Quite a fair garden space also! This pub has rapidly become one of the essential ale houses of Leicester. I fully expected to be staying a while, confirmed once I saw 3 beers on I'd not had before. Whipples Gold, Belvoir Dark Horse mild and something I mysteriously noted down as 'Sedge of Betterns' which appears not to exist! One cool initiative is that if you finish the barrel then your next beer is on the house. Make you feel better about getting that last poorer quality pint. Chatting with the bartender led to the first time in my life that someone pointed out I was old enough to be their father!

You approach over a lovely little bridge, which spans one of the areas many canal arteries. The canal runs alongside the pub, and is dotted with beautiful barges and venerable vessels. Clearly then, the pub caters for boating folk, however there's plenty here for us land lubbers to enjoy too. In fact, although the pub lies next to the canal, its elevated position means the garden doesn't benefit as much from the location as other pubs in the surrounding areas. We just popped in for a cheap and cheerful pint of lager, and the pub and the friendly staff, dutifully obliged. But, don't get the wrong impression of this place. This pub does traditional new England just as well as it does traditional olde England. Instead of pies, scratchings and pickled eggs, this boozer provides bhajees, balties and samosas. Yes, the Bulls Head does a range of authentic Indian cuisine to go with its authentic range of English ales. Curry and a pint - it's the norn!

The place is small but charming, characterful, and comfortable. Service is good and friendly. I've had several of their beers, overall excellent and ranging from good to outstanding. Their Burton Porter is extremely characterful, balanced, with lots of complexity and depth, simply one of the best plain porters I have ever had. Their Hearty Ale, a slightly stronger pale ale is also complex and full of character, and balanced. Stairway to Heaven, an IPA, is good but I felt a bit lacking in balance. Others, like their Bramble Stout and Empire India Pale Ale are also characterful and interesting, the latter probably the best effort at actually recreating what a true IPA of the past would have been like - high in alcohol and hops, with strong hop character, but also a strong, slightly rustic yeastiness and hints of vinegary sourness. I highly recommend this place for anyone in town looking for a good beer and especially for any beer lover, who should made a stop in Burton if in the Midlands.
