for a way to continue and finish my nursing program. The Universal Career School opened the door for me and many of my clasmates. We were able to obtain the correct information and were given the best communication from the administration staff. The faculty did a great job by preparing us well for the classes and they provided excellent support. I graduated last year and I have shared my archives with my classmates, instructors, and the administrators. I also participated in the first graduating ceremony with my RN license already in my hands. I was able to pass the NCLEX on my first try as the Universal Career School had prepared me well. Today I am working as RN in a large hospital system. I am forever greatful to the Universal Career School for all the help they provided me towards my end goal of having a career in Nursing.

My experience with this school has been extremely stressful and disappointing. I am writing this…read morereview because I wish I had known these things before enrolling. During the admission process, the school is very nice and makes everything sound good and easy. But after you enroll, my experience has been very different. There are so many changes to schedules, testing, wording, and requirements, sometimes with very little notice. This school is NOT fully remote. Every semester you have to travel to Florida to take your final exams in person. For students who live out of state, this can be extremely stressful. At other schools, when finals are coming, you can stay home, focus on studying, and prepare for your exams. Here, you are dealing with clinicals, traveling away from home, and studying for finals at the same time. The last-minute changes are another major problem for me. Students have jobs, families, and other responsibilities. We cannot always change our plans at the last minute because the school changes a testing date or schedule. It feels like the school makes changes based on what works for them without considering how those changes affect students. Another issue is the way things are worded or renamed. Requirements can be called different things over time, which makes it confusing for students to understand what is actually required. For example, what was referred to as an exit exam is now called an Academic Quiz. Students should make sure they understand exactly what these requirements mean and what is required for graduation. The financial process is also something students should be very careful about. In my experience, I was not clearly told that there was an option to pay tuition out of pocket. Instead, the school proceeded with loan paperwork and asked students to sign it. Some students may be able to pay for school themselves and may not want to take out a loan. I believe students should be clearly informed about their payment options before any loan paperwork is completed or signed. Please read every financial document carefully before signing anything. Make sure you understand whether you are agreeing to a student loan and how much you will be responsible for paying back. Honestly, at times this program has felt more like a punishment than a nursing program. The combination of traveling to Florida, clinicals, in-person finals, last-minute changes, testing, and stress can be overwhelming. It can also feel very difficult to change your situation once you are already enrolled and have invested your time and money. I also feel that the school is more focused on making money than supporting students. That is my personal experience, and I think future students should know what they may be getting into before making a commitment. If you are from California, make sure you independently check the California Board of Registered Nursing requirements before enrolling in an out-of-state program. Do not assume that everything will meet California requirements just because the school accepts students from California. My advice is to think very carefully before enrolling. Do your own research, ask many questions, and get important information in writing. Do not rely only on what you are told during the admission process. For me, this experience has been extremely stressful, and I would not recommend this school based on my experience.

I went to the miami campus in1997-1998 for the Phlebotomist Technician, and there program is better…read morethen some of these phlebotomy program that are out here now and I am still in the field after 20 years, the way I see some of the phlebotomist they turn out now is ashame none of them know how to stick at all they bruise patients so bad, they do not teach the phlebotomist here how to stick kids or obtain blood from babies for pku's or micro's, it takes at least one year to master the skill to draw blood, this is not an over nite thing it's a skill and it takes at least your first year to master that skill, I know because I been there and done that.

Like a lot of people, I was unemployed during the Great Recession. I received some correspondence that to continue getting benefits I had to enroll in a school. Based on recommendations from friends in the industry, I had another school in mind and I mentioned such to my unemployment coordinator. They seemed to drag their feet on my choice, instead leaning and emphasizing on New Horizons. So I went, sat through their sales presentation and started.. Their concept is "Mentored Learning" - a fancy way to say "Self Study". I was given a book (very plain and lacking in examples), headphones and sat in a room where the person sitting next to me was taking a completely different course. Trying to get assistance from said "mentor" was an excercise in pulling teeth. I started working again about a month after starting said "classes" and got my first certification mostly through studying from home with the book I bought at Borders. While I'm able to do the classes online from home because of work, I still have to attend in person do the practice tests. I am still going through the program to finish the certifications, and was told by the person who signed me up to "just memorize the practice exams and that way pass the test". Even though I'm employed, I have to finish the program. Oh, and again I had to buy my own books to have some hope of passing the test. I have gone through three different student services / admissions directors while taking the program in a timespan of a year. The guy who signed me up - an "Account Executive" when I started is currently the lead. The "classroom" is a freezer where you can even hear the very loud conversations in the student lounge. The promised actual practice session where you actually get to put together a computer or do system work - well I've only had two, making the drive out here not worth it. Since it shares floor space with another "technical school", the bathroom is a LONG walk away. Oh, and their website is a dot com, not a dot edu (as most schools). I at least learned that :) This is one place I certainly would not recommend!

They provide you with videos and books and tell you good luck. The mentors at New Horizons are just guys who got certified and help you out if you have questions. This place is a rip off! You'll get certified and walk away not knowing hardly anything. No hands-on at all! I would not recommend New Horizons to anyone! Even the job placement at the Miami location is a joke! The girl that works there that places you with jobs rarely placed anyone! If you're thinking about going to this school think twice!
