However, you can't complain too much when it's free. The current facility offers a couple of floors with small but interesting galleries. Some of the exhibitions are in collaboration with VMFA in Richmond. The collections I saw offered a mix of folksy history and contemporary perspectives. There is also a nice view of the valley as this building is on a hill. I received a rather disinterested welcome, and the collections weren't substantial enough to spend even an hour in total for me. I wouldn't come any great distance to see the place, but it seemed to offer some nice educational opportunities for the community and perhaps if renovated and expanded it will become more of a destination for non-locals. I would certainly be happy to see that happen.

The volunteer at the desk, a former psychiatric nurse, and I bonded over a shared history of Pittsburgh and nursing. All of the four exhibits, three temporary and one permanent, were interesting. I especially enjoyed the Quilt National '19 exhibit. I congratulate each of the quilters on bringing a fresh and novel approach to an old art form.

This is the centerpiece of Saltville. This unoriginally named town holds more intrigue than you…read morewould probably think. The salt is a product of some unusual geologic conditions that lead animal bones to be well preserved, making this a top site for archaeology. In addition, the salt was also of enormous economic value and was a military asset during the Civil War, making this the site of a significant set of armed conflict. Some other environmental and cultural history pops up as well. The museum has several well-produced and substantial documentaries showing in a tiny theater. The two rooms of exhibits take up more time than you'd think, and I was probably there for an hour and a half or so. The $5 admission is worth it, easily. The town continues to have some unusually salty ponds that you can walk around on some paved trails, as well as some historic markers and a recreated set of salt mining equipment on the edge of town. All of these features and more can be viewed and contextualized on the museum's topographic map/diaorama. It's not a metropolis, but it is an interesting place.

This is the second oldest building in Oak Hill. Built in…read more1903, the same year that Oak Hill became incorporated. This facility was purchased by The Friends of the Lewis House in 2000 and has been beautifully preserved and maintained in that fashion. It is home to a Hank Williams museum, a 1903 Parlor, many antique pieces and a very large area that is rented out for parties and other functions with very reasonable rental fees. A beautiful setting for all functions. There is a 3 bed room garage apartment that will be available for rental after improvements are completed.

The complex hosts performances including a local orchestra which I've seen on visits to the southern part of the state . My understanding is there is also movie nights during the summer and other music venues . The Lewis House is now a museum , notable for housing the car Hank Williams died in . He was driving through Oak Hill and died suddenly in front of the Lewis House . There is always a musical tribute at the Amphitheater each summer . The amphitheater itself is an open bandshell with a stage and enough seating area to accommodate a few hundred . Doesn't sound like a lot of seating but it's quite a small town . Most of the events are free to the public . As a side note , the New River Gorge is nearby . People come from all over the world to do the rapids on the New River which flows through the gorge . It's called the Grand Canyon of the East for good reason . Also near Lewis House is Fayetteville West Virginia , a vibrant small town with an arts and food scene .

There's a 15 minute video in a super comfortable theater that gives you the background of the museum. There was a gentleman that works there that was chatting before the film and he was a wealth of knowledge. There's a great store with some treasures and a special exhibit area. The North House Museum is one of those small, out of the way sites that are worth exploring…read more Operated as part of the Greenbrier Historical Society, it contains many examples of early Virginia furnishings. Yes, you read that right my friends. Don't forget, West Virginia was a part of Virginia until 1863. The North House has six rooms open to the public. My husband Rick and I took the free (although a donation is suggested) guided tour. Being a history teacher, Rick liked the Civil War Room the best. I preferred the Doris Caldwell room. Caldwell was a diorama artist whose pieces were very intricately detailed. Come check this place out if you're on a WV vacation.

I got to explore the space for a bit before they closed for the day. I was impressed with the children's area, which is fun and has quite a few things for kids to play with. Other than the children's area, everything else is mostly look-but-don't-touch. Art, historical objects and documents, maps, books, furniture and a few cozy places to sit are the rest of the cultural center. This is a nice place to stop into when you're in Blacksburg if you want to know more about the history of the city, but it's also a quick visit.

When I visited, a weekend Street market was going on outside. It is a splendid looking structure outside and in, and had a variety of exhibitions on the history and natural environment of the area as well as some art on display. There was a gift shopped themed toward local history. One can also sit on the covered porch outside. Bathrooms and water fountains were available on the second floor, and it was a hot day.

There's a Jeep in the lobby, and exhibits around the hall upstairs, plus a memorial room across the hall with memorials for each war the area's residents have fought and died in. The museum itself is full of artifacts donated by local veterans and their families. Very interesting items, nicely displayed. It is small, but you could easily spend an hour perusing all the displays. Well worth a visit if you live anywhere nearby, or are going down nearby I-77 and have any interest in history. I believe it is open weekday afternoons, closed during the winter months (but the janitor graciously let me in once I explained my interest.)

We pass it every other year on our Ohio/Pennsylvania vacations, and we always joke about visiting. This year we decided to give it go. We were pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed Wolf Creek. The staff is super friendly and our tour guide was exceptionally educated on the site, and you could easily tell that she enjoyed her job. This is a fun and relatively inexpensive way to spend 2 to 3 hours and learn fascinating Native American history
