I don't think they're doing their $5 grand opening special anymore. Called in our order specifically for the grand opening special and we were charged $7/per order (2 pupusas and soda). Happy to support a small biz, just wish we knew up front. I'm impressed that these could come in mini and bigger sizes. One of mine was small, so they gave me an extra mini. I usually like the chicharron, but got the cheese and pork separately. I definitely prefer the cheese one. This spot is in the back of Planet Fitness. And, despite what it looks like through reviews, they do allow in-person pickup. Ring the bell when you arrive. They're also super responsive on Yelp.

An independent little spot with great prices and the food is so damn good. I've always supported smaller menus since you get better flavor and appeal and they do it right, I also met the owner who was a joy to talk to and told me all about the spot and his future plans for it while I waited. Without a doubt would recommend time and time again!

Quesabirria pupusas with vegetables and consume

My mom and I tried this pupusa place for the first time and it was sooo worth it. The best pupusas we've ever had and we tried their quesabirria pupusas and they were so amazing and worth the price! They come with vegetables and consume already but we didn't kno that and ordered it on the side, and the owner was kind enough to refund the money and give us an extra pupusa as it was our first visit :D will definitely be coming back with such amazing customer service and delicious food. Thank you so much again!!

Now, I don't claim to be a pupusa snob. I don't carry around a clipboard, wear a "Certified Pupusa…read moreInspector" badge, or judge masa thickness with a digital caliper. But I do know a really good pupusa when one lands on my plate. And the ones at El Santaneco in South San Francisco? Let's just say they made me wonder where this place had been hiding all these years. Like many neighborhood gems, El Santaneco doesn't scream for attention. Instead, it quietly lets the food do all the talking. That's usually the first sign you've stumbled onto something special. The second sign? Watching a steady stream of locals walk in, greet the staff by name, and order without even looking at the menu. Regulars are the best Yelp review money can't buy. I ordered the Chicharrón and Chicken Pupusas and together they were more than enough to satisfy a very ambitious appetite. Each one arrived piping hot with beautifully crisp edges and a soft, cheesy center that made every bite worth the inevitable burned fingertips. On the side came a generous helping of creamy refried beans and enough fresh, tangy curtido to make me question why every restaurant doesn't serve vegetables this way. The cool crunch paired perfectly with the rich, savory pupusas, creating the kind of balance that keeps you reaching for "just one more bite" until...oops...they're gone. This isn't flashy dining. There aren't neon signs telling you your food is "artisanal," and nobody's serving pupusas on reclaimed barn wood. Just honest, delicious Salvadoran comfort food made by people who clearly know what they're doing. As I was leaving, I caught myself scanning the menu one more time, mentally planning my return visit before I had even backed out of the parking space. That's always a good sign. **Overall: 4 stars.** Great food, generous portions, welcoming service, and the kind of neighborhood loyalty that has to be earned one delicious pupusa at a time. El Santaneco is proof that some of the Bay Area's best meals aren't found in trendy neighborhoods--they're quietly waiting for you just around the corner. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a date with the rest of the menu. Come hungry and Go Big!!!

Then came the pupusa. This was okay. I ordered the revuelta ( oro & cheese) but it appeared it did not have any cheese. I have been here many times before, and the pupusas have been cheesy, so not sure what happened yesterday. I hope the next time I go, it is more cheesy.

I'd give them about a 3.5 out of 5. On a good day, they come out with that perfect golden-brown finish. On a bad day, they look and taste undercooked to the point where I've had to throw them back on the stove at home just to make them edible. The ambiance doesn't do much to help. It's your typical Mission-style Latin restaurant, kind of sticky and worn-in, but in a way where you can't quite tell if it's part of the aesthetic or just a lack of upkeep. Now, let's get into why this leans closer to a one-star experience. The staff consistently come off like they'd rather be anywhere else. They don't smile and often come across as rude. Timing is basically a suggestion here. If you place a takeout order, plan well ahead, at least 45 to 60 minutes before pickup. Every single time I've called, I've been told 25 to 30 minutes, only to arrive and wait another 15 to 20 minutes. Without fail. And in a neighborhood where parking is already a headache, with limited meters and tight timing, you'll feel that delay. Your patience will absolutely be tested. Don't say I didn't warn you. Update: Today's order included a hit inside the cheese mixture of the Pupusas. Disgusting.
